PRINTMISS Fri 25-Nov-16 08:19:36

One of the few days when I was totally organised. The small beef joint had cooked to perfection, the potatoes par-boiled ready for roasting, the vegetables prepared. An hour in the garden, there were three pots needed planting up, and then hang out the washing! OUCH!! Not part of the plan at all, flat on my back - heard the hip crack. Spent half an hour yelling for help - my husband is indoors listening to the gardening programme and I realise I am in a very enclosed space blocking my calls. Drag myself (painfully) nearer to a gap and spent another half hour yelling, and then just as I lifted myself up to call again, I noticed our opposite neighbours curtain move and frantically waved - she had heard my previous calls but not seen me behind the pots. The para-medic came within 20 minutes, and I then waited another 1 hour and 40 minutes for the ambulance. I had been on the ground for three hours. The para-medic was furious, my husband worried to death, and I was in pain! However, we have one of the best hospitals in the country here, and the treatment I received was excellent (except I can't understand why I was put in the geriatric ward!) I was home within 10 days, and although I am using a walking aid, can walk unaided for short distances.
The other half is not so cocky now - always convinced he would 'manage' on his own - perhaps once upon a time, but his eyesight now is not so good, and close writing is difficult for him. He can't see the time settings on the cooker or the buttons on the microwave, so he seemed to live in tinned soup, fish and chips and tea and biscuits. Which when you come to think of it is a great deal more than some folk have.
Thought you might like to know what had happened to me! Enjoy your days

Wishing you both a swift and complete recovery! A friend, 90, inadvertently slid down my steepish stairs and had extensive bruising on her bottom. The odd thing is that her stairs are even steeper than mine, neither would be allowed by today's building regulations.

Sorry to hear about your accident Printmiss but glad you are recovering now, take things steadily though.
I recently fell downstairs and landed in the dogs water bowl, sat there for 10 min looking like an incontinent old woman. Fortunately I had only a cracked rib and sprained ankle so not too long to recover.

In hospital I asked for a couple of specific nighties, a skirt and underwear and got a huge assortment of unwanted jumpers. But it was a kind thought!

Flylady.com. suggests also an 'evacuate your home' bag. Many of her followers are in the US and when there are tornados, grass fires or floods the appreciation flows in (pun unintended).

Keep meaning to do an emergency hospital bag. Path to hell and all that. I really must do it. Tomorrow?

JackyB Sun 27-Nov-16 11:53:48

My biggest worry in that situation would be explaining to DH what I need in my overnight bag in hospital. Obviously you managed hat somehow, so well done, Mr Print.

Take care - don't underdo the convalescing - keep him on his toes!

Best wishes Printmiss and glad to hear you have recovered after such a nasty experience flowers

Really up and almost running (who I am I kidding). Feeling much better now, even getting frustrated with the other half, things must be looking up. Thank you all for the good wishes. Think the freezer is on the blink, just what I need at the moment, and in time for Christmas, oh what joys!

I wondered where you were lately Printmiss. I`m so glad you`re alright now, but it must have been a horrible experience for you.

What an awful experience printmiss.
I'm so glad you are ok now flowers

All the best Printmiss . That's another thing that GN has taught me - train DH to look after himself. Mine would shop and cook but would have no clean plates etc. or clothes and has no idea about household admin.

I'm glad your on the mend Printmiss it sound a scary thing to have happened. I expect you'll have to be patient with yourself and your husband while you recover. Take it easy and don't over do things. Just sit and post on G.N. The television is full of cheesy Christmas films for you to watch a during your recovery wink flowers

annodomini Fri 25-Nov-16 10:45:38

What a nightmare for you Printmiss. Lots of us live in dread of having a fall and it's a hazardous time of year with soggy or icy leaves all over the place. Did they pin your hip or replace it? I'm so glad you are comfortable now and able to get around at home but no gardening for you and do send your DH out to hang up the washing. flowers

Bellanonna Fri 25-Nov-16 10:33:12

What an awful thing to happen PRINTMISS. It can't have been too warm at the end of October so hope you didn't get too chilled lying there waiting to be heard. Thank goodness your neighbour was at home. Hope you are recovering well and the mobile in the pocket is a good idea.?

Elegran Fri 25-Nov-16 10:26:03

A dreadful ordeal, printmiss, being stuck with no-one hearing your calls. One very good reason for keeping a mobile phone in your pocket at all times!

shysal Fri 25-Nov-16 10:16:56

flowers to you PRINTMISS. Wishing you a speedy recovery. Look after yourself.

seacliff Fri 25-Nov-16 10:15:47

Oh that sounds so frightening, and out of the blue. Glad you are recovering now. OH will be very appreciative of you now.

rosesarered Fri 25-Nov-16 10:12:20

I did think that I hadn't seen you posting for a while PRINTMISS thank goodness that your neighbour did see you in the garden. How very dare they put you in a geriatric ward!grin Glad that you are back home again and on the mend.?

Gagagran Fri 25-Nov-16 10:10:38

I am really sorry to hear of your accident PRINTMISS - it must have been a real ordeal. Maybe you and your other half need a plan for any mishaps in the future?

Hoping you make a speedy recovery and are not in too much pain. Good old St Richard's eh? flowers

Marelli Fri 25-Nov-16 10:05:28

What a nightmare, Printmiss. You must have been so frightened.
Thank goodness someone saw you. Glad to hear you're on the mend now. flowers

DaphneBroon Fri 25-Nov-16 10:01:07

What a terrifying experience PRINTMISS and I am full of admiration that you sound so chipper. One of my fellow grannies (SIL's mum) fell down her stairs in August breaking her leg in two places and was also unable to attract her DH's attention as he was at the other end of the garden and is also quite deaf. Somehow she dragged herself to the phone and dialled 999 for herself. She was in a full leg plaster for weeks and weeks.
It is a lesson, perhaps to have the mobile in the pocket even within the confines of our own house or garden.
I hope you are not in too much pain and that DH can cope so that you do not feel you have to take over again. flowers
(Internet shopping and ready or prepared meals would be my recommendation)

thatbags Fri 25-Nov-16 09:59:01

Oof! What an unpleasant experience, printmiss! I'm glad to hear you had good treatment and are on the mend. Take care, and maybe carry a mobile phone flowers
