One of the few days when I was totally organised. The small beef joint had cooked to perfection, the potatoes par-boiled ready for roasting, the vegetables prepared. An hour in the garden, there were three pots needed planting up, and then hang out the washing! OUCH!! Not part of the plan at all, flat on my back - heard the hip crack. Spent half an hour yelling for help - my husband is indoors listening to the gardening programme and I realise I am in a very enclosed space blocking my calls. Drag myself (painfully) nearer to a gap and spent another half hour yelling, and then just as I lifted myself up to call again, I noticed our opposite neighbours curtain move and frantically waved - she had heard my previous calls but not seen me behind the pots. The para-medic came within 20 minutes, and I then waited another 1 hour and 40 minutes for the ambulance. I had been on the ground for three hours. The para-medic was furious, my husband worried to death, and I was in pain! However, we have one of the best hospitals in the country here, and the treatment I received was excellent (except I can't understand why I was put in the geriatric ward!) I was home within 10 days, and although I am using a walking aid, can walk unaided for short distances.
The other half is not so cocky now - always convinced he would 'manage' on his own - perhaps once upon a time, but his eyesight now is not so good, and close writing is difficult for him. He can't see the time settings on the cooker or the buttons on the microwave, so he seemed to live in tinned soup, fish and chips and tea and biscuits. Which when you come to think of it is a great deal more than some folk have.
