Bed dilema

Our bedroom is due for a redo and I am wondering what to do.

We have a double bed. As we've got older, neither of us sleep as well as we did. DH used to get in bed fall asleep fast (still does) and barely moved till he got up next day. Now he shifts about and disturbs me and to be fair I probably disturbs him to.

We have two spare bedrooms each with a single bed which the GC use when they visit and in some ways it seems a waste buying yet another two single beds in place of the double when we already have those. I do go and decamp in one of the rooms if I can't sleep.

I did think maybe of one of those beds that has individual mattresses but sort of joined in some way. Does anyone on here have one and what is their opinion.

Be pleased to hear what others have done.

Hi Grannyknot,I am needing a new bed, can you tell me the make....is it a latex mattress? Sounds great. Thanks

Seriously considering getting two singles pushed (zipped) together, we had them on holiday last year and it really was so much better. My DH is a night owl and I am the opposite,he also snores and grinds his teeth -God help me ! Trouble is we would have to remove our fitted wardrobes as our 5ft double fits between them with no spare space. After a very stressful kitchen extension I think I may continue to decamp to the spare room as required for a while .

We have a king-size bed. DH needs a bit of extra room when his leg gets uncomfortable in the night. I wouldn't want to go to single beds. There's nothing like being able to stretch out your hand and feel a warm, living, breathing body beside you in the night.

We always had two 3 foot beds, pushed together at first, then zip linked when they came in. We also always used single top bedding, blankets then duvets, but use a super king size sheet on the bottom. It saves a lot of "waves" whenever the other turns over and you keep all your own covers. Also recently I've put a mattress topper on which eliminates the slight lump down the middle.
Though now alone I still sleep in my side. The grandchildren love to sleep in this huge bed with me when they come and there has been as many as 4 plus me on some nights!
I buy my super king size sheets at Dunelm Mills, good choice and good prices.

Two double beds in two separate rooms lead to a very good night's sleep!

Grannytuna Sun 13-Mar-16 10:14:15

We've had separate bedrooms since we set out on our joint adventure 24 years ago, as Mr Tuna snores. It's never made any difference to us, we still get together and also enjoy our space. He stays up late, I don't. We think it's ideal and it works well with a double bed in each room. Sometimes in hotels or staying with friends we have twin beds, but can share a double which is fine for the odd occasion, but we both generate a lot of heat at night! But for us, separate rooms is the way to go!

Craftycat Sun 13-Mar-16 10:27:25

We have a very big double bed that actually has 2 separate mattresses. It is one of these ones that has an electronic thingy that means you can raise the mattress up at the top so you can sit up & read & also the legs go up sort of under the knees. Really comfortable for reading in bed or drinking tea etc. Obviously if it was one mattress you would both have to be in same position so it has 2 controllers working one mattress each.
It is the most comfortable bed we have ever had & we both sleep better as one turning over doesn't disturb the other but you can still cuddle in the middle!
Good news is that we have single duvets etc. now too so no-one gets covers pulled off in the night.
Even better is it was a real steal on last day of sale in Dreams about 8 years ago. We love it. Best thing we ever bought.

My husband and I are sleeping in separate rooms but not by choice. He is sleeping in the living room on the floor propped up against the sofa. This is because he struggles to breath after a while. I have our king sized bed to myself which can be lonely and chilly. I used to keep warm off him because he is like a human radiator!

nanaGill Sun 13-Mar-16 10:53:06

I also prefer the double beds in separate bedrooms. My late husband used to snore, and my fidgeting kept waking him up. So a cuddle at night and in the morning but sleep in separate rooms suited us both. I miss crawling into bed with him in the mornings :-(

Super King sleigh bed with sprung mattress and topper from JL (own make). Wonderful. Get the bedding from JL, Stowes, Homesense, Debenhams.

I have just discovered many wonderful vintage linen sheets in French markets. They are usually in perfect condition with gorgeous embroidery and very big. I have dyed a couple and am going to make fitted bottom sheets from others, I can just about do that they are so large, and will make some pillowcases too. I have never seen them at more than €35. Online linen sheets are only found in Italy, or Italian in UK and start at £300.

Worth a day trip to France?

