I have just typed Dubya, nothing else, into google and all but one of the entries on the first page refer to George W Bush.

He was widely called that in all the media, broadcast, online and print.

Not sure how I missed it, in more ways than one.

I am though a lot younger than most grans on here, and cant say I was very interested in politics, even 20 years ago. And certainly not american politics.

Ok,where was I when all the good things happened,in the last years all I've seen is wars,unemployment,NHS crisis,schools with long waiting lists,police ignoring you unless it's a murder or a racial issue,the rich getting a bleddy site richer,the African people still starving,none of the presidents or prime ministers have solved anything.
So the people,that's me,are asking for help,what's wrong with that,or don't we matter because we're just the Woking class.

On a slightly different note. Myself and DH were in Barbados when Obama was inaugurated. We laughed when a man was shouting "Come and buy your Obama water". Just thinking is he still there shouting "Come and buy your Trump water" ?

The Obama administration has been marred by debt, scandals, foreign policy failures, and an overall fragmentation of the USA. He has plunged the United States into an abyss of economic debt that will create generations of American servitude paying off his wayward spending endeavours. The Red, White and Blue’s epitaph will read like a litany of failures perpetrated on both the American people and the world by this president.

I think all the shock horror over Trump has been vastly overdone. He is not the first deeply flawed man to be elected into the post, even in our lifetime. Think tricky Dicky (Richard Nixon) or even Dubya (George W Bush), both did immense damage to their nation. Arguably ISIS and the spread of terrorism are the direct results of Bush instigating the Iraq War.

What we have seen with the election of Trump and the Brexit referendum is the triumph of democracy. Both were marginal/procedural victories but the victors won by the laws that governed the separate elections and if you have won, you have won and it doesn't really matter whether it is by a few percent or by having most electors in an electoral college. It may not be be the result that the most vocal in either country wanted, but the elections were free and fair (I very much doubt if Russians intervention, true or not,turned a single vote).

However this is where democracy needs to walk the walk and not just talk the talk. We preach enough about democracy to other countries, now we must show our belief in it. Those opposed to Trump and staunch remainers, must accept the majority vote and work with it. Democrats in the US must follow the accepted ways of constitutional opposition and those who voted remain must now work towards the best possible Brexit. I voted remain, but now believe that all my efforts should go towards ensuring we are out of Europe as soon as possible and finding a new route to peace and prosperity.

Today Africa has shown us how to deal, peacefully, with those who will not accept the results of the ballot box. The defeated President of Gambia has finally been persuaded accept he lost the election and must vacate the presidency. It was done by the loyalty of the Gambian army to a new democratically elected President and a quiet show of force by the Economic Community of West African States (Ecowas).

Who said that Reagan was a terrible President? Someone further up thread, cannot read it all now, it's late.

However, I have just heard reported on the BBC that people were very worried when Reagan was elected as they thought he would be useless, just a 'cowboy' but that he turned out to be one of the best Presidents of all time.

Peaseblossom I think you will find that the world-wide economic recession which started at the end of 2007 (as Obama took office in January 2008) was responsible for much of America's economic problems, and could have been much worse under another president. Indeed much caused by the likes of Bush and the cost of his wars.
The USA was knee deep into in debt (mainly to China!!) way before Obama,

As far as foreign policy failures, the Bushes rushed to war in Iraq and Afghanistan, all spectacular failures when the USA was left with egg on its face, and too many body bags, I can perhaps understand the reluctance to repeat such actions.

At least Obama conducted himself on the international scene with dignity and gravitas; something we are unlikely to see in Trump.

agree entirely with you Anya Obama inherited a mess from incompetent Bush and did the best he could with his hands tightly tied, he conducted himself with dignity and tried very hard to implement a lot more than was actually ever achieved like the gun stuff Presidents have little clout if the noises behind aren't singing the same song
