Hooray - the Conservatives won the election!

Several people on GN made posts saying something like " Hooray - the Conservatives won the election! "

I'd like to ask if they, or anyone else who agrees with them, have seen the film "I, Daniel Blake" and, if so, have they any comment to make?

People who were not happy when the Conservatives won the election, please do not post on this thread.

That's called mansplaining, grumppa.
I think I know that. However, if you look in any thesaurus you will see that nickname and alias are synonyms. Do you have a thesaurus? I have two. They both have nickname for alias. Even in a dictioary alias means an assumed name. If a nickname isn't an assumed name, I don't know what is.

While reading A Christmas Carol, the Ghost of Christmas Present yesterday with my grandson, we came across at least half a dozen words that meant happy, which is rather surprising considering what many people remember about the story.

Interestingly, my Roget lists nickname under name and alias under misnomer in separate, successively numbered sections.

The point is that just because two words are listed together in a thesaurus, this does not mean that they are synonymous, though of course they may be.

trisher Fri 18-Nov-16 19:26:31

Your Roget is probably newer than mine grumpa, but in the original Penguin (my copy is over 50 years old) both alias and nickname appear under Misnomer. The section before which is Nomenclature contains nickname as well but not alias.

Could you tell me why Brown and Milliband failed to win elections and who the great leader you are waiting for might be?
Unfortunately trisher it sometimes comes down to personality as well as policies. It should not, but it does. Brown did not have the personality nor did Milliband.
However, both were more appealing to many people than Corbyn.

I think the second Messiah great leader has yet to appear because Smith did not have it either.

Jalima Fri 18-Nov-16 19:42:25

I have to say that hiding behind an alias on this website to attack the (twice) elected leader of the party you apparently belong to is not impressive.
Surely everyone has a username on here?
Attacking other politicians, even other posters could therefore be construed as not impressive if an alias is used.

If the new leader of a party moves so far away from what you consider to be the basic tenets and core values of what you believe, or is so ineffectual that you believe that party will never get back into power, then surely you have the right to question it.
Particularly if past leaders of that party and other politicians who are members of that party are in agreement with you and not with the current leader.

The blind following of a leader without any questioning happens in countries such as North Korea. It is good that we live in a democracy where we are able to question and disagree with each other. I hope that we are never in a situation where we cannot question The Supreme Leader and where people who do question are villified (or killed).

I have always said I have much respect for Brown, I have always said he could not 'do' tv, hard to believe but he has a great sense of humour and I have never met snyone move driven to helping children than this man.

Milliband was leader through the unions vote, this angered some and he just didn't have the charm that Cameron had , at times he seemed an innocent .

I think Labour needs Yvette Cooper to heal the party and also to take on some of the Tory MP's

Jalima Fri 18-Nov-16 19:52:24

Yes, I think innocent could be a good name to describe Ed.

I agree about Yvette. Clever, capable and female, not that her sex should make a difference, but the Labour Party has been noticeably lagging behind in that area.

thatbags Fri 18-Nov-16 19:56:06

One doesn't assume a nickname; one is given it. One assumes an alias.

Jalima Fri 18-Nov-16 19:56:38

I would not use my brother's nickname for me on here!

I prefer my username, which is not my alias either.

Anniebach Fri 18-Nov-16 19:58:03

All I have said about the momentum elected militant leader on here I have said openly st meetings , in emails snd in private conversations , I have no reason to hide , I give these reasons when asked to canvas for the party, no matter who asks me to. I have campaigned for many years for town and county councils, bi elections , general elections and the Welsh Assembly, I cannot lie about the leader so will not canvas for votes

durhamjen Fri 18-Nov-16 20:01:41

Because some of us agree with Corbyn does not mean we are blindly following him. We agree with his policies. We are socialists. He is trying to do consensus politics.
We didn't agree with Blair. He wasn't a socialist. He told MPs what they had to do and they did it.

Anniebach Fri 18-Nov-16 20:04:16

Jalima , I agree Yvette's sex should not make a difference but I believe it would, and she wouldn't need a set up like momentum to protect her, neither does she fear questions from the press and does give live interviews on Today

Jalima Fri 18-Nov-16 20:05:42

I know djen but anniebach has been questioned about how she reconciles her membership of the Labour Party with her dislike of Corbyn and her disagreement with and lack of respect for Corbyn.

Ana Fri 18-Nov-16 20:06:24

Well he's not doing a very good job of 'trying to do consensus politics' by putting a lot of people's backs up, quite a lot of them from his own party.

Jalima Fri 18-Nov-16 20:07:35

I suppose they could just carry on letting it leak and fall down and build social housing on there and then sell it off so that people could then sell it for £10 million in a few years.

Good idea?

There has been a lack of planned maintenance and/or the will to fund it. False economy.

Anniebach Fri 18-Nov-16 20:08:37

If Corbyn is trying to do consensus politics why did he need a hit list of MP's who didn't agree with him .

There is socialism and there is militancy , not the same

Ana Fri 18-Nov-16 20:12:58

Consensus politics suggests a strong and broad agreement between the main political parties.

Ha, ha! Yes, I can just see Corbyn and May getting together and agreeing an agenda that suits both of them...hmm (didn't include the LibDems because not really in the running)

trisher Fri 18-Nov-16 20:53:08

We could try talking about policies instead of falling into the carefully set trap that began in the popular press and is continued by some people, who for one reason or another, choose to make it about the personality of one person. The problem is I suspect that actually the policies are the real policies of the Labour party and it is difficult to pick holes in them.
Anniebach do you really think that other party leaders (especially Tony Blair) didn't have lists of MPs who didn't agree with them?

Anniebach Fri 18-Nov-16 21:43:31

Nothing to do with personality , all to do with the fact that without a leader who can win votes across the country talking policies is pointless.

Let's home the homeless - when we win the election

Let's stop these brutal benefit cuts - when we win the election

And trisher I may criticise Corbyn but I don't constantly have digs at certain posters in almost every post

Pity you hadn't said lets talk about policies - without the usual bitchiness attached

Anniebach Fri 18-Nov-16 22:11:09

And trisher,as you believe criticisms of Corbyn by posters is just a continuation of a carefully set trap by newspapers, I think the refusal by Corbyn fans to accept he is less than perfect is caused by too much trawling for and reading of far left bloggers rubbish

durhamjen Fri 18-Nov-16 23:15:16

I read far right rubbish as well, and centre rubbish. However, most of the comments and links I make are usually pertinent to the thread.
Should we not be talking about things like this instead?

www.politics.co.uk/blogs/2016/11/17/rich-right-wingers-are-leading-a-phoney-war-against-the-libe

The left is allowing itself to be split, and in the meantime you can get people like Theresa May drinking wine at £300 a bottle while destroying the welfare state yet saying she stands up for the just managing.

Anniebach Fri 18-Nov-16 23:31:00

Sorry Jen I don't read blogs ,

Yes your links are I am sure pertinent to the thread but I am sure they are not balanced ,May allegedly drank wine £300 a bottle, is her husband wealthy? It's such a weak argument Jen, if she drank cider no difference , it's what she does to help or not that concerns me

Anniebach Fri 18-Nov-16 23:33:05

Needless for me to voice my opinion on the costs for Buck house.

durhamjen Fri 18-Nov-16 23:36:08