This thread is hilarious! One sleeping lower than the other, waves, trampolines ... husband is heavier than me so it would leave me clinging to "higher ground". All that has stopped now.

Thanks cari - I never think of the obvious! Also I don't have either of those shops near me. Thanks to other posters who replied too.

Will check out the label soon deaneke and let you know.

Grannyknot Sun 13-Mar-16 11:11:10

Here you go, hope it's clear.

I've since discovered that these mattresses are popular for use in loft conversions, because as I said, they arrive in a neat roll.

You don't turn it, by the way (something to do with the layers/construction), but you do spin it through 360 degrees.

I agree with separate rooms, my husband has also got worse for age, snoring, fidgeting etc, he also likes to watch TV late into the night, so much better if I have my sanctuary, .he usually comes in with a lovely cup of tea for a cuddle in the morning and this suits us fine.

Indigogaga1 Sun 13-Mar-16 12:50:18

We recently bought a Super King bed from John Lewis in the sale. It is 2 singles zipped together. Absolutely brilliant, we have never slept so well. Only 1 problem - finding an quilt and cover that is one size larger. Can't quite work out how 2 quilts work. SK fitted sheet from JL.

Galen Sun 13-Mar-16 13:10:53

Jl sell the emperor size quilts covers and sheets

If you have spare bedrooms, then make one of them your own.

Don't see the sense of putting up with someone , or something that keeps you awake at night.

Bez1989 Sun 13-Mar-16 14:55:39

We have seperate bedrooms.
We each have an electic adjustable bed...
4 foot wide. We bought them from a local.
Mobility Shop. They let us try them out in their showroom so no commission pushy salesman involved !! They came and set them up for us. So now I can sit up iñ bed in comfort for as long as I like listening to
my audio book being read to me.
If my legs need to be elevated thats done too by the press of a button. Can thoroughly recommend them.
We can keep in touch by my mobile and he has the landlone phone. Perfect arrangemt for us oldies. smile

There is no evidence that having your own bedroom is the end of a marriage. The Aristocracy have always done it. it was the poor who could not afford two beds where all piled in together.

Mostly its the snoring that starts the wives off wanting to have good night's sleep in their own room. Some even take sleeping pills because Hubby snores. I say go for it properly. move into the nicest of the single rooms and make it your own. Marriages last so long these days its being sensible after all.

Granny23 Sun 13-Mar-16 16:00:34

Yes Margaret The luxury of a spare room is still denied to the poor. Now they call it the Bedroom Tax.

tinkerbelle Sun 13-Mar-16 16:10:19

I miss the cuddles when I de-camp into single bed. The snoring can be a problem though - his not mine!! At moment wouldn't want to regularly sleep separately but we are only young at 68 yrs - who knows may change my mind in 20 years time!

EllenT Sun 13-Mar-16 16:19:23

Soakandsleep.com have a wide range of superking bedding - and frequent offers. Good quality and value.

Conni7 Sun 13-Mar-16 16:33:13

We have had a 6 ft zipped-up bed for 12 years now, and I can recommend it. I have unzipped the mattresses, but not the frame, as it is easier to turn one at a time. The only disadvantage is that if you are on your own at any time you can't sleep in the middle because of the ridge.

Willow500 Sun 13-Mar-16 18:02:14

We're only 62 and have been in separate rooms about 20 years now. He snored badly so moved out to the other bedroom so we both got a better night's sleep however it was discovered he has sleep apnea about 7 years ago so now has a c-pap machine which blows air into his nose all night - it makes a noise and would keep me awake so we just stay in our own rooms. He told me this week that he can use it like a snorkel and pull the duvet right over his head to keep the light out when he has a lie in grin

Teetime Sun 13-Mar-16 18:09:00

Keys of Clacton used to do all shapes and sizes of bed linen

NemosMum Sun 13-Mar-16 18:23:29

Widowed now, but we got an IKEA super kingsize bed frame in which fit 2 single mattresses. No need to zip them together. We used single sheets & duvets, and were thus able to accommodate different temperature requirements. I put a kingsize cotton counterpane over the top, so looks good. Would recommend: loads of room to stretch out, and you can easily reach over and have a cuddly. Only thing is .... it feels quite lonely on your own sad.
