John Lewis Christmas Ad

What a crazy upturned world we live in.

There is something going around on FB about JL spending £7 million on this advert and asking why they couldn't spend this money giving lonely old people a jolly good Christmas.

The person who posted it has a point - JL could have just said that they were not wasting £7m on the advert and were helping old people or homeless charities instead - people would have respected that and thought more of them.

It's really a great pity because JL has made Age UK their Christmas Charity so might backfire I fear.

Like or dislike, JL certainly have people talking about their ad.

I don't know though J52 - it may get talked about but will it pull in more shoppers than usual to JL which is the point?

Having seen it several times I actually strongly dislike it, and as I'm rarely enticed by adverts it won't have the desired effect.

In fact I think it's both creepy and disturbing.

I don't like it, as someone pointed out it is rather strange (creepy even) an old man watching a young girl through a telescope - I don't know but it is a bit odd.
We've been to the moon, DGC will learn about that and perhaps think that that is where their elderly relatives are.

Who thinks these things up?
It won't make me go to JL any more than I would normally!

I liked the version on youtube of John Lewis but star wars instead. The best bit is the ending. Maybe we could do the same to the whinging darlings on MN?

I think John Lewis has shot itself in the foot this year.

I don't like it, it made me feel very uneasy.

Was discussed on Andrew Marr show this morning and consensus was yes poor old chap was still on his own and can now see everyone else enjoying Christmas, I am not keen on it personally

I hope my little grandson doesn't see it. He thinks his grand dad (my DH)
is somewhere in outer space (he passed away when my gs was 4.)

If he see this ad he might think that his grand dad is alone out there
and might be able to see him with a telescope.

Not a very happy ad. The poor old chap is still on his own at the end of it.

Soppy tear-jerking as usual.

I saw that someone said why not invite lonely old people in the neighbourhood around, rather than wave to one on the moon!

No, I did not like the add, there seemed to be something missing from it and I think that compared to the previous John Lewis ads which I loved, and always gave me goosebumps and yes made me cry but in a good way, big smile on my face. the previous ads. had a feel good factor. Happy ending and that's nice, this one made me sad and guilty., not really a happy ending. Is that what John Lewis was hoping for? Bring back the bear I say.

I wish the little girl had sent him a penguin and a food parcel so that he had something to eat and care for. Definitely not a feel good advert.

Didn't get me in a festive mood at all, just left me sad.....bring back the penquins !

Haven't seen it. It's early November! I don't watch 'Christmas' ads or any ads - I zap the sound as soon as the ads come on. I don't want Christmas rammed down my neck this early.

Well, if the child hadn't sent him the telescope he wouldn't be able to see them having a wonderful time...so now he'll feel even more lonely

I thought the "whiny song " was the best thing about it.
I have watched it again and the thought of the poor lonely old man watching the family having a wonderful time without him made me sad all over again.

It's OK but the dreadful whiny song spoils it. This isn't a patch on the penguin advert last year.
