How do you get out of a low seat?

We were visiting friends yesterday and all the seating was so low that DH and I had to resort to our tried and tested 'rising strategy'. DH pushes me up out of my seat, I then turn and present elbow which DH grasps firmly, I grasp his elbow likewise and lean back until my weight, aided by gravity, pulls him up. I am always concerned in case DH lets go too soon but all has worked so far. grin

Synonymous what happened? sad

I know things can happen very quickly. A different health problem occurred with me over the course of a few days. It's a bummer.

jinglbellsfrocks Thu 10-Mar-16 17:12:51

I'm back btw. smile

Jings

Not sure why you think I know something about the OP.?

I was making a generalised comment . Perhaps one day you will understand what the comments that have found themselves with the 'seating issue' mean.

To be honest I hope you don't ever understand because that will mean you are in the words of Frank Spencer ' I'm having a spot of bother Betty' Enjoy your good health it is a precious thing, that is genuinely felt , it was not meant as a sarcastic comment but could be read that way which is the problem with posting.

jinglbellsfrocks Thu 10-Mar-16 17:16:35

For God's sake Pogs! Try reading my previous post. Life isn't all a bed of roses for me either.

I should have kept my mouth shut. Shades of wishing stuff on me surfacing! hmm

I'm out of here. Sharpish!

Greyduster Thu 10-Mar-16 17:26:07

About three weeks ago I was on the floor with my grandson, helping him to build something. When I came to get up, I simply couldn't. My daughter and DH had to get me under the arms and lever me into a standing position. GS thought it was very funny, but DD was very worried. It was the first evidence she'd had that my mobility is not what it was. She thinks I'm like Peter Pan and won't grow old (she accepts the fact that I've never grown up!).

Synonymous Thu 10-Mar-16 17:29:49

Greyduster it does make you feel very vulnerable doesn't it. hmm

POGS Thu 10-Mar-16 17:33:39

Jingle

What happened there.

You asked a question, I answered.

I made a point of saying that my words could sound sarcastic but that was not intended. I genuinely do not see why you feel by anything I said.

POGS Thu 10-Mar-16 17:34:35

feel annoyed

Synonymous Thu 10-Mar-16 17:42:38

jings don't disappear so fast, I can't keep up with you. You make me laugh and have a whacky (to me) view on things. smile
As for what happened I woke up one morning and found I had had a stroke in the night. Dreadful shock. Everything changed. Business had to go. Had to learn to swallow, speak, use hand etc etc etc. After that I got something else, then another thing until DH wryly said that if it was free I would have it thanks! grin Still it could have been worse and I am still here and found I am much loved - so I am happy!

We all have different problems and the chances are that if we all pooled them and then were told to choose from all those in the pile then we would probably take back the ones we ourselves had put in since we have already worked out how to deal with them. We are a pretty resilient bunch aren't we! smile

Synonymous Thu 10-Mar-16 17:47:08

Pogs please don't be annoyed. flowers
You obviously also have problems or a great deal of empathy as you seem to know how things are. One doesn't appreciate things until they are gone but equally you find joy in so much you once thought was - mediocre - if that is the right word. I have a whole pile of words lying down there and can never find the right one! grin

petra Thu 10-Mar-16 17:55:08

Jingle. I was like you until it happened to me. Do you remember that Michael Mosley advice about doing squats while cleaning your teeth?
As per usual I went right over the top ( got up to 50 squats) now I can't walk far, go to keep fit, problems getting up off the floor.

merlotgran Thu 10-Mar-16 17:58:40

Osteoarthritis in my knees, jingl

It's a nuisance because they just don't 'lever' when weight bearing which makes getting out of a bath difficult as well.

Other than that I'm pretty fit and healthy so mustn't grumble grin

Synonymous Thu 10-Mar-16 17:59:53

petra don't think it was the squats - even if you did go over the top! grin

POGS Thu 10-Mar-16 18:03:56

Synonymous

I'm not annoyed. The second post was not aimed at Jingle I simply missed the word ' annoyed' out of the first post grin

Thanks anyway .

jinglbellsfrocks Thu 10-Mar-16 18:32:18

OMG Synonomous that is so horrible! That would just about put the kybosh on it for me.

(I only went to cook the dinner) smile

Synonymous Thu 10-Mar-16 18:41:08

jings it wouldn't because you would manage in the same way you have managed everything else in your life. You just do. It is what it is. smile
As for cooking the dinner DH is doing that at present, bless him, and he does it really well too so I am very fortunate.

Pogs blush Didn't read that properly!

rubylady Thu 10-Mar-16 18:55:26

My tea (food, I'm in t'North) consisted of bread, crisps and mayo, brought by my son. I was at the hospital this morning for an echocardiogram, came home, had a sleep and then was really shattered still so a sit down friendly tea.

I can't get up from being too low and now have to tell the dentist or anyone medical that I can't lean too far back neither as I can't get my breath then. You are right Synonymous it is what it is, but it sure does make me frustrated and sad sometimes that I can't even walk without getting breathless and a tremendous pressure comes in my head making me worry that I am going to collapse at any moment. I had to ask for a wheelchair today to go to clinic, it's embarrassing.

Synonymous Thu 10-Mar-16 19:14:09

ruby you cannot let anything you need to do embarrass you. You are doing what you have to do and you have to tell it like it is.
I have learnt how incredibly kind and helpful people can be when they understand your situation.
Hope you get all the help you need and the tests clearly show what is needed. Let us know how you get on. ((hugs)) and flowers

Jalima Thu 10-Mar-16 20:44:05

A friend who is a bit younger than me (early 60s) demonstrated that she is able to get up from a sitting yoga position on the floor (legs crossed) without any aid (no hands, no going over onto your knees grin). Apparently we should be able to do it.
I can't.

^ I think it may be time for us to get a higher sofa^
Just had two delivered yesterday (and a recliner for DH which also tips him out apparently)

I did have my chair out in the garden and sat in the sunshine for half an hour which was really lovely, so nice to have a gentle breeze wafting over me Where? It was OK here today but freezing cold (and the gentle breeze yesterday would have blown me into next week!).

To get up from the floor I have to go over on to my hands and knees, then into a yoga 'dog' position, then move my legs nearer my hands, then up, hoping no-one is watching me.

jinglbellsfrocks Thu 10-Mar-16 21:09:51

I would try that sit down, stand up thing, but I need a wee and cba to shift.

jinglbellsfrocks Thu 10-Mar-16 21:11:43

I tried it.

Bye bye.

shock

Galen Thu 10-Mar-16 21:26:43

My chair ejects me out of it

Elrel Thu 10-Mar-16 21:28:07

I am past caring. In pilates and yoga I crawl to the nearest furniture to stand up. When I play at home with small grandchildren I also get to the nearest furniture. My son and older granddaughters have now got used to this.

For preference I sit on a dining type chair. From a normal, not very low, easy chair or sofa I lean forward until my weight is over my feet before I begin to stand. Try this, it's simple and can really make a difference.

I sat on the grass at my grandson's Sports Day having first asked a nearby couple whether they'd mind helping me up later. Of course they agreed to haul me up but in fact I managed by somehow dragging myself up my walking stick. Or did I pull myself up by my own shoelaces?!

Elrel Thu 10-Mar-16 21:32:39

Galen - I have an ejector chair too, demonstrated it to a neighbour only this evening as his family are urging him to get one.
