Getting started ...

I am one of life's great procrastinators and today I have to undertake a major clean. I have been up for nearly 45 minutes, but so far only put a load of washing on and here I am adding another layer of avoidance. Oh, I will get there eventually, but 7:30, 8:00, 9:00? Your guess is as good as mine! grin

I will probably look out some buzzy music, put on my oldest, most comfy pair of leggings and work on convincing myself that it is good exercise! Alternatively, I could pop out to the shops for a while - we have run out of chocolate biscuits!! blush

Do you have to give yourself that little kick to face the dross, or would it bother you more if it wasn't done? My problem is I have a 3-day window for a day's work so I can see things sliding smile.

I could easily gave posted that imperfect. As you can see, I'm still on gn and I have loads to do! blush

I don't bother much with cleaning, but the job I struggle with is cutting the grass. It takes me several days to get around to it.

Imperfect27 Tue 01-Aug-17 07:48:34

Well, I have stirred my stumps - publicly outing and shaming myself really does seem to be the way forward grin! I am dressed after a fashion - hoping the postie doesn't come today and find me in my embarrassingly holey 'work clothes' AND I have Mr Muscled the oven(other cleaners are available) ... and sent my daughter a picture of me with the box / waering the dreaded blue gloves and a 'Save meeeeee!!'message. Hopefully she will interrupt me soon grin grin grin.

Auntieflo Tue 01-Aug-17 08:02:23

Kittylester, I know you're not on the gin, but when folk put 'gn' that's how I read it. You can see there's no hope for me smile. I'm still in bed drinking my first cup of tea, but I do have a pile of ironing waiting downstairs, and a carrot cake to make, and some volunteering this afternoon.....

NanKate Tue 01-Aug-17 08:28:05

I have a DH who doesn't have an idle bone in his body. I am the complete opposite. Well I have to balance the relationship out. hmm

Imperfect27 Tue 01-Aug-17 08:31:40

NanKate LOL!

Two lots of washing done ...
Oven 'muscled' ...
Still hoping my daughter will interrupt me (she messaged last night to say could we have a catch up today?)
It helps if I stand the cleaning materials in full view ... a bit ... grin

I work best to deadlines so find I am setting them for myself now. I will do x,y,z this morning then I can catch up with Outlander on TV this afternoon. Sad or what smile

Look what I found (Twitter is my chief procrastinator aid) - and I can use it on this thread!

Have saved the image for future use! grin

Kateykrunch Tue 01-Aug-17 09:03:35

Wow!, I'm impressed that you are up and dressed and cleaning! I'm up, on the settee, dressing tea and still in my pj's.

Imperfect27 Tue 01-Aug-17 09:07:43

Oh Katey it's all or nothing with me ...all the biscuits gone and nothing substantially clean yet! grin

I do make lists of urgent jobs to do, I work hard at it all day, but when I sit down to cross off jobs at the end of the day, nothing I did is actually on the list! Next day I usually give up and go shopping. (Too tired to do any more chores, but not to tired to shop hmm.)

edsnana Tue 01-Aug-17 10:39:40

My to do list sometimes motivates me, but then I find myself adding things I've already done just so I can cross something off!

goldengirl Tue 01-Aug-17 10:42:20

Why do you have to do a major clean Imperfect27? The sky won't fall down if you don't - at least that's what I've discovered and it was a revelation! I just do bits at a time because as sure as eggs is eggs little people will undo all my good work the minute they come in the door. Life's too short I've decided; though that said I would like to get rid of the downstairs carpets which are way past their best. Yesterday I went round with a broom taking down cobwebs and today they've all popped up again. It just ain't worth it - especially when the sun's shining.

