Bed dilema

Our bedroom is due for a redo and I am wondering what to do.

We have a double bed. As we've got older, neither of us sleep as well as we did. DH used to get in bed fall asleep fast (still does) and barely moved till he got up next day. Now he shifts about and disturbs me and to be fair I probably disturbs him to.

We have two spare bedrooms each with a single bed which the GC use when they visit and in some ways it seems a waste buying yet another two single beds in place of the double when we already have those. I do go and decamp in one of the rooms if I can't sleep.

I did think maybe of one of those beds that has individual mattresses but sort of joined in some way. Does anyone on here have one and what is their opinion.

Be pleased to hear what others have done.

Separate beds here. I kicked OH out years ago because of his habit of going to bed very late and them climbing into bed freezing cold at 4am. he probably snores much more than he used to as well.

I do get a better nights sleep as I am not sort of worrying about what time he is going to get in and disturb me. It's his own silly fault. Nothing I suggest about him getting an early night makes any difference.

My husband and I sleep in separate rooms we are both happier cannot hear Husbands snoring so we both now get a goodnight sleep.

My OH has chest problems so we recently changed our king size bed for 2 single automatic adjustable beds, the kind that have a remote control to raise the head end or the foot end. It's good for him as he can prop himself more upright without the need to masses of pillows. I find it rather difficult to change to sheets but it's worth that hassle. The two bases are bolted together so that you can't fall down the gap in the middle!

I suffer from restless leg syndrome and although I take medication I still jump about for hours - even during the day. I walk around the house sometimes with little relief so you can imagine what hubby had to put up with until he moved sleeping quarters.

Single rooms with visiting rights.

This is due to my restless leg and his snoring!! We have a super king with 2 mattresses and two duvets which was really great until my legs started. The option of soft/firm no problem.?

My friend, who is widowed, says she would give anything to have her husband beside her in bed. If we moan about our DHs snoring she says "At least you have got him".
So my DH and me sleep in the same bed and only separate if the going gets tough. Sometimes we have a bad night in hotels as there is nowhere to decamp to. But mostly we manage.

littlefierce please tell me how is Periodic Limb Movement Disorder any different from periodically moving one's arms or legs as you change position in your sleep? Serious question!

Nansypansy Mon 14-Mar-16 07:42:21

Separate rooms didn't work for us so we separated.

littlefierce Sun 13-Mar-16 23:22:03

My OH has Periodic Limb Movement Disorder (yes it's an actual thing!) He takes drugs to damp down the movement but my nights are still far from peaceful. We have a 5' bed (room too small to take a bigger one) with 2x2'6 zip & link pocket sprung mattresses. Zipped from the base rather than the top if that makes sense so there's an actual small gap between them. This has helped a lot, but we too are thinking of separate duvets as one of his little tricks is to pull it when fast asleep, it pulls across my face & wakes me up, assuming I'm not still lying there awake & wanting to kill him. We've also made the guest room very comfortable & spent a decent amount on the bed in there, so if all else fails I slope off there for a couple of nights till I feel human again.

Jaxie grin

We've got an ordinary double but with a king size duvet but we have stayed in hotels where you get two singles zipped together and they are fantastic. You'd need a pretty big bedroom, though.

Separate beds, separate bedrooms, separate bathrooms - bliss!

We have a king size bed, but nowadays I sleep on it by myself. DH does not like to disturb me as I go to bed earlier than he does. These days he sleeps in our son's old room. I quite like this arrangement, if I'm honest. I sleep much better by myself.

Shizam Sun 13-Mar-16 20:31:50

Yes, get two singles, can be pushed together. Can't flip my very heavy king size mattress on my own. Have bought a mattress topper, which makes it comfier.

We have a double and a spare single in the other room. We use the double bed but if. one of us is disturbed by the other, my restless legs for example, then my beloved other half just moves to the other bed. Quite often I just move when I get up for the loo. Works well.

pollyparrot Sun 13-Mar-16 19:49:59

We sleep in separate rooms. DH was the gentleman and left me in the double bed and he now sleeps in his own room in a single. This was a joint decision which we made based on the need to get a good night's sleep. He snores and get's up for the loo several times and I toss and turn all night. It works for us.

We have a king-size Tempur mattress on a Tempur base and as someone said up-post, you can't generally feel the other person moving about.

That said, those twin bed zipped up numbers are good and you get a lot of room.

NemosMum Sun 13-Mar-16 18:23:29

Widowed now, but we got an IKEA super kingsize bed frame in which fit 2 single mattresses. No need to zip them together. We used single sheets & duvets, and were thus able to accommodate different temperature requirements. I put a kingsize cotton counterpane over the top, so looks good. Would recommend: loads of room to stretch out, and you can easily reach over and have a cuddly. Only thing is .... it feels quite lonely on your own sad.

Keys of Clacton used to do all shapes and sizes of bed linen

Willow500 Sun 13-Mar-16 18:02:14

We're only 62 and have been in separate rooms about 20 years now. He snored badly so moved out to the other bedroom so we both got a better night's sleep however it was discovered he has sleep apnea about 7 years ago so now has a c-pap machine which blows air into his nose all night - it makes a noise and would keep me awake so we just stay in our own rooms. He told me this week that he can use it like a snorkel and pull the duvet right over his head to keep the light out when he has a lie in grin

Conni7 Sun 13-Mar-16 16:33:13

We have had a 6 ft zipped-up bed for 12 years now, and I can recommend it. I have unzipped the mattresses, but not the frame, as it is easier to turn one at a time. The only disadvantage is that if you are on your own at any time you can't sleep in the middle because of the ridge.

EllenT Sun 13-Mar-16 16:19:23

Soakandsleep.com have a wide range of superking bedding - and frequent offers. Good quality and value.

tinkerbelle Sun 13-Mar-16 16:10:19

I miss the cuddles when I de-camp into single bed. The snoring can be a problem though - his not mine!! At moment wouldn't want to regularly sleep separately but we are only young at 68 yrs - who knows may change my mind in 20 years time!

Granny23 Sun 13-Mar-16 16:00:34

Yes Margaret The luxury of a spare room is still denied to the poor. Now they call it the Bedroom Tax.

MargaretX Sun 13-Mar-16 15:13:51

There is no evidence that having your own bedroom is the end of a marriage. The Aristocracy have always done it. it was the poor who could not afford two beds where all piled in together.

Mostly its the snoring that starts the wives off wanting to have good night's sleep in their own room. Some even take sleeping pills because Hubby snores. I say go for it properly. move into the nicest of the single rooms and make it your own. Marriages last so long these days its being sensible after all.

We have seperate bedrooms.
We each have an electic adjustable bed...
4 foot wide. We bought them from a local.
Mobility Shop. They let us try them out in their showroom so no commission pushy salesman involved !! They came and set them up for us. So now I can sit up iñ bed in comfort for as long as I like listening to
my audio book being read to me.
If my legs need to be elevated thats done too by the press of a button. Can thoroughly recommend them.
We can keep in touch by my mobile and he has the landlone phone. Perfect arrangemt for us oldies. smile
