Songs that make the tears flow

Penstemmon,fantastic comment and just in time. I was almost reduced to tears reading all the songs and comments and then you made me laugh. What brilliant timing and so true. I do agree, though, with the OP, there are many songs that bring either sad or happy feelings when you hear them, but very often no memory comes along to explain why.

Like Anniebach "Myfanwy" has me in tears. A song of lost loved ones.

?????? Oh dear, so many of these songs get me blubbing. But Lewlew was the last straw! 'The Old Man'! I remember this playing on the car radio just after my dad died and I wept buckets. It just summed up how I felt about him.

The nice thing about this thread is that lots of different names have felt moved to post. Good to see!

Also Sarah McLachlan - 'Angel' This came on when I was driving home one evening and knew my father did not have long to live. I just had to stop the car - I couldn't see through my tears.

Time to say goodbye also does it for me too - brings back memories of another sad time when I just had my beloved cat Charlie put to sleep.

God Only Knows by the Beach Boys gets me blubbing.

Sometimes, a good greet, for no particular reason, is just what I need to make me feel better. Strange but true.

In 'have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas', the words ' Through the years we all will be together. If the fates allow.' I have sung this in my choir concert almost every Christmas for a number of years, and these words choke me.
Also the soundtrack of the film, Cinema Paradiso.

At DS's recent wedding we were all delighted at the surprise appearance during the reception of a full pipe band.
When they started Highland Cathedral I was so overcome that I had to move indoors and remember Mum's funeral.
DD plans to have it at her wedding so I need to get a grip and cope!
Fields of Gold was recorded by 15 yr-old GD of a friend and played at the funeral. She knew she wouldn't manage to sing without breaking down so the recording was the answer.

Just came back to this post , reading through so many lovely choices. I hadn't even thought of Christmas music yesterday, but oh yes " Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas", "I'm Dreaming of a White Christmas" , purely sentimental but in the right setting those words get to me.
Also Danny Boy for my Mum.
It's got me thinking about funeral songs which I'm sure was not the initial intention!
Sometimes these songs that make us cry aren't so much sad as nostalgic or memories.
I think my choices are mainly based on the words in the songs.

`When I was sweet sixteen` by the Furies always gets to me, my Gran used to sing it to me as a child .

I'll take you home again Kathleen......my lovely mum was called Kathleen and was born in Ireland. Always brings a tear to my eye.
