My DS and DinL regularly have an alcohol free January and I am wondering whether to join them. Anyone else tried it ?

Cheers wine

Well done everybody, I'm hanging on in there too... and to my amazement find I've started to actually look forward to my tomato juice and Worcester sauce 'tipple' in the evening. (Nobody could me more surprised than I am!) Pleased to have lost a few pounds and can now sit down in my fave jeans without feeling as if they'll burst at the seams, so that's a bonus. Onwards and sideways...

I'm still in and, oddly, not missing it at all now. I can't say i've lost any weight or that i feel any better, but the wellbeing effect has probably been subsumed by the fact that i've had a heavy cold for most of the month (which i'm sure a few Oban malts or home made sloe gins would have seen off promptly!). I will be pleased to see the month out though!

Gin, wine and all sorts have been consumed around me tonight - I had a quick sniff of the gin because it was a gift from DS's GF to DH but I can't can wait to taste it wink

Seriously, I'm not really missing it - but I think all the cordials we have experimented with in the mocktails aren't doing my waistline any good shock

Well done everyone - aren't we doing well ...?

Dry day 22 tcrgrin

Well done everyone, especially those surrounded by others imbibing.

I did declare at the beginning of this that I'd have a drink this weekend as it's my birthday so tonight and tomorrow I will have a glass. Then back on track till the end.

Jogginggirl I need you to please put a request in with the Dry January Committee. Next weekend I am going to a surprise 70th Birthday Party for my DinL's Mum. If I and my DS who is also off the alcohol succumb to a drink or two 48 hours before the 1st of Feb how many days extra must we do as penance ?

I have asked for dispensation from the Pope, but he was out at a drinks party when I phoned. grin

janeainsworth Sat 23-Jan-16 21:38:03

Happy Birthday Anya smile

ffinnochio Sat 23-Jan-16 22:16:18

Anya Happy Birthday, and wishing you many happy returns! ?

baNANAGran3 Sat 23-Jan-16 22:18:07

Happy Birthday Anya and sincerely hope you don't have a hangover when you get round to reading this smile. Not sure if I'm considered a committee member but I have the timing problem too - as I said way back I went to my wine tasting group one night earlier in the month AND didn't start til 4th January because of a social weekend. So where does that leave me on 1st February? All advice will be carefully considered...

Anya Sun 24-Jan-16 10:10:14

Thank you all for your kind good wishes. I did have a lovely birthday and 2 glasses of wine with the meal. There's nothing like celebrating with best friends and family is there? smile

baNANAGran3 Sun 24-Jan-16 10:18:06

No there isn't! Sorry that's it now though, back on the old wagon and onwards we clip clop....

NanKate Sun 24-Jan-16 15:45:12

I'd rather canter baNana get there quicker. smile

grannyqueenie Sun 24-Jan-16 17:34:17

Glad to hear you enjoyed your birthday tipple celebrations, Anya. As you say celebrating with family and good friends is the best, with or without the wine! We're spending next weekend with a group of old pals, I suspect dry January may come to a slightly premature and rather abrupt end smile, I'm hoping it may lead to damp February but am making no promises!

jogginggirl Sun 24-Jan-16 22:40:42

Ha ha NanKate clearly you don't have my contacts re: the papal one ... wink My DM - who floats through life unplugging things and removing batteries ? has a hot line to the man himself ?

I have asked her to put in a good word for you but not to mention that her favourite TV programme is Mrs. Brown's Boys shock
I think that would definitely go against her ... and you grin

I am sure the dispensation will be granted for you and your DS and my DM will also put in a good word for you baNANA (the poor woman has spent so much time on her knees throughout her lifetime she is now less than 4' 11" tall) grin
To be honest - January has been such a L O N G month - I vote that we don't add any days on for slip-ups - what do others think ...?

I can't even think about a damp February grannyqueenie we are off to a very nice hotel in the Lake District on the 1st and I am looking forward to a couple of glasses of something nice wine wink

So glad you had a good birthday Anya - family and friends definitely the way to go...❤️

We had a lovely time celebrating diva 1's BIG 8th birthday today and she was bribed persuaded not to wake me until 7.30.a.m. We had pancakes with fresh strawberries and cream for breakfast and then met up with others for lunch... where did those years go...?

Dry day 24 and definitely counting now tcrgrin

baNANAGran3 Sun 24-Jan-16 22:57:54

joggin - no days added on for slip-ups - I like your thinking - a lot! You're right, January does seem to be never ending but hey it's all downhill now and we can do it. I do like a wee dram on Burns Night (tomorrow), another pleasure gone. However I WILL keep smile ing!

NanKate Mon 25-Jan-16 16:34:37

You certainly have friends in high places Jogging and your DM too.

I thoroughly agree NO EXTRA days added. Hurray. wine

I am considering trying not to have an alcoholic drink at all at the forthcoming party on Saturday. I suspect if I manage that I might even receive a pair of angelic wings as a prize.

Considering I am not Catholic (my Mum was though) I suppose I should be contacting Archbishop Welby. However I could ask my Godson, who is a vicar, for dispensation. Fortunately he likes a tipple too. grin

Enough of my witterings.

jogginggirl Mon 25-Jan-16 23:04:17

Not my friends in high places NanKate - I'm afraid I was ex-communicated years ago ...LOL. But my DM has managed to say more than a few Hail Mary's for me over the years ...wink I should think it's quite handy having a GS who is a vicar - and likes a tipple too...smile

Now you've got me thinking - maybe that's where I developed my wine passion from - all that communion wine every Sunday ... wine?

Anyway, glad we're all in agreement and no extra days will be added for the 'slip-ups'

Dry day 25 - is it me, or is it just flying by now ...? tcrgrin

Anya Tue 26-Jan-16 09:52:41
