Christmas as a "young mum" - do you miss it?

DD rang me at 8, back from Waitrose - respect! I was settling down with my second cuppa.
However I felt some nostalgia for the days when once DH was finished I would lead the assault on the supermarket. DH''s job on Christmas Eve was to drive to the turkey farm if possible with a child or two in the back to ease the pressure at home.
I would have had to hide the presents where they couldn't find them (once round at our neighbour's!)
The memory of listening to carols from Kings while making mince pies, waiting for Granny and Grandpa to arrive and DH took them all to the Carol Service .
And then the stockings!! Foolishly our DC hung them on the ends of their beds so the ritual of trying to creep in without waking them would start. One year I remember it was 3.30(!) before I managed and exactly 11/2 hours later DD1 was jumping up and down on us in bed shrieking "Santa's been!"
Then there was the year I smelled gas in the kitchen at 8 pm on Christmas Eve! (Yes the gasman turned out and fixed it, so we didn't have to cancel Christmas)
Oh dear getting maudlin, but those were happy days. I hope yours were and will continue to be so. tchsmile

Millbrook.....I am American and I live in the US. How can I not take exception when you say "weird and self obsessed country that is America."? I assure you that many of us here in America are NOT weird or self obsessed. Given our recent election and some of the other craziness that goes on, I can see how easily we've become the target of such short sighted conclusions. Truth is the entire world already owns a hefty measure of things weird and self obsessed...and with just as many exceptions.
Having said that, I can assure you that in America there are many smart, kind, compassionate people who live by sound values, solid work ethic and good habits. So, please be mindful of your words because they can be hurtful and always remember that judging others is God's job, not ours.
