'Like' button

Is there a 'like' button on Gransnet as there is on Facebook? When I read some of the comments that make me smile I want to 'like' them instead of writing a reply
.

"smile Anya Tue 21-Jun-16 06:47:30

Easy if you use copy/paste"

Yes, that kind of works, but when people reading the thread come across such a post, they then have to scroll back through the thread (and it might be a long way back) just to see what you are referring to. Even the poster him/herself that you are posting a smiley to may not be sure which exact post you're referencing without scrolling back and checking. A like button on the post itself would keep everything in context.

Exactly Indiana And there's nothing unpleasant about it, is there, so it might make the site a happier place.

GandTea Tue 21-Jun-16 11:01:32

A "like" button would be the best option, but we are unlikely to get one.

Indinana Tue 21-Jun-16 11:17:17

Is it because it's a technically challenging feature to introduce? Or is it because GNHQ are just plain stubborn and refuse to give their members what they want? <runs and hides>

Indinana Tue 21-Jun-16 11:17:50

I wonder if GNHQ would let us have a referendum on this? grin

Lona Tue 21-Jun-16 11:40:11

Please noooooo. grin

Greyduster Tue 21-Jun-16 12:07:39

It can't be that technically challenging - we have one on our fishing forum! grin

GandTea Tue 21-Jun-16 12:20:49

Ah, but given your fishing attire, that must be a very posh site.

Anya Tue 21-Jun-16 12:36:07

grin

Greyduster Tue 21-Jun-16 12:58:10

Yes, we're all kitted out at Farlows of Pall Mall, fish the River Test and have plums in our mouths don't yer know! (Now that would definitely get me several 'likes' from the fly fishing plumbers, bakers, engineers, retired steel workers, university lecturers and other hoi polloi who make up our esteemed numbers!).

GandTea Tue 21-Jun-16 13:00:43

We must have bumped into each other in Farlows, often in there.

jinglbellsfrocks Tue 21-Jun-16 13:23:41

A like button would encourage cliqueyness.

ninathenana Tue 21-Jun-16 13:32:45

Farnorth I don't understand the need to know how many 'likes' a person has for their post. Or see why it would be confusing to have several smileys. Surely the number of likes only concerns the person receiving them. Unless you feel that people would be persuaded by the number of "likes' for a certain post.
smile Farnorth

jinglbellsfrocks Tue 21-Jun-16 13:35:20

It would cause so much trouble!

What's wrong with "I agree with (blah - poster's name?)

jinglbellsfrocks Tue 21-Jun-16 13:37:24

Anya - " especially with the way GN is headed...".

Don't understand that bit.

CariGransnet (GNHQ) Tue 21-Jun-16 14:01:11

Anya

I wish I could use that too, though I can if I go on my PC. Can't seem to have the choice on my mobile.

You can! Scroll down to the very bottom and you will see a link for the desktop site. It's obviously not configured for mobile as well as the mobile site but it works well if you prefer the format

Anya Tue 21-Jun-16 14:14:56

Thanks Cari will try that...I'm on the PC now so all OK.

Sorry you don't understand jingl

Re the 'cliqueyness' (is that an actual word?) that already exists, but there are those who dare not venture an opinion very often who might just want to add some little something to the thread. As these are people who rarely, if ever, post anyway they can't be accused of 'cliqueyness' Q.E.D.

jinglbellsfrocks Tue 21-Jun-16 14:19:13

Why can't they try to develop a slightly thicker skin, stick their heads above the parapet, and say what they think? Thus making Gransnet a much more interesting place to be.

And yes, it is a word. A perfectly good one. Even if it was invented by me.

jinglbellsfrocks Tue 21-Jun-16 14:19:57

I will just google Q.E.D. Never did work that one out.

jinglbellsfrocks Tue 21-Jun-16 14:21:48

"which was to be demonstrated".

None the wiser. smile

Indinana Tue 21-Jun-16 14:36:00

Quod erat demonstrandum. Meaning that which was proven/ demonstrated'. In other words, 'I have just shown you the proof of what I was saying'. Or something like that grin

Anya Tue 21-Jun-16 14:53:35

Just 'cos you're a brave and fearless poster * jingl* and don't mind a bit of bovver it doesn't mean that others are as bold and courageous as you and I wink

FarNorth Tue 21-Jun-16 15:15:37

I don't have any need to know how many 'likes' a post might have, ninathenana. But 'likes' would be more succinct than having smiley posts scattered throughout the thread. Luckily people don't do that, tho.

I do think an 'edit' option would be nice and would have thought a classy site like GN would have that. Although posters could make more use of the 'Preview Message' option before whacking 'Post'.
smile to all.

Anya Tue 21-Jun-16 16:23:28

Hey Cari I'm back from school run and while the GC are watching rubbish on TV otherwise occupied I'm on my iPad and found your 'desktop site' and it works grin

Thanks.

pollyperkins Tue 21-Jun-16 16:36:26

As I understand it, on FB if someone posts a message about being ill or sad or something awful has happened then a like button is not appropriate, and a dislike can be used then. But I agree it's open to misinterpretation and on this site could be taken to mean criticism!
