I think that's a wonderful sentiment.

Violence only begets more violence. We've tried fighting fire with fire for thousands of years and still haven't learned that it doesn't work.

Music stirs the soul and soothes the heart. Nothing wrong with the sentiment but anger and hatred will be hard to quell at the moment.

I think it's a lovely way to mark what happened in Paris and that it will have touched those at the concert.

Saturday night was the 75th anniversary of the Coventry Blitz. Hundreds of people attended a concert and took part in a ceremony to mark the anniversary of the Luftwaffe bombing raid on Coventry, which left 568 people dead and most of the city centre in ruins. As part of the annual Peace Festival in the city, a chain of people passed a light to each other, finishing at the cathedral which was lit up in blue, white and red to mark Friday's attacks in Paris. I think that was poignant too.

I remember visiting an open air auditorium in Estonia years ago - this is where the Estonian people used to gather to sing national songs in defiance of their Russian masters. The day we visited was the fifth anniversary of the day the Russian tanks had left.

I think you missed the subtlety jbf - what the quote is saying is that, faced with violence, we have to maintain culture and civilization and hold true to those values that make us a decent nation. Thank you for posting the information about Coventry Wilma - it sounds as though this was a very moving and appropriate ceremony. Were you there?

Tricia - yes, I thought the band playing in Paris was a bit unfortunate, especially its name, which does not exactly represent the best in Western culture - but at least they are allowed to play, and there is no censorship, however grim they might be.

I mentioned the name of the band because I thought it was ironic.
But I wouldn't be surprised if the terrorists picked on it deliberately.

but I took it that she was referring to TriciaF post at 10.02 where her choice of words unfortunately implied a different meaning to the one intend. As I said in my post at 10.22

And why do bands choose names? Mainly nowadays because we have to be shocked or we don't look up and listen. The cute play on words Beatles type have long gone.

Maybe the terrorists chose the venue because they knew it would be full of young people and they wouldn't look out of place when they went in.

I'd have thought it was more a case of size of venue an the amount of death and destruction they could cause. I think the bands name is an unfortunate coincidence.
