"As the husband's mother I think you often have to expect to be overlooked and just shrug your shoulders and get on with it."
I just read this in the 'Latest' topics on GS. I must say that I think it is totally wrong the way that mothers of the groom are treated as second class! Just because it has always been this way does not mean that it should carry on like that.
Surely any DIL worth her salt would want to start a good relationship with her new MIL, not get on the wrong foot straight away?
I have been to many wedding receptions and it is true, the mother of the new husband hardly ever gets a mention. Even my own dil did this, thanking her mother for all she had done, but not a word about me. I paid for the flowers; cars; bells and church fees; and the registra's fees as well so I felt I should have been thanked as well. It doesn't take much effort on the part of the bride does it? Of course I didn't say anything, not wanting to spoil the day.
I also have a friend who was asked to change her outfit because it was similar in style and the same colour as the bride's mothers! I know for a fact that the mil to be had trawled the shops before she found something suitable that she felt presentable in. She was gutted!
So insensitive I think. Anyone been on the receiving end? What do you think about it?
Reducing contact because my heart just isn't in it.
"Old fashioned" expressions that young people have never heard.

! Of course, she refused, and that set the tone, not only for the wedding day events but for many, many months after. Ridiculous way to behave.
