What do you regret that you can't do any more?

My friend's mother died recently, and she asked me if I would sing at the funeral. I did have a wee practice , but a combination of age and illness meant I wasn't confident I could come up with the goods.

I really can't run anymore. Tried to run with the dog and managed about 6 steps before I was out of breath and my legs had to stop.

I have such a long list , I won't bore you with it. Hopefully after my hip op I shall be able to at least sit down in comfort!!!

Hip op sounds cool if I drop the aitch!.

There isn't much that I could do then that I can't do now –whether pirouettes or handstands, cook a meal for fifty people or write a book. I don't sing any more – except for my one-year-old grandson when we row the boat and chant about the wheels on the bus as I change his nappy – as the gin-soaked vocal chords can't hold the notes any more. However, the last time a man under thirty-five chatted me up rather than just chatted was probably about five or six years ago – but I wasn't trying then and I'm certainly not trying now! Moreover, I have recently learned to do some things that I can do now that I couldn't do then.

Dodderer!

Bennan Sat 16-Jul-16 20:01:59

I can't dance since I had both hips done - I used to love dancing with DH - great fun. Can't sleep without pain, only ever shower and ache all over after any exercise. Still, life is not too bad and still do as much as I can although I do feel a bit of a dodder ear at times! smile

Make decisions without agonising!

Bluecat Sat 16-Jul-16 17:53:39

Getting out of a low chair, or up off the floor.
Kneeling - agony for the poor knees.
Baths - has to be showers now.
Reading without glasses.

My old schoolfriend, who is 63 like me, still goes on walking holidays and my cousin, who is 75, manages really challenging hikes, so God knows why I'm so feeble. On the other hand, neither of them has arthritis like me. Maybe, one day, I'll get artificial knees and a new spring in my step...

lizzypopbottle Sat 16-Jul-16 17:40:13

I can't do fine hand sewing or embroidery any more. Can't do knitting either. Scissors are becoming a bit awkward too. I have arthritis in both thumbs so gripping something very small, like a sewing needle, is tricky.

Wearing high heels - so glamorous - I used to wear them all the time but now I'm afraid of falling; lifting my grandchildren, hearing well without hearing aids, reading without glasses. It's not great growing old, but better than the alternative!

Dying my hair auburn, I used to love it and it looked natural as I had right skin colouring, don't suit it now and white roots come in too quick.

So many things especially the gardening. Latest thing is the ability to stay awake during a TV programme or reading a book.

grandMattie Sat 16-Jul-16 15:36:30

Bend! grin

Stansgran Sat 16-Jul-16 13:44:24

I have such vile feelings towards people who run past me down the stairs in M&S . Seriously.

pollyperkins Sat 16-Jul-16 13:41:19

Ooh Cherry tree I do that- seem to groan loudly when stNding up from chair. Didnt know I did it till someone (youger) laughed and imitated me!

Zena510 Sat 16-Jul-16 12:01:07

Being as supple as I used to be/ kneeling easily.
After three major ops seems things have taken toll.
Stretching exercises help and strengthen though ☺️

2old4hotpants Sat 16-Jul-16 11:10:26

Stand on my head. Not even sure I can't do it anymore, but I'm too scared to try.

I can't attract wolf whistles like I used to, I think that is a hate crime in itself......how dare they stop just because I doubled in size and got old. Cunning linking of two threads here.

There are other things of course due to spinal injury, fibro and arthritis so my advice is do everything you can, while you can......

Reading without glasses would be a luxury, being pain free would be a miracle....just being able to make an arrangement to do something and having confidence that I will indeed be there on the day.

What goes with age is sometimes physical confidence..........and suddenly you realise how your own shrunken life is all you have left.

I may download some wolf whistles just for home use.

I do the exercise where you get out of a chair or sofa with out holding on the sides. One of the things I was told to do when I broke my hip. I also like to walk.

KatyK Sat 16-Jul-16 10:38:13

At almost 67, there is not much (physically)I can't do that I have always done. I can run for the bus, run upstairs etc. However, I can't fit into some of my clothes, wear nice shoes (bunions), have my hair done (it fell out sad, feel carefree - I have become a terrible worrier. I am grateful for my (so far) good health though.

GrannyMosh Sat 16-Jul-16 10:33:39

I suffer with fibromyalgia, so there are many things I can no longer do, but what I REALLY miss is being able to climb the ladder into my loft. I haven't been up there for about 5 years now, and am in the process of packing up to go and live in Germany with my family, so am looking forward to getting some younger, fitter friends to bring down my hoard of treasures. I foresee lots of ooohs, aaaahs, and 'can't bear to part with this'-es!

Granny2 Sat 16-Jul-16 10:33:12

Almost everything. What I can do takes so much longer. One thing I can do is smile that doesn't take long.?

inishowen Sat 16-Jul-16 10:10:11

Ice skate. As a teenager I was brilliant, but then they closed our rink down. Since then I've always taken the chance to skate if I'm somewhere that has a rink. Now at nearly 64 I've lost my nerve. I was on a cruise a few years ago with an ice rink and couldn't pluck up the courage to skate. I have sore knees now. A bit sad really.

Lupatria Sat 16-Jul-16 10:00:27

walk more than 50 yards quickly - it's more a stagger these days even with a walking stick.
run - can't remember the last time i ran.
kneel down - or get up off the floor [or even get down on to the floor]. artificial knee and arthritis in the other has stopped that.
couldn't go hill walking or rambling anywhere - not unless i can find a motablity scooter which could take me!
stairs i can cope with - slowly. the days of jumping two stairs at a time have gone ......... long gone!
i've found the more you can't do the more you find that you need to do ........ i can't paint skirting boards any more as i can't get down on the floor], gardening is a chore as, again, i can't get down or even use one of those kneeler things.
oh for a fit male someone to garden and decorate for me ......... for free of course as the budget probably wouldn't stretch to payment!

grannyqueenie Sat 16-Jul-16 08:47:09

Seriously Maggie wearing those sandals (at your age!!!)....what were you thinking!!! grin We never learn! I tripped over a few months ago and broke a bone in my hand. It made me feel old and decrepit...which of course I am most definitely NOT!
Do hope you feel better today and get a chance to have your hand checked out. Good luck with directing that cake icing, I think something like that would push me and my old boy to the brink!

Maggiemaybe Sat 16-Jul-16 07:37:38

The side of my hand is, slightly. It feels okay after a few hours sleep, but I'm loath to use it as it was so very painful last night. I have a monster truck arena cake to decorate for DGS2's birthday party today, so will probably direct DH how to do it - oh heck shock. I'll sign off now as I can only type (gingerly) with my right hand. Thanks for your concern, Wilma. smile
