This will be our reply to violence...

The west could get rid of huge numbers of them with the aid of drones, air strikes, and technology.

And yes, ab. It's an us or them situation.

We declare war on IS. Give Syria back to Assad. And then try to negotiate to get rid of him.

We would have to go along with the Russians when they say, "a rebel is a rebel".

Iran must not get nuclear capability otherwise God help us.

Our security services are also helped by having no common borders - weapons etc harder to bring in. Apparently we are "embedded" with the French security so they should know what we know. They also have the same powers as our lot.

Afghanistan and Iraq are recognised countries, with representation in the UN. We shouldn't have invaded Iraq, that was illegal. Did we invade Afghanistan or were we invited in? I don't remember.

So called Islamic State is no such thing and is an invading force. They are quite visible, not guerillas, they have armies and weapons and move about the areas they have invaded.

The people whose countries, lives, cultures and religions are threatened know who the are and where they are. It's not some invisible enemy.

Who do we declare war on? Didn't we try that in Afghanistan and Iraq? Now those wars are blamed for bringing us to where we are today.

If we go to war how do we ensure that we only kill the people we want to kill. If we kill indiscriminately how would we then differ from the terrorists?

You can't declare a conventional war on terrorists because they don't fight a conventional war. Once innocents in the area start dying you push others into the terror groups to take revenge for the one's they've lost.

I'm not offering any solutions but pointing out the problems of the going to war scenario.

We've tried it many times before. It has never worked.

Can I please correct a few earlier posters. The Eagles of Death Metal are a rock band with many different styles due to the ever changing band members. The name is a tongue in cheek one.
One of the tracks on their latest album is Duran Duran's Save a Prayer, definitely not Heavy Metal.

The intelligence services are the key to it all.

I don't think we realise how good our intelligence services are, it must be so difficult keeping tabs on everyone, and working out where the next outrage may come from.

Start Anya, start, this means the very first step not the solution to end the horror

Oh yes, that'll really show 'em!!

Let's start by stopping sucking up to Saudia Arabia

There's a theory that the next attack will be targeted at the US because war planes from Russia, France and the US are leading the main counterattack.

The BBC's Security Correspondent Frank Gardner stated the recent attacks are a gear change for IS and more like al-Qaeda's highly organised methods and going for big publicity, high-casualty attacks that make headlines around the world. Apparently although Western counter-terrorism experts knew something like Paris could happen, they had recently come round to the conclusion the prevailing threat was more likely to come from self-starters, like the attackers of Lee Rigby.

I agree merlotgran we are just waiting for the next attack and hoping it's not targeted at us.

Different responses from different people and groups.

I'm in no position, unfortunately, to kill these murdering morons - would that I could get rid of every last one of them for the sake of my grandchildren, but I can't.

So the response that Lucky posted was fitting for that group of musicians.

Many of us have morphed the tricolor over our Facebook profile, it's all we can do to show our support for France and the French.

BUT the response from the International Community, the UN, NATO, etc has to be much more than the pussy-footing around we've seen so far. It's about time war was forcefully declared on Daesh and these murders given a taste of their own medicine.

I think our security people are much better at it than the French merlot. If that's any comfort.

This atrocity was alarmingly close to the downing of the Russian airliner.

There used to be quite a gap between terrorist attacks. They are now well organised and stepping up a gear.

I hate to say it but we are just helplessly twiddling our thumbs while waiting for the next one and hoping it isn't London.

I don't think President Hollande will be thinking music will do the trick. Calming as it might be to a few of us old biddies in our secure little environments. (Perhaps secure)

I'm not sure about psychopathy. Isn't it just the early brainwashing of predisposed personalities.?
I hadn't considered the Western decadence aspect. LG. but yes that makes sense. ( in their minds I mean).
I hope your decadent Schubert concert was well attended and much enjoyed. I'd love to have heard it.

Can't see the point in even mentioning the band, or their unfortunate in this instance, name.

And yes. Exactly what gillybob said 11:08:19.

Music and culture are wonderful things, but of course will not halt anyone who plans violence, as to these people not loving or liking anyone that is nonsense, Hitler loved his alsation Blondie and his mistress Eva Braun as well as thinking Wagner's music was superb. They simply do not care what happens to anyone outside their own circle.

LuckyGirl sadly no, I wasn't there. I only found out about it when it was looking at the BBC Coventry & Warwickshire news website. There was a live link to what was happening. I was slow to make the connection with the date this year.

The three attacks were chosen because they represent Western decadence. People were doing things for pleasure - watching sport, listening to music and drinking alcohol (and eating). Mixed sexes too. All for pleasure, so many things that do not sit with the extreme beliefs of IS members. I didn't know the band survived. That's some good news.

I suspect most IS members are estranged from their families.

I think though that there are a few psycopaths and sociopaths about[sorry dont know the difference between them, and google seems vague on it too].

We would think that gillybob but

There are clearly some people with some much hate in their heart (do they have a heart in that sense?) who have no values and no love, either for themselves or their families. Do they love their mothers?, fathers? Children or siblings? I doubt it very much. My DH said that maybe they have a chemical imbalance in their brain that removes their "feelings" that enables them to do what they do. I used to poo poo that idea but have started to wonder myself. There has to be something seriously wrong with someone who can do what they do with no thought for even themselves.

There are those who say we can do nothing to halt the activities of these dreadful people, but there'd be something, or there will be no music, no culture and no civilisation.
