Lying in bed this morning, flicking through the newspapers on my Kindle (as you do), this caught my eye in the Bel Mooney column in yesterday's DM and because it sounded familiar I read on (probably for the first time ever, I don't do Agony Aunts
). Anyway, someone had taken issue with Bel's response to a request for advice and she reports as follows:
"The writer, ‘S’, continued: ‘If you want to know some reasons a daughter would cut her mother out of her life, imagine if it was you trying to protect your children from an interfering someone who will not take NO for an answer, who uses every tactic possible, even writing about personal matters in a national paper, just to have their own way, regardless and probably heedless of the damage caused.’ 'S’ accused me of allowing myself to be ‘manipulated’ — when she knew no more than I did about the situation."
So, it made me think - (a) why do Agony Aunts bother? and (b) thinking about a recent similar situation on the GN forums - why would I (we) give advice to random strangers who post on forums like this one? With there being so many scams out there - it would be so easy to fall prey to one on here.
I usually am hesitant about offering advice to strangers, I may acknowledge the post, but I shall be a lot more careful about replying to requests for advice about personal situations by new posters on GN. They can write to Bel Mooney!
(Apologies to new posters who jump right in with a genuine post about a complex family problem ...)
