Normal ? or OCD?

My family and friends would tell you I'm not housework obsessed....in fact some would say I only do it when its not possible to leave it any longer.BUT ...I had to remake the beds this morning after my grandaughter "helped" by making them for me .I like the duvet to come to just in front of the pillows, the pillows stacked with one standing and the boudoir cushion placed in between.Thats not how they were done.It made me think about how many other things I change or rearrange to how I like them .Then I realised thats probably why I do all the housework etc myself .So is this OCD ? Here was I thinking I was very casual about things house related and it seems I'm not.

Merlot, ?? I had a dog who used to jump on the bed just when I was making it or trying to change it!!

Um I am diagnosed with mild OCD so I guess things like this are normal to me. I like order and yes I like the bed made when I get out of it. I always tidy it up after hubby gets up too if he hasn't done it properly. I like the kitchen neat and tidy and well the whole house really. Just basics kept on top of each day

I do make my bed when I get up & put my throw over as cat likes to sleep on my bed during the day. Combination of cat with dirty paws & white bedding is not good.

I hate housework & can leave most jobs except washing up, once a day before I go to bed, bathroom is cleaned several times a week & kitchen surfaces wiped down. Hoovering gets done when I feel like & dusting when it suddenly annoys megrin.

I do like certain items in the right place but I wouldn't jump up straight away to put it right.

Kacee I hate to break this to you but spiders can get in any old where!

Grannyguitar Tue 02-May-17 13:38:25

I hang the duvet out of the window when the weather is good. If the rest of the town think I'm eccentric, that's their problem, not mine. It smells lovely and fresh when it comes in - why shouldn't I?

Teddy123 Tue 02-May-17 13:38:24

Have just read other replies. Ok I'm not OCD just fussy about having a clean and tidy home.

Teddy123 Tue 02-May-17 13:36:41

Only my son can make my 6' bed as well if not better than me. I hate scruffy beds ..... Bit like having beautiful garden borders withou the lawn being mowed.

I'm definitely OCD!!! Even my clothes are colour coordinated in the wardrobe. The kitchen cupboards are a little messy because OH uses them.

I like OCD .....

BlueBelle Tue 02-May-17 13:33:18

My duvet is pulled up, pillow plonked down that's my bed making when I had three small children it probably never got made so now is a BIG improvement no one to see it but me no desire to have it perfect just functional

Maranta Tue 02-May-17 13:12:16

Fussy is the word.

Stella14 Tue 02-May-17 13:04:14

Some obsessive tendancies are common. It's only a disorder (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder) when it significantly interfers with personal, occupational or social life.

gettingonabit Tue 02-May-17 12:44:13

I agree with ab.

OCD is a distressing condition that can prevent sufferers living a normal life. Being neat, tidy and organised is just that. I'm the same as you - i like my bed/house/surroundings a certain way and i can't relax properly unless things are just so. I don't see anything wrong with it. I'm a bit uptight maybe, but who cares?

What really bugs me is getting in at the end of the day to find things not as I would like.

BonnieBlooming Tue 02-May-17 12:12:42

I know I'm a bit OCD (although not in the mental health sense) and especially about the bed. I just don't feel comfortable until it's perfectly made, duvet smooth, pillows plumped etc. I think it's partly because we live in a bungalow and the bedroom door faces the kitchen door so if the bed was not made it would reprove me all day!

Anniebach Tue 02-May-17 12:03:03

paddyann, OCD is overused now and causing people who enjoy keeping their home as they like it to doubt .

If you have panics if something is moved / put in the wrong place, if you couldn't leave the house for what ever reason because you haven't carried out tasks then could be OCD, if enjoying having a place for everything etc then why not

Ask yourself, must I do it or troubles will befall me? or do I do it because I get enjoyment from it!
If the former then I think OCD,if the latter no

OCD brings anxiety, fear of danger for yourself or others, it brings misery

my mother was obsessive about housework ,even dad leaving a newspaper on the sideboard would cause ructions ,saucers were taken from under cups so she could wash them before we'd finished eating /drinking and she would set up a table in the garden with our lunch and a rolling picnic for hours so we didn't mess up the house.I've always avoided being like her and I thought I'd done it ...maybe not as well as I thought.