I loathe housework and though I'm retired yes, I do have to give myself a kick to get on with it! Each time I sort it out, I promise myself it'll be done weekly so that it won't get really bad, but somehow I find excuses all the time to read, visit friends, go rambling, go shopping, surf the net..... or any other displacement activity I can find.

adaunas Tue 01-Aug-17 10:46:43

Just been swimming (my best avoidance tactic!) If I've got Mon-Fri off, I put the cleaning down for Friday because I know I'll do it on a shorter timescale, but then I try to do bits in between the week's activities which makes me feel virtuous and leaves less to do on Friday.

illtellhim Tue 01-Aug-17 10:56:21

Take a woman as a lover, you'll be surprised at how quickly the housework, cooking, shopping even car cleaning gets done.

Kim19 Tue 01-Aug-17 10:59:16

I'm just SO grateful for my visitors and overnighters are a double whammy in that I have a deadline for my shame. Advice from my Mother (when she came to terms with how embarrassingly undomesticated I was) was to keep the place tidy and it gives an initial 'impression of clean'. Think she had a degree of accuracy there. Thank heavens she loved me in spite of my inadequacies.

Love yourself Imperfect27 - it's your life and you only get one go at it. As long as you don't create a major health hazard then so what?

Live, girl, just live!

Jane43 Tue 01-Aug-17 11:20:49

I used to do major cleans but it started to get overwhelming and, like you, I would procrastinate. So now I have started to do what my Mum used to do and have certain days for cleaning rooms, changing the bed etc and it really helps. Giving the kitchen a good clean on Mondays gets one of the worst jobs out of the way, a quick tidy up and vacuum then the rest of the day is free. Since I have done this I find I will start the clean early rather than put it off. I detest ironing so now I iron things on the day they have been washed and dried so the ironing basket doesn't get depressingly full.

paddyann Tue 01-Aug-17 11:25:39

Kim19 I always hated housework ,when we were newly married if I saw my in laws car coming up the road I used to put all the dirty dishes in the oven and sparay Pledge polish in the air in the hall and sitting room.MIL always said ...somebody's been busy....lol.It was years later I told her the truth

Day6 Tue 01-Aug-17 11:26:54

I do housework as and when the urge takes me. Loos, sinks and worktops have to be clean, but everything else can wait. It seems such a waste of life to me now I am older. It's never ending, but life is. I'd rather read, potter in the garden, see friends, watch a good film or take myself out somewhere. I used to be so houseproud too but my philosophy has changed.

I can clean all day long if visitors are due. That's the motivation I need!

I am thinking about burying the ever growing pile of ironing. Every time I do it (rarely) I find clothes I'd forgotten I have!

radicalnan Tue 01-Aug-17 11:34:17

I put my trousers on back to front this morning and despite the discomfort, I am already too tired to change them round.

I hate housework and am useless at it now and cooking and laundry and gardening, just keepng it all somehow respectable takes every ounce of energy I have........I also seem to have forgotten a lot of skills I used to have, sewing and cooking have just 'gone'.

I have been possessed by pain and depression for decades, I have no idea how I managed to work before retirment on do vol after.

Pain became my full time job at some point.

I do jobs in the TV ad breaks.....or have to set myself a time by which I will have washed up or washed the floor, currently that time is Christmas 2019..........where did all my energy go?

Imperfect27 Tue 01-Aug-17 11:39:41

Thanks for the permission to be my usual sloppy self GNetters smile. We live in a rented property and it is inspection day later this week so I want to spruce up a bit - nothing too major, but tidy and clean in all the important places smile. Next week we are away and my DD1 and family and DD2 and new girlfriend are coming to stay in our absence so I also want it to be nice for them. If I tell you that I bought the Mr Muscle (Yes, other oven cleaners are readily available) about 18 months ago ... well, that says it all really. Yes, life is too short and I tend to live it rather than clean most of the time. Still, I think it is quite funny that my DH said 'It will only take you half a day'...

NonnaW Tue 01-Aug-17 11:40:11

NanKate brilliant! That's just the excuse reasoning I can use when DH is endlessly busy and I'm feeling idle (all the time really blush).
No housework today, we are grandson sitting in his own home.
