In my next life......

It drives my husband nuts when I say anything beginning with the line "in my next life, I will......"

Following a discussion on the radio about visiting Nashville I (innocently) said "Oh I would love to visit Nashville... maybe in my next life.." and I hadn't even finished my sentence when he threw a proper, man-strop !

I can't see the problem. I know there are certain things I will never see or do in this life so what's the harm in hoping I might do it in the next?

this has made me laugh - don't we all say things that drive our OH crazy & them us, gillybob & Juggernaut brilliant. grin

I too look back on my life & think if I hadn't.... but then I wouldn't have DD, her OH & my DGS - no regrets just an interesting life lived with many twists & turns, smile

In my next life I am coming back as a flying elephant with the trots...........

gillybob Wed 21-Sept-16 12:21:14

Yes I think we probably do legs55 smile

There's really no point regretting what you haven't done is there?

We are each responsible for our own destiny........

and all that other blah, blah, blah crap that you read in self help books.

Some years ago I had a major abdominal operation which saved my life but left me looking pretty lumpy. When I asked the surgeon when I would be likely to see my waistline return he said "in the next life!"

Saying, ' In my next life...' draws attention to the idea that your present life will ultimately come to an end. Maybe that's what your husband dislikes. He might not like to have the fact of your and his inevitable mortality referred to all the time.

I am with those who think we all say things which irritate our nearest and dearest. I get irritated when DH says 'probably' when 'possibly' would be appropriate because it is always about something negative which possibly could happen. He get irritated when I remind him (rightly of course!) that I am always right.grin

maybe he has realised that you are both getting older and it scares him, so everytime you say "in mynext life......." he thinks about losing you

I have always said I would like to come back as a pet cat. Nothing to do but find a sunny spot and sleep until the next meal is provided.

Gillybob Start a bucket list on Pinterest. i keep a bucket list board and also pink fluffy ball gowns board and a tiara board for when DGD is having a fluffy pink day.

gillybob Wed 21-Sept-16 23:11:44

I can't see it tbh lostmyglassesxx way out of my league (financially) and no point in going if you can't do anything once your there.

My "in my next life" list is my bucket list Stansgran except for maybe I get to do them after the proverbial bucket has been kicked.

If my DH says "We'll see.", he means "No." and that annoys me.

I think we all say things which irritate your other halves, as they do and drive us nuts in the process! I personally think it is probably more about the repetition of the phrase rather than the content. My husband is well known for saying "the fact is..." when he is going to give a long opinion on something. I dont know if the phrase drives me mad, or the fact that it is a warning of what is to come!!!

He has other marvellous qualities, so I think I will keep him and just find something to do upstairs when he starts one of those grin

The big things maybe never possible but theres nothing to stop small dreams coming true but you have to look at whats do able. This year Ive driven a tank cos I wanted to have a go...family all clubbed together for voucher..Somethings don't cost much..wading in a stream at soon to be 60 great fun, making reed boats and sailing them. There is stuff out there without expressing undoable wishes which can harbour resentment at life's lot.

gillybob Thu 22-Sept-16 08:44:41

I agree that there are small delights to be had everyday Pattyann57 and I do splash in streams, play pooh sticks, walk on the beach etc. They are enjoyable especially when shared with DH or DGC but they are not "visiting Nashville" which is my dream. I know this will probably never happen so what's the harm
In wishing ?

dramatictessa Thu 22-Sept-16 09:41:22

Keep on wishing, and doing, gillybob. They both make this life more funsmile

When a couple has been married/partnered for a long time, there are bound to be things that irk, but mostly we are too polite to mention it!

What kind of things does he say when he's "going off on one" ?!! That might give you a clue as to why he's cross!wink

I get on my husband nerves when someone else tells him something and I say ' oh yes I forgot to tell you that ' I really think in my head I have told him. He gets on my nerves by being relentlessly cheerful in the morning and talking to me before I have had my coffee and looked at GN.

lefthanded Thu 22-Sept-16 18:26:52

My wife is disabled and relies on me to fetch-and-carry for her. I don't mind doing that, but it does annoy me when she says things like "I could do with my blue cardigan from the bedroom but you don't want to go upstairs again". Part of me wants to say "Don't I? Oh I didn't realise. GOOD THING YOU KNOW WHAT I WANT BETTER THAN I DO".

If you want something, ask me and I will get it. Or if I am too busy I will say, "I'm busy - I'll get it when I have finished". But please don't presume that you know what I want.

gillybob Thu 22-Sept-16 18:46:49

Oh lefthanded did you get slapped for that at school? I can hear myself in your wife! She wants the cardi but feels guilty for putting you out and almost tells you that you don't want to do it before you have had chance to respond. Please don't be angry . She sounds like a lovely, caring wife . smile

lefthanded Fri 23-Sept-16 09:47:53

(Apology: slightly O/T). I was never chastised for my lefthandedness gillybob, but in school in the 1950s I did have one teacher (an evil-looking woman in "devil's eyebrow" glasses) who taught the entire class that "your RIGHT hand is the hand that you WRITE with". To her, the lefthanders were just collateral damage - and I still get left and right confused now, 60 years on.

I remember my father (another southpaw who HAD been forced to change his writing hand in his schooldays) going to my school to complain about it. But I don't recall it having any effect.