Kacee Tue 02-May-17 11:49:02

I have to hAve the open end of the pillowcases facing inwards just in case a spider crawls in

TriciaF Tue 02-May-17 11:37:34

Like a few of you, I'm not OCD about housework - husband does a lot of ours. But I hate clutter and long to have a good clearout now and again. Husband won't hear of it - he's an accumulator of possessions.

Lewlew Tue 02-May-17 11:25:38

I am not as fussy as some on here, but I like things tidy and do air my bed during the day.

My mother was OTT OCD and if you criticise children who help with housework chores, they will dread helping. I was constantly belittled because I missed a spot with the duster or the wood floor still had some dust bunnies in corners, etc etc. I turned out to be a very untidy young woman when I moved out on my own. It was several years before I realised that I wanted a clean and comfortable flat and did so my way.

In her later Parkinson's years, she obviously could not do any housework and finally realised it didn't matter saying that in her grandmother's day on their farm, no one could be 'that' finicky as there were farm chores to do. Clean yes, OCD, no.

lovebeigecardigans1955 Tue 02-May-17 11:16:21

I'd think that you were being particular. OCD is really for those who feel that their lives are unbearable unless they do something, such as continually washing their hands or jumping up to straighten ornaments because the compulsion to do so is unbearable.
My sister can't bear pictures or mirrors which are a bit wonky but I wouldn't call it OCD.

Greyduster Tue 02-May-17 11:07:06

Teetime grin! I am only inclined to be a bit over the top about a couple of things. One is toilet paper. If the loose end is hanging down the back of the roll, I have to turn it round, no matter where I am. I have been known to change it round when visiting friends and family. It absolutely has to be hanging down at the front of the roll or it becomes a silent issue that I can't seem to walk away from!! The other is the dishwasher. It has to be stacked a certain way, or I will take it all out and stack it again. I do this constantly when DH has stacked it, and yesterday when DD stacked it! Otherwise I am a complete slut and allergic to housework. Someone on here once said that dust was nature's way of protecting your furniture. I'll go with that.

Mermaid6 Tue 02-May-17 10:53:13

I am with Teetime, I have a very busy life, but like everything to be in order. cup handles facing the same way, pattern in the front, plates in size order and everything like that. I change it around if visitors position things differently to the norm for me. I do not like mess at all and have to make the bed as soon as I have showered. All my cupboards are tidy with clothes neatly folded and the fold facing me, with the clothes in size order. Clothes on hangers face the same way. To me that is completely normal and oh yes a very tidy airing cupboard too. My friend says I am OCD but I am not. I do not clean more than once a week, except for the bathrooms, kitchen and hovering which is done daily.
I am just tidy and particular. I do however accept that not everybody is like me.

paddyann Tue 02-May-17 10:50:48

Teetime and Anniebach it would irritate me all day if it wasn't right ,in fact I couldn't leave it if it wasn't.I air the beds for half an hour in the morning but they all have to be made up before I leave the house . I'm a bit the same way about whats put where in my kitchen ..but I always thought I just like to be organised ,not so sure now though .Sometimes my husband shakes his head when I move things back to "their place" Husbands wardrobe has things colour batched and all hung in the same direction and undewear drawer is seperated by colours too.Thhats normal though ...isn't it?

radicalnan Tue 02-May-17 10:46:44

Get some flowers in and a squirt of something lovely and the rest of it gets a cat's lick and a promise most of the time.

norose4 Tue 02-May-17 10:33:10

Not quite OCD but more 'sweet personal idiosyncrasies 'well that's what I like to call it when I have to have ornaments etc pointing in the correct exact position.& yes pillows plumped up it just the right way!?

adaunas Tue 02-May-17 10:32:19

Open the window for 1/2 an hour. Always throw the duvet right back to air. I sort the sheet if it's come unattached. DH shakes his pillows, but there's no point in shaking my memory foam pillow. It looks exactly the same afterwards.

Musicelf Tue 02-May-17 10:31:34

If I've got visitors, my house will look like a showhouse when they arrive. After that, who cares?! I grew up with a stereotypical German hausfrau of a mother, and I think I've spent my life rebelling.
