I have just been listening to the fall-out debates from the referendum and was struck once more with how I struggled to really get my head round the economic debate going on - and economics formed part of my degree (a long time ago!) so theoretically I should be at an advantage. It did not feel like it.
It occurred to me that, rather than learning about split digraphs, maybe children in school should all follow economics courses as basic education alongside English and Maths. This could start at the top end of primary school and continue as a basic subject in which we all need to be literate in order to be part of the democratic process.
I also think that politics - in the sense of how a democracy works - should be a basic part of the curriculum.
The new curriculum fills children's heads with things they do not need to know - with the serious result of putting many children off education, particularly those who are late starters. And yet these two basic aspects of learning to function in the adult world are missing.
Good Morning Tuesday 4th August 2026
"Old fashioned" expressions that young people have never heard.

Don't think it entered our DS's head either.
