Using the original cast , what tasks would the platoon take if they manned the Channel Tunnel at Folkestone,
For example would the spiv be selling his wears to those he lets through.

I don't really think this situation can be compared to the Jews in Nazi Germany. Those lucky enough to escape did so by stealth or by help from Jewish organisations or underground workers. They didn't arrive in their thousands demanding to be let in.

Theirs was certain death if they were discovered or betrayed.

It was a different time.

I am with Jane10 in that I see so many pictures at Calais of people who should be protecting and supporting their families not trying to flee from them and yes I think the Dads army attitude of tea and billets is the one I feel we should really be aiming for. I do feel the French are behaving really badly and if it were the other way round ie people trying to get through to France and blocking up Dover we would not tolerate such mismanagement

Anniebach Sun 23-Aug-15 12:41:21

Merlotgran, those with money did leave by sea , children were taken into this country if the parents paid . Persecuted people are persecuted people no matter then or now

merlotgran Sun 23-Aug-15 12:54:09

I know about the kindertransport, Anniebach and how those with money had an advantage but they still kept their departure from Nazi Germany as quiet as possible.

My problem is not with the children or women. Its the huge crowds of fit young men crowding the boats and first at the gates. How can their home countries ever be turned back to places fit to live in if the young and strong abandon their homes and families in this 'me first, I dream of living in UK' sort of way? I was horrified to read last week of a boat with 450 people on it-this was said to contain only 10 women and children. How brave of those men. In our last wars the conscientious objectors didn't bale out.

Anniebach Sun 23-Aug-15 13:48:21

Jane10, if you were a young man in Syria how would you start the fight back? how would you win a victory over ISIS, you have no money, no arms

vampirequeen Sun 23-Aug-15 13:54:51

You can't judge these young men by the standards of Pike. He would have been classed as racially pure so would have been safe....well as safe as you can be in an occupied country. It would have been totally different had Pike been Jewish. Then he would have had to escape or be killed.

Anya Sun 23-Aug-15 13:58:02

Someone has to start the fight back and who better than the young men? And, in the case of the Kurds, the young women. If the Kurdish 'nation' can stand and fight back, why not others?

It's those with families to protect who need our help most urgently. This picture moved me to tears sad

Jane10 Sun 23-Aug-15 14:17:24

Absolutely Anya! Lets get the children safe but not give up the fight. Go the Kurds!

Stansgran Sun 23-Aug-15 14:24:56

I wish I could find out who the young Kurdish woman is on the the front of the Sunday Times magazine. I met a young woman a few years ago who was a Kurd and I felt immediately it was her photo.

Anniebach I'd bide my time. Keep a low profile and keep my eyes open as to what's going on. Just as in every war with oppressors since time began, opposition gradually grows. I'd want to be a part of that. If I was a man I'd try to keep working doing whatever is necessary. If possible I'd try to have a "useful" occupation that didn't draw attention to myself. I'd try to model myself on those brave people currently living there that are part of an underground network rescuing captured women. It won't happen overnight but it will happen in time if people of good will stay and band together.
If I was a woman (which I am!) I'd keep a very low profile indeed and burka myself up when outside! You do what you do and you do what you have to.
vampirequeen these migrants are not Jewish? I don't understand your comment. Our men in the last war were every creed and colour and didn't try to run away.

I am never sure if I would stay or go.

If you go, you have a chance of getting other family members out too I would have thought.

soontobe Sun 23-Aug-15 14:37:13

I almost think that it is their duty to try and escape. Not sure.

soontobe Sun 23-Aug-15 14:37:50

I dont see the point in being a sitting duck.

Anya Sun 23-Aug-15 14:43:26

Just as well soldiers didn't feel like that during WW2 S2B but then some people are quite content to leave the bravery to others and just take the benefits when it's all over!

soontobe Sun 23-Aug-15 14:47:52

But if it is a small area that you are escaping from? And you have little hope of beating them?

soontobe Sun 23-Aug-15 14:50:38

If enough people get out in the first instance, they are then left to fight amongst themselves.

soontobe Sun 23-Aug-15 14:52:16

I dont believe in staying in a country if you have the option of leaving. If the good guys leave, it leaves the bad behaviour people there.

Jane10 Sun 23-Aug-15 14:53:27

So what should happen? Hundreds of thousands of people (probably more) from the Middle East and Africa just all migrate wholesale to Europe. Leave the oppressors back home to just take over completely. Give the green light to unspeakable people traffickers peddling "the dream" of a perfect life in Europe? In UK? Why not?

soontobe Sun 23-Aug-15 14:57:23

You fight from a distance. You dont have to live with them to do that.

If you leave the oppressors back home, they will likely turn on themselves.

I cant blame asylum seekers from trying to leave.
Where they will go to is a problem.

I do think that some countries have space. Republic of Ireland for example.

soontobe Sun 23-Aug-15 14:59:51

Republic of Ireland dont have jobs though. And nor do many other countries. And that is a big problem. A very big problem.

Katek Sun 23-Aug-15 15:00:41

Britain only accepted around 40-50.000 Jewish immigrants prewar and around the same again after the war had started. Including the Kindertransport there were approximately 100,000 Jewish refugees accepted of which 75% were interned. They didn't buy their way in-all had to be sponsored by a British citizen who was prepared to support them so they weren't a drain on the state.

Not the same situation as Calais migrants at all

Anya Sun 23-Aug-15 15:14:24

S2B what colour is the sun on your planet?

Jane10 Sun 23-Aug-15 15:21:35

"In order for evil to prevail it is sufficient only that good men do nothing". I think ISIS and fundamentalists actually are evil. Where are the good men?

Anya Sun 23-Aug-15 15:24:08

History proves that quote over and over again.
