Snoring

Also a snorer - and often snuffly during the day. Diagnosed as rhinitis and have been prescribed Beconase nasal spray which seems to help a bit especially in combination with a decongestant, though not reliably and leaves a dry mouth on the morning. At its worst DH prods me awake and I decamp to the spare room. Not a good state of affairs nor very easy on holiday.

The Daily Telegraph had an article about snoring in the features section last Monday (10th April). It gave a brief description of exercises that are reckoned to really improve or cure snoring. It's important to address the problem because, long term, it affects your health as well as your OH. If I can access a link, I'll post it.

I truly believe my Husband's snoring made me deaf. I could sleep through it but I would wake with my eardrums vibrating, even the one furthest away ! He's not well now and doesn't do it. Separate rooms if I had my time again. The best one !

Mine finally admitted he did snore when he stayed away on business and a chap in the next hotel room complained to reception.

Turned out to be sleep apnoea and he now wears a mask in bed to keep the airway open.

No more snoring... but if he gets out to go to the loo during the night, he looks like Elephant Man silhouetted against the moon !

Also... he went to a sleep apnoea Conference in Coventry. Just about everyone in the room was overweight.

Separate rooms?? may be the push he needs to get this dealt with.

Maybe rule out sleep apnea first. After that has been ruled out - separate rooms! And bathrooms!

Use the guest room room for sleep.

I have a deviated septum but do not snore. How do I know? I slept in the same room as my brother on holiday once to visit a friend, he thought I had died. I also share with my friend on holiday and she does snore. I know I sleep with my mouth closed I think mouth open sleepers snore. I am off with my friend to Canada in June, I just have to put up with the lack of sleep. She did use a nasal gel and that did work, then she stopped using it why I don't know.

DH snores loudly so an undisturbed night is out of the question, I think the seperate bedrooms idea is the best suggestion,having said that, the past two nights there has been no snoring from DH, he is trying to lose weight, so maybe we have cracked the code, I hope so.

Gaggi3 - my husband's snoring also improved after having a stent, though the drugs he takes mean that he gets up to go to the loo several times a night so he's kindly decided to sleep in a separate room which has a bathroom.
Personally I've found that sleeping on my back always makes me snore, which actually wakes me up! DH snores more on his back but can snore in any position really...

Having lived with a snorer I found that separate rooms didn't really help because I could still hear Him! He lost some weight and it helped a lot,

My dh snores like a freight train hurtling down the tracks,not only do we have separate bedrooms, these rooms are at opposite ends of the house and I can still hear him at times.

Fortunately my dh is in the basement and I am on the 2nd floor...

My husband used to snore like a freight train too,until he invested in a snore guard. They are a bit like a mouth guard worn by rugby players but are designed to push the bottom jaw forwards,slightly. He can warm it and get it to fit exactly. Since then (about six years ago) no more snoring. He doesn't always need to wear it now as his jaw automatically gets in the right position.
They certainly don't look pretty and are a bit uncomfortable at first but well worth it. He kept waking himself up with his snoring so now we both get a good nights sleep.

This thread made me chuckle. I'm a snorer myself, have been for donkeys years. In hospital having had my first born I warned the other three mums in the small ward that I snored. I had a wonderful night sleep and woke to find them all glaring bleary eyed at me. Apparently I was lucky not to have had my bed pushed out into the car park.

No wonder you live on a narrow boat!

sarahellenwhitney - my OH is now taking sleeping pills to try and stop him acting out his dreams and the problem is much reduced.

I am seeing my GP on Tuesday and will be talking with her about my wheezy cough, snoring and loss of voice at times. I booked the appointment to see about my waterworks, but that may have to wait for another occasion. Just keep stuffing the pads down the drawers!

My husband also snores like a pneumatic drill. Its even worse when he has had a couple of pints. We have tried everything and the best remedy is separate bedrooms. There is a surgical procedure available but I wouldn't put him at risk at our age. Recently I found a fun "stop snoring device". It's a stick with a boxing club on the end of it...(its soft of course!). A few whacks and the snoring stops for a time. I keep it for when we go on holiday as we certainly can't go the expense of booking two rooms/cabins. I've heard that if you put a tennis ball down the back of a pyjamas the person won't be able to lie on his back...no snoring!

Snoring loudly is really awful. Our dentist made a snore guard for my husband and it definitely enhanced our marriage!

I used a snore guard for several years, one that you mold in boiling water so it fits your mouth and it certainly helped. But I've stopped using it because it significantly altered my bite. It has pulled my lower teeth forward so I now have an overbite.
We have resorted to separate rooms, and earplugs for my husband when we're on holiday.
But finding earplugs that actually work?!!! We have tried foam ones (they won't stay in and have made my husband's ears sore as he continually screws them in), wax ones which don't protrude, ( expensive as they are 'single' use). If anyone has recommendations for earplugs that work, I'd be grateful.

I snore like an bronchial bull elephant. Find out if the snorer snores through his/her nose or mouth. Easy to do as you're awake anyway.

A mouth snorer needs a gadget that keeps the mouth closed whilst asleep. The nose snorer (like me) needs a gadget that keeps the nostrils open.

I have a little gadget that slips inside my nose. It cost a couple of pounds and is a godsend. You feel it, although it's not uncomfortable, for a couple of minutes then forget it's there. DH says that I still snore sometimes but nothing like I used to and nowhere near as loud. He can actually sleep again.

The best cure is separate rooms! Good night's sleep for all then.

Being over weight is another cause of snoring. Try losing a stone and see the difference it will make. Also try adding another pillow so the snorer is not flat on his/her back. The person who does all the snoring is not aware they are doing it so no use falling out about it.

I think my GC is going to have trouble later because he already snores quietly and he is only 2yrs old!

Probably tried to strangle you because of the snoringI know I feel like strangling hubby when I'm lying awake listening to his snoring and I've got to get up for work. Tried earplugs don't work for me, always worst if he's had a drink. The fingers on the face sounds great, thanks annifrance will try that I usually just push him over on to his side.
