What do you regret that you can't do any more?

My friend's mother died recently, and she asked me if I would sing at the funeral. I did have a wee practice , but a combination of age and illness meant I wasn't confident I could come up with the goods.

Skipping with a rope. By myself or with a bunch of people and a long rope.
It took me ages to learn how to jump in from the wrong side!

There are so many things. Running, God when was the last time? Walking - a combination of arthritic knees and painful feet makes it so hard to walk for long. Getting down on the floor - with the kids, or to look for something I've dropped. OK, I can still get down, but what I miss is being able easily to get up again.
But the thing I really, really miss, above all else, is having a long soak in the bath. Simply because once I'm in, I really can't get out again. I have to roll over onto all fours somehow and lever myself up from that position The last time I had a bath was about 3 years ago when I thought, dammit I'm going to do it! And when it came to getting out I found there simply wasn't enough room to roll over. I managed somehow but it was difficult and very painful!

Sleep in,
get pissed drunk ( I'd recover in a few hours, now it's days)
shop for hours.

I had no idea whether I could get out of a bath or not, indinana until we went away recently and in our hotel room was a beautiful double ended bath. We have never used the bath we have in our house, preferring showers, but you have to give it a go don't you? Himself at one end, and me at the other, hot water, scented oils, candles.... We both fell asleep! Then it was him who couldn't get out, not me! "I won't be b***dy trying that again!" he said. Ah well......[sigh].

Indinana Fri 15-Jul-16 20:37:15

Greyduster grin. Would have been a very different tale 40 years ago - and one you wouldn't be sharing on any online forum wink

Indinana Fri 15-Jul-16 20:40:03

Not that there were any online fora 40 years ago of course....

Greyduster Fri 15-Jul-16 21:21:33

Thank God for that!! ?

Jane10 Fri 15-Jul-16 21:40:51

Indinana said it all for me. Wonder how she knows? I just think my batteries are running low sad

JessM Fri 15-Jul-16 21:46:54

Sleep all through the night.

Deedaa Fri 15-Jul-16 21:52:09

Running, jumping and wearing heels I think.

I regret not being able to remember what I regret, and not continuing with ballroom dancing when I was 17.

Not seeing clearly. Not being able to walk up our beautiful mountains. Not wading through the river with my dog. Not camping. Not having sex , I miss the comfort of arms

Jogging. I could never go very fast, but I could keep going for several miles. After operations on both feet, leading to ligament problems, and then a period of AF, I've lost all the fitness that I had. Walking is boring and doesn't give the same buzz and ability to lose yourself in the activity.

being able to spring down from my horse instead of slithering off the saddle like a bag of wet cement.

I can add sleeping to the list now, because of the pain caused by my fall today. The knee is one thing, just badly scraped and scabbing and stiffening up nicely. But I should probably stop pretending the right wrist is feeling better, and perhaps resign myself to the prospect of a boring morning in A & E tomorrow. sad

WilmaKnickersfit Sat 16-Jul-16 01:56:15

Maggie it did sound like a nasty fall. Maybe best to get your wrist checked out. Is it swollen? flowers

Maggiemaybe Sat 16-Jul-16 07:37:38

The side of my hand is, slightly. It feels okay after a few hours sleep, but I'm loath to use it as it was so very painful last night. I have a monster truck arena cake to decorate for DGS2's birthday party today, so will probably direct DH how to do it - oh heck shock. I'll sign off now as I can only type (gingerly) with my right hand. Thanks for your concern, Wilma. smile

grannyqueenie Sat 16-Jul-16 08:47:09

Seriously Maggie wearing those sandals (at your age!!!)....what were you thinking!!! grin We never learn! I tripped over a few months ago and broke a bone in my hand. It made me feel old and decrepit...which of course I am most definitely NOT!
Do hope you feel better today and get a chance to have your hand checked out. Good luck with directing that cake icing, I think something like that would push me and my old boy to the brink!

walk more than 50 yards quickly - it's more a stagger these days even with a walking stick.
run - can't remember the last time i ran.
kneel down - or get up off the floor [or even get down on to the floor]. artificial knee and arthritis in the other has stopped that.
couldn't go hill walking or rambling anywhere - not unless i can find a motablity scooter which could take me!
stairs i can cope with - slowly. the days of jumping two stairs at a time have gone ......... long gone!
i've found the more you can't do the more you find that you need to do ........ i can't paint skirting boards any more as i can't get down on the floor], gardening is a chore as, again, i can't get down or even use one of those kneeler things.
oh for a fit male someone to garden and decorate for me ......... for free of course as the budget probably wouldn't stretch to payment!

Ice skate. As a teenager I was brilliant, but then they closed our rink down. Since then I've always taken the chance to skate if I'm somewhere that has a rink. Now at nearly 64 I've lost my nerve. I was on a cruise a few years ago with an ice rink and couldn't pluck up the courage to skate. I have sore knees now. A bit sad really.

Granny2 Sat 16-Jul-16 10:33:12

Almost everything. What I can do takes so much longer. One thing I can do is smile that doesn't take long.?

GrannyMosh Sat 16-Jul-16 10:33:39

I suffer with fibromyalgia, so there are many things I can no longer do, but what I REALLY miss is being able to climb the ladder into my loft. I haven't been up there for about 5 years now, and am in the process of packing up to go and live in Germany with my family, so am looking forward to getting some younger, fitter friends to bring down my hoard of treasures. I foresee lots of ooohs, aaaahs, and 'can't bear to part with this'-es!

KatyK Sat 16-Jul-16 10:38:13

At almost 67, there is not much (physically)I can't do that I have always done. I can run for the bus, run upstairs etc. However, I can't fit into some of my clothes, wear nice shoes (bunions), have my hair done (it fell out sad, feel carefree - I have become a terrible worrier. I am grateful for my (so far) good health though.
