Gransnet today....Just my opinion.

Don't want to completely hi-jack the 'Christmas in four words' thread so I've started this one. Feel free to shoot me down. I don't do flouncing. grin

Some time ago, the 'What does Gransnet mean to you?'thread developed into a 'Bring back jingl' campaign. Despite this, it has become clear that we are not entitled to an explanation as to why she is still shackled to the naughty step

We inhabit a goldfish bowl which must be respectable to the outside world looking in on an ageing cyber community. Old people are only expected to be curmudgeonly in books and TV nonsense. Manufactured threads about growing old disgracefully are perfectly acceptable so long as they fit the approved template which has been set by people who are NOT as old as we are.

All well and good until a situation causes a ding-dong. We must be ever mindful that Gransnet is a business relying on advertising revenue. Swearing is tolerated on Mumsnet because it's acceptable in the young and feisty whereas the 'one foot in the grave' club have to leave all that behind and remember our opinions don't really count any more.

The political threads are argumentative because that's politics. You can't put a straight jacket on a well informed if opiniated point of view which is as it should be. Folk who hide behind the sofa when all hell breaks loose should know better than to get caught in the cross-fire.

So....We're allowed to moan about Brexit, complain about our aches and pains and chat about telly dramas/adverts/music. We willingly offer support to complete strangers even though it often comes back to bite us. I'm not the only one who can spot a set-up. Above all, we must remain bland!

There were two members who railed against this. One is sadly no longer with us and the other has been kicked into touch for being too outspoken. Unsurprisingly, they rarely saw eye to eye but that's LIFE!

I'm off to put the joint in the oven. I might even start a thread about it. hmm

Only joking!

youarerightornot so true my Scottish pals say. "Aye, too fucking right" wink

DaphneBroon Mon 28-Nov-16 22:40:42

I am not aware of GNHQ bothering to edit posts and frankly don't believe they do.
The phrase you quote is not unheard of among expat Scots and to start flinging accusations of racism about is bollocks out of order.
How many "feisty members exactly, have been shut down?
Aye, right.

Youarerightornot Mon 28-Nov-16 22:58:13

As you know DB, many have been. You have been in the past, but that does not mean it is right.

We are not all grey haired old women who humph our tits up in disapproval like Les Dawson depicted.

Bellanonna Mon 28-Nov-16 23:01:26

My DH is feisty (or so I've just learnt) ?

Youarerightornot Mon 28-Nov-16 23:05:10

Enjoy your night Bella grin.

Bellanonna Mon 28-Nov-16 23:05:48

Thanks !

Youarerightornot Mon 28-Nov-16 23:13:31

I am surprised you have time to communicate, but carry on grin

Bellanonna Mon 28-Nov-16 23:17:22

Feisty = farty apparently. That's all !

Youarerightornot Mon 28-Nov-16 23:19:08

Lol x

confusedconfused

So clearly a former member under a new name, well fancy that hmm .

Shanma Mon 28-Nov-16 23:51:17

Daphne Broon. Having a go at people seems to float your boat, that's for sure. Not sure how finding someone irritating and deciding not to read or respond to her posts is " Bloody rude and obnoxious", also it seems to me that you think I should not voice an opinion, and yet it is perfectly fine to call me bloody rude and obnoxious, hmmm cannot quite work that one out.

Regarding including you too, my pleasure DB. I wouldn't waste your time typing me a reply. I shall not read or answer it.

Thanks Merlot for an Interesting thread which has had a bit of absolutely everything in it. smile

I came on to GN right at the start but didn't stay long as I personally found it confrontational then and couldn't cope with it as I was only just post stroke. I came back after quite a while and am dealing with things better nowadays and think that the tone of the forum is better overall. There are still things I find difficult but I just disappear and try to forget that thread and that is often after offering a brew which is generally my code for "sorry, can't manage any more". Not intended as an insult but just a TTFN. There are a fair few others like me who come on here for company and so I would agree that it is needful to be aware of the vulnerability of others.
I have to say that JBF was quite startling to begin with but as I came to understand her better I warmed to her and often had a laugh at some of the things she came out with although not all. I was glad for some of her small throw away kindnesses about which I am sure she was blissfully unaware. She is a sad miss as she could be relied on to brighten my day as she was one of the grans for whom I always looked when I came on.
In an effort to spare anyone's blushes I won't mention who else I still look for!
Overall I suppose we, who are still here, need to start threads which are more interesting, amusing, articulate, challenging, informative and understanding to ensure that there is something for everyone! hmm
And having exhausted myself thinking all that through I think I will have a brew, if you don't mind, and say TTFN. grin

Totally agree that we shouldn't look back lucky , but if this continues that's exactly what we will all be doing like other members from other failed sites ... looking back and remembering the good old days sad the trigger happy need to realise the damage they are causing. Maybe that's the problem, they have infiltrated GN after the havoc they caused on those failed sites.

TriciaF Tue 29-Nov-16 14:14:34

I've been trying to work out what has changed on GN, if anything, since I joined 3 years ago, and I honestly can't think of much.
There's always been a few strong characters who don't mind getting involved in verbal dingdongs. And for some reason they always seem to attract a big audience (including me) - a bit like a Punch and Judy show. They're sort of like cult characters who attract a following. Then one morning you sign in and the thread or the poster has gone ( not so much on here, other forum mods are more ruthless.)
With the huge membership on here I can't see GN becoming 'bland', hope not anyway. There'll always be someone like Jings - but not the same, she's in a class of her own.
But is that the purpose of forums? As Synonymous said in her last comment - we need a variety of posts.

Anya Tue 29-Nov-16 14:42:52

Yes DB give it a rest.

Anya Tue 29-Nov-16 14:43:46

If Kitty and Shanma want to slog it out then that's up to them.

kittylester Tue 29-Nov-16 15:13:15

I'm not slogging anything out with anyone, I merely disagreed, politely, with 2 of the posts that Shanma made.

Candlefran Tue 29-Nov-16 15:13:56

Excellent post Synonymous. smile

Candlefran Tue 29-Nov-16 15:14:17

In fact, have one on me. wine

CariGransnet (GNHQ) Tue 29-Nov-16 15:44:02

Just for reference - we never edit posts!

merlotgran Tue 29-Nov-16 16:07:06

Yes. Thank you for your post, Synonymous

merlotgran Tue 29-Nov-16 16:18:23

In fact, Thanks for all the replies. Apart from one or two posts it's been an enlightening thread and it's often a good thing to air our differences.

I hope it soon disappears off the active list while we're all still talking!! grin

rosesarered Tue 29-Nov-16 17:46:02

To say this is a racist website is sheer nonsense.HQ do not edit any posts, or change wording, so all the 'Aye right' stuff was made up then. Why any poster would come on here and say that (making out that Scottish posters are edited) is beyond understanding.

rosesarered Tue 29-Nov-16 17:46:32

.....but funny.grin

rosesarered Tue 29-Nov-16 17:47:54

I agree with TriciaF and can't see a lot of changes in the last 3 years.
