Er Teetime - don't understand your last post??
Good Morning Friday 7th August 2026
My family and friends would tell you I'm not housework obsessed....in fact some would say I only do it when its not possible to leave it any longer.BUT ...I had to remake the beds this morning after my grandaughter "helped" by making them for me .I like the duvet to come to just in front of the pillows, the pillows stacked with one standing and the boudoir cushion placed in between.Thats not how they were done.It made me think about how many other things I change or rearrange to how I like them .Then I realised thats probably why I do all the housework etc myself .So is this OCD ? Here was I thinking I was very casual about things house related and it seems I'm not.
Er Teetime - don't understand your last post??
The spare beds have throws on them as they are made up ready for visitors.
paddyann
My DGD 'helps' by bouncing on all the beds.
My friend was surprised that I don't treat the mattress with insecticide every six months vq
Teetime has she polished holes in it?
I like my bedroom just so.
Minimalistic as can't sleep if our room is in anyway untidy.
In January I bought a lovely white quilt cover adorned with butterflies in different shades of purple.
I thought it would be just the thing for the dull days of winter .
The quilt looked fresh and inviting but........
Ahrrh The matching pillows were so...wrong
The butterflies are at the opening vents
And are not a mirror image
which means to put them outwards one cover is always upside down
My solution was to buy another set and mix and match the pillow slips.
unfortunately the were sold out in store and the internet.
I know very well that this is not a world problem .
I accept it is just one of life's little irritants
I was accused of having OCD as I put socks on the line paired up and everything in order with all rousers together, then tops, then blouses etc. All underwear together and in person order. Sounds OTT right? Mum was blind and it meant I could hand out the washing and she made a darned good job of folding and putting away as she could tell what was what. I have carried on as it makes it easier for whoever else puts ours away
Trousers as opposed to rousers!!!!!
She beats it (the furniture) into submission with vigorous hovering several times a day. She also counts the vegetables at dinner and they have to be an even number (she is an accountant).
I agree with you, Paddyann. I do think these fussy habits are a bit OCD and can understand that others are not so uptight about having things 'just so'. However, I love having my house looking gorgeous and 'right' and feel that if it's my labour making it look how I want it that's skin off no one else's nose.
I work like the servants in 'Downton Abbey' and enjoy the fruits of my labour like the Dowager Countess.
Oh dear, I am going to have to shut a few doors if any of you visit!
It's not a mess but it is home.
Weelll... if the cat is asleep on my bed before I make it, I really don't like to disturb him... that's my excuse anyway. But really I hate housework, I see it as an interruption to an interesting life. People coming tends to prompt me to have a good go at it. Probably I'm just a slob by nature!
If I've got visitors, my house will look like a showhouse when they arrive. After that, who cares?! I grew up with a stereotypical German hausfrau of a mother, and I think I've spent my life rebelling.
Open the window for 1/2 an hour. Always throw the duvet right back to air. I sort the sheet if it's come unattached. DH shakes his pillows, but there's no point in shaking my memory foam pillow. It looks exactly the same afterwards.
Not quite OCD but more 'sweet personal idiosyncrasies 'well that's what I like to call it when I have to have ornaments etc pointing in the correct exact position.& yes pillows plumped up it just the right way!?
Get some flowers in and a squirt of something lovely and the rest of it gets a cat's lick and a promise most of the time.
Teetime and Anniebach it would irritate me all day if it wasn't right ,in fact I couldn't leave it if it wasn't.I air the beds for half an hour in the morning but they all have to be made up before I leave the house . I'm a bit the same way about whats put where in my kitchen ..but I always thought I just like to be organised ,not so sure now though .Sometimes my husband shakes his head when I move things back to "their place" Husbands wardrobe has things colour batched and all hung in the same direction and undewear drawer is seperated by colours too.Thhats normal though ...isn't it?
I am with Teetime, I have a very busy life, but like everything to be in order. cup handles facing the same way, pattern in the front, plates in size order and everything like that. I change it around if visitors position things differently to the norm for me. I do not like mess at all and have to make the bed as soon as I have showered. All my cupboards are tidy with clothes neatly folded and the fold facing me, with the clothes in size order. Clothes on hangers face the same way. To me that is completely normal and oh yes a very tidy airing cupboard too. My friend says I am OCD but I am not. I do not clean more than once a week, except for the bathrooms, kitchen and hovering which is done daily.
I am just tidy and particular. I do however accept that not everybody is like me.
Teetime
! I am only inclined to be a bit over the top about a couple of things. One is toilet paper. If the loose end is hanging down the back of the roll, I have to turn it round, no matter where I am. I have been known to change it round when visiting friends and family. It absolutely has to be hanging down at the front of the roll or it becomes a silent issue that I can't seem to walk away from!! The other is the dishwasher. It has to be stacked a certain way, or I will take it all out and stack it again. I do this constantly when DH has stacked it, and yesterday when DD stacked it! Otherwise I am a complete slut and allergic to housework. Someone on here once said that dust was nature's way of protecting your furniture. I'll go with that.
I'd think that you were being particular. OCD is really for those who feel that their lives are unbearable unless they do something, such as continually washing their hands or jumping up to straighten ornaments because the compulsion to do so is unbearable.
My sister can't bear pictures or mirrors which are a bit wonky but I wouldn't call it OCD.
I am not as fussy as some on here, but I like things tidy and do air my bed during the day.
My mother was OTT OCD and if you criticise children who help with housework chores, they will dread helping. I was constantly belittled because I missed a spot with the duster or the wood floor still had some dust bunnies in corners, etc etc. I turned out to be a very untidy young woman when I moved out on my own. It was several years before I realised that I wanted a clean and comfortable flat and did so my way.
In her later Parkinson's years, she obviously could not do any housework and finally realised it didn't matter saying that in her grandmother's day on their farm, no one could be 'that' finicky as there were farm chores to do. Clean yes, OCD, no.
Like a few of you, I'm not OCD about housework - husband does a lot of ours. But I hate clutter and long to have a good clearout now and again. Husband won't hear of it - he's an accumulator of possessions.
I have to hAve the open end of the pillowcases facing inwards just in case a spider crawls in
my mother was obsessive about housework ,even dad leaving a newspaper on the sideboard would cause ructions ,saucers were taken from under cups so she could wash them before we'd finished eating /drinking and she would set up a table in the garden with our lunch and a rolling picnic for hours so we didn't mess up the house.I've always avoided being like her and I thought I'd done it ...maybe not as well as I thought.
paddyann, OCD is overused now and causing people who enjoy keeping their home as they like it to doubt .
If you have panics if something is moved / put in the wrong place, if you couldn't leave the house for what ever reason because you haven't carried out tasks then could be OCD, if enjoying having a place for everything etc then why not
Ask yourself, must I do it or troubles will befall me? or do I do it because I get enjoyment from it!
If the former then I think OCD,if the latter no
OCD brings anxiety, fear of danger for yourself or others, it brings misery
I know I'm a bit OCD (although not in the mental health sense) and especially about the bed. I just don't feel comfortable until it's perfectly made, duvet smooth, pillows plumped etc. I think it's partly because we live in a bungalow and the bedroom door faces the kitchen door so if the bed was not made it would reprove me all day!
