Love it! Brought a tear to the eye.

Oops sorry - I've just seen this has been covered in TV/Radio ads etc.....

It is funny that the TV and news papers are so I interested in shop ads.

Something not right about commercialisation I.can't put my finger on. The ads are lovely but don't affect my buying.

I did love the penguin one last year or the year before.

It`s lovely, so heart warming, but also very sad.

bikergran Fri 06-Nov-15 16:54:48

very sad sad hope gs doesn't watch it! why do they have to make such sad adverts like that.

Who has dumped an old man on the moon? Outragous.

It's not going to make people who are on their own this festive season very good, is it?

And is this how we treat our old people, putting them on the moon? They have all year to come up with something and this was the best idea? I won't be buying from John Lewis this year.

I have two aged parents who do get lonely and leave me feeling guilty at times, this advert just makes the guilt worse.

rubylady Fri 06-Nov-15 21:07:00

sorry, feel very good

Penstemmon Fri 06-Nov-15 22:04:18

Oh I just thought it was supposed to be 'the man on the moon' !

jinglbellsfrocks Fri 06-Nov-15 22:13:41

Well, it is. But it's also, quite obviously, atake on a lonely old person, alone at Christmas. It's crass. Whether or not they intended it that way.

Indinana Fri 06-Nov-15 22:15:40

There's already a quite long thread about this ad which you can find here

Indinana Fri 06-Nov-15 22:16:55

Sorry jogginggirl, just seen that you'd mentioned the other thread already.

Nana3 Fri 06-Nov-15 22:22:22

What did John Lewis charge for for the old man's Christmas Day delivery I wonder? DGD says, "A million quid".moon smile

TwiceAsNice Fri 06-Nov-15 22:52:19

Very disappointed in their ad this year, I loved the penguin last year. Apparently it cost £1 million to make and they've spent another £6 million to have it shown at peak times on the television. They could surely have come up with something better

Daisyanswerdo Fri 06-Nov-15 23:22:00

Why does the song have to be in an American accent? Isn't John Lewis a British firm? Surely we have a rich tradition of songs here that could be chosen from.

harrigran Fri 06-Nov-15 23:33:26

TBH I thought it was poor. I never watch TV adverts anyway but it would have me reaching for the remote if I did.

WilmaKnickersfit Sat 07-Nov-15 00:04:10

I realise John Lewis teamed up with Age UK to raise the awareness of loneliness at Christmas, but I wasn't blown away by this year's ad. The old man is still alone at the end. sad

NfkDumpling Sat 07-Nov-15 07:26:18

Nope, sorry, don't like it. Too many questions kept popping into my head like where's his veggie patch, dog, children? Is she his granddaughter and the parents dumped him there because he was so horrible? How does he pick her out from the whole world zooming round? How did the balloons manage to float there?

If it hadn't been advertised as the John Lewis ad I'd never have noticed .... Or paid much attention to it.

Leticia Sat 07-Nov-15 07:29:19

I can't understand why people make such a fuss about adverts! I haven't seen it- at some point I am bound to see it on TV. I already know what it is about having read about it in the paper. Mad!

goose1964 Sat 07-Nov-15 09:03:49

It offends my inner geek

AllTheLs Sat 07-Nov-15 09:06:33

It's OK but the dreadful whiny song spoils it. This isn't a patch on the penguin advert last year.

annsixty Sat 07-Nov-15 09:16:43

I thought the "whiny song " was the best thing about it.
I have watched it again and the thought of the poor lonely old man watching the family having a wonderful time without him made me sad all over again. sad

Ana Sat 07-Nov-15 10:44:25

Well, if the child hadn't sent him the telescope he wouldn't be able to see them having a wonderful time...so now he'll feel even more lonely confused

margrete Sat 07-Nov-15 10:50:18

Haven't seen it. It's early November! I don't watch 'Christmas' ads or any ads - I zap the sound as soon as the ads come on. I don't want Christmas rammed down my neck this early.

jinglbellsfrocks Sat 07-Nov-15 11:13:26

I wish there weren't two threads on this!
