Birthday

Happy birthday. All is not lost. Mine just got the same cards and pressies as other years, no family get together, except I took mixed bag of lady friends out for a fixed menu lunch and DH and I went on holiday then. However, for my 64th, I ended up with all my family around me, not a special birthday, but it became a special birthday

My birthday comes between Xmas and new year and it is always a low key affair, even the 'special' ones. Would hate to have had a surprise party but would like, just occasionally, to be made a bit of a fuss of. Make sure you 'forget' family birthdays and turn up a day late with a token present and card, that may make them think!

Jane had a great idea so if no-one did remember and you haven't said anything yet, I would go out for the day today, treat yourself, eat out and return with lots of goodies and flowers for yourself. Plonk yourself down in a cozy armchair and enjoy your treats.

They'll remember pretty quick.

I've only just read this thread. Chris hasn't given us any more information on how the day turned out. Perhaps they had a surprise party arranged and the "ignoring" was all play-acting.

I can empathise totally with this. I absolutely love getting cards with nice words, but they are sadly lacking these days. What a good idea to get yourself some nice cards and flowers!! That'll show 'em...!!!!!! ? ???

Sadly you are not alone. This is one email I got yesterday.

It was my 50th yesterday and no-one really remembered or could be bothered to do anything special.

It's a good idea to get yourself a delivery of flowers and tomorrow have yourself a day out.

Dear Chris, you are acting as a modest woman, you appear to only have men at home. It is well known they live on a different emotional planet from women. Buy a copy of Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus and act on it!!! All the advice above is so true.

Happy belated birthday Chris. I've enjoyed reading the comments on here recommending you remind family a few weeks ahead so they can plan for the big day. I don't agree with this advice. If they need reminding then what's the point? A birthday is an opportunity for those around you to show how much they care. Also, if you try 'forgetting' their own birthdays, then this just reinforces the idea that it's not important to you! Sorry to be negative, but I speak as a mum whose husband/children are very patchy in their displays of affection.

Belated happy 60th birthday to you! I have to admit that my family are never allowed to forget my birthday lol and when it was my 50th I made it last for 6 months. I arranged my own party and had a weekend away in Cardiff with my best friend. Her birthday is the day after mine so she had a big party at home as well. We also went out for a day trip on my actual birthday. I shall probably do something similar when I'm 60. I LOVE birthdays, especially ones with 0 on the end.

Belated Happy Birthday. I know what it's like to be forgotten - yet if you forget their birthdays, or their partners, you always get an earful, don't you. I've got my 70th birthday in January 2018, and I would love to think that someone would treat me to a cruise (like my SIL did for my brother last year), but that would be hoping for too much. I'd settle for a nice card though. Still, 60 is a bit birthday and I'm surprised but as you say, everybody was probably still getting over Christmas and the New Year. Hope they make a real fuss of you once it clicks.

I feel for you. Last year, not a 'big' birthday, but not one card from family - DH, DS, 2 DDs and 5 DGC. DD1 was getting ready to go on a short holiday the next day and DD2 was on holiday. I did feel sorry for myself. Can't help thinking at times, that they should treasure each year they have us, considering how useful we are, not just the 'special' birthdays. DD1 wouldn't dare forget the in-laws' birthdays as the flak would be considerable!

Text your husband and ask him where he's taking you for your birthday because you need to decide what to wear given that it's a special one. Treat it as something that it hasn't occurred to you isn't going to happen.

Jane's suggestion is superb! It is an awkward time of year to have a birthday (my brother's is 2nd January!) but one would expect close family to at least say happy birthday! But as others have said - milk it! Happy 60th Birthday - at least The Queen (whoever she'll be) will remember your 100th!!

chris4159, I have a suspicion something overwhelmingly surprising is about to happen to you. Seems a remarkable coincidence that EVERYONE has forgotten........ I live in hope! Whether I'm right or wrong - enjoy your day. Also.....do remember that making the '0's special is 'man made. They're ALL special

I hope you got something in the evening but it is men isn't it? After reminding my grandson to get his mum a card this Christmas I watched him write it as he was coming downstairs to give it to her My granddaughter picked up a card she loved for her mum and it was only when my daughter opened it did she realise it said happy Christmas to my step mum luckily my daughter saw the funny side
If it's any consolation my youngest daughter gave me zilch for Christmas although i heard her asking the kids what she should buy the childminder and the eldest girls boyfriends mum who she's never met or spoken to Ummmm

The same happened to me on my 60th and I felt very sad. Only my daughter sent a card and no celebrations at all. Later on in the year however I realised that my boys just hadn't realised I was that old so it never occurred to them it was a special birthday. A compliment really then.
I hope your family made up for it when they found out, I just kept quiet at the time and gave thanks for everything else I have to be grateful for.

I'm not fussed about ordinary birthdays but the decades are different.Even if you have to organise it yourself you should do something. For my 50th we went to Prague (we tend to do holidays not presents anyway) for my 60th the USA .Both oganised by me ..Ditto significant wedding anniversaries. Spent 30th in India. For my 65th -yes am stretching it to half decades now-my Dds took me to the Opera at Covent Garden
I long ago decided that rather than feel resentful I would organise celebrations myself. Or state very firmly what I would like well in advance.

My birthday is in January and my son's is just before Christmas....bad time for birthdays.

Sorry to hear about your birthday. Since it was your 60th it might have been an idea to raise the subject a few weeks ago and ask to discuss ideas for your special day ?

I got a huge 60 badge last year and wore it all day, maybe get one and wear it ? I do hope you have ordered flowers and bought cards as suggested, and organised some treats for yourself.

Gosh...that really sucks. You could do what the Queen does......have another birthday when the weather is warmer. In the meantime...belated birthday wishes.
