I'm a pronunciation snob. Actually, no, I'm a stickler for articulation. I love hearing different regional accents, but I also like clear speech, speech with well articulated words whatever the underlying accent is. Is it just me or is there an increasing tendency for sloppy speech full of glottal stops where there used to be lovely sharp Ts?
When I read this morning that Angela Rayner, shadow education secretary, said that Theresa May's grammar school proposals, if implemented, would be "de'rimen'al", I cringed. My cringing was not about the effect of more grammar schools, which is a separate issue from what I'm talking about here, but the abuse of the word detrimental.
My hearing is very good (as yet) but I find it takes longer for me to understand sloppily pronounced words. Perhaps it's because too much of my brain is having to translate unfamiliar words into forms that have, to me, greater clarity.
