I loved Amsterdam, too. We stayed in the Jordaan in a typical Dutch canal house as my future DIL was working there. I only lived in fear of stepping outside the door and being run over by a thousand bicycles!

Rome + Amalfi Coast, Athens, Madrid, Valencia (Barcelona was OK), Paris, Edinburgh, London, Stavanger in Norway, Berlin (before unification was fascinating, both sides), Munich, Zurich and...

I absolutely loved Vienna and visited in the 1980s when still single. I went to the Stadtpark and they had a Strauss-like orchestra playing waltzes in the bandstand. I was seated next to some young men at the terrace cafe, and was asked to dance many times. Thank goodness for childhood ballroom lessons in the 1960s!

Also the Schoenbrunn Palace (very much like Blenheim), outside of city, was great. The Hapsburg one in the centre was good but not as grand. Oh, and the pastries, konditorei, sacher torte. Yum! Then I went on to Salzburg, more touristy but still nice with dramatic scenery.

Back in the US, Boston is my favourite big city, but am very partial to the Maine coast.

I lived in Amsterdam very many years ago, and it is still very special for me. However, Istanbul (such a wonderful maritime city), Seville (with its beautiful Alcazar), Venice, Paris, Berlin (constantly changing), Marrakech and Fez (watching really skilful craftsmen working with their basic tools and materials to produce stunning designs), and not forgetting my native London!

I had a lovely ice cream sundae at Schonbrunn. The view is very nice.

I did like the old big wheel at the Prater. Very Third Man.

I love Copenhagen and can find (almost) anywhere I want to there, and used to cycle around endlessly while the husband was working. Weirdly I wouldn't contemplate cycling in Amsterdam!

Second best city in the world for me must be Sydney ... absolutely perfect and thinking about it now makes me want to go back.

I love Lisbon (OK family is there but it's a gorgeous city!). Boat trip on the river is a must! jinglbellsfrocks - hope you enjoy Manchester. I love the Christmas markets there, but can get very crowded, especially at weekends. If you can get to Salford Quays I'd recommend it in a flash! That's my favourite place for shopping, theatre and food.

Moving over to the Western Hemisphere! I'm currently in Boston, MA, having been visiting family in Toronto. Both busy vibrant cities in very different ways. Off now to Atlanta, Georgia and then Savannah and Charlestown. I'll need to report back on those.

I've been to a number of cities that I loved but Rome was always my favourite, that is, until I went to Istanbul, without a doubt my favourite city now.

Rome's the favourite for me! Also Montreal and London too.

I love cities too, London, New York and Manchester.

Savannah is a bit special. The beautiful squares and houses nearly disappeared in the 50s at the hands of developers but most were rescued and preserved thanks to the efforts of a small group of people who managed to prevent it.

Agree about Valencia (DS and DGS's live there). San Francisco, Sydney, Auckland and Vancouver are all places I think I could live. I shall endeavour to visit places nearer to home when I can no longer do long haul !

Paris and Rome but we've just had an amazing weekend in Seville which I highly recommend.

Sydney would top my list for just astonishing natural beauty. Córdoba is excellent, far better than Granada or Seville.

What about the lovely little city of Wells no one has mentioned?

Other than that - Florence, Amsterdam, Milan, Edinburgh, York, Chester, Quebec, Paris, Budapest and so many others.

I really loved Bruges and Prague. Nearer to home Leeds, York and my home town - London!!

Thank you jinglbellsfrocks, as I have a brother who now lives not far from Valencia,who wants me over, but first I was thinking of replacing my highlights of 1966 when I was in Jijona, San Juan etc.

Was just about to log in to say no-one has mentioned Prague! It is a beautiful city and I have family living there, so no question it is my favourite. Everyone I speak to who has visited tells me they loved it too.

I like all cities for a visit but recently visited Porto - it is beautiful

Paris! However, any city with mountains and water....Vancouver, Sydney, Cape Town, San Francisco. And the energy of New York City is awesome.

Visited Rome and Paris love them both. Would like to go to Barcelona and Madrid

Do love going to London though only takes 20 minutes on the train from where I live.

Oh, I love a city break! My favourite still is, and probably always will be, London, because it just has so much going on, so much history, and so many fascinating areas, each with its own character. Then New York, Paris, Hamburg, Florence, Cambridge, though I loved lots of those already mentioned. The ones that disappointed were Los Angeles (no character), Budapest (everyone seemed to be out to overcharge us) and Vienna (because I expected too much).

It looks as though I really need to go to Seville though...
