Children's misheard words or song lyrics

My son would sing "Oh come all ye faithful, joyful and trifle".
Once, at about 2 and a half, he asked me to sing the song about the 'sturdy piples who rode their bikes and played in the park'. After much head scratching, I realised he meant the hymn "Mothers of Salem": "When mothers of Salem their children brought to Jesus, the stern disciples drove them back and bade them depart ".
A friend's granddaughter goes into her garden to play on her jumpaline.

What stories do other gnetters have?

When our son was five he brought home his Christmas drawings from school. I was a bit baffled by the drawing of two stick figures standing on either side of a small table. Admiringing it but not knowing exactly what it represented I asked him gentky to explain. it to me. "Teacher said as it was Christmas we should all draw a picture of Jesus's table, so I did".....

Anyone remember Terry Wogan's programme and his wrong words?
"You picked a fine time to leave me loose wheel,
with four hundred children and a crock in the field."
There were loads of others. He cheered you up and gave you the best start to the day.

From 'Fig tree Unto Fig tree' was my dad's misunderstanding and my brother sang,'Once in Roy or David Sooty stole a candle shed' grin.

My late aunt went to Church, and every week would say " Forgive us our trespasses, and the liver is evil".
She never liked liver!

From she first learned to talk my GD put her dirty clothes in the washing it clean. She doesn't now as she is 8, and like to put everyone right.

One of Terry Wogan's was Billy Ocean's 'Go and get stuffed' (going gets tough)

As a C of E at a convent school it took me five years to find out that the last line of Hail Mary wasn't 'now and at the howl of the deaf'
blush

Church ritual offers quite a lot of scope for mishearing and misunderstanding. I rather like this variation of the Creed: "…suffered under a bunch of spiders…" (For the non RC, it should be suffered under Pontius Pilate.)

AlieOxon Tue 07-Apr-15 20:46:17

Hey, I'm not RC and I got it!

Lilygran Tue 07-Apr-15 21:45:02

Same Creed throughout the Church. Same religion!

absent Tue 07-Apr-15 22:15:56

Sorry – I know the Creed is mumbled through at every Catholic Mass but I don't know if it is said at all other Christian services. I was trying to be helpful.

absent - I love "suffered under a bunch of spiders," sounds so much more terrifying to me than Pontius Pilot. smile smile

Anne58 Wed 08-Apr-15 09:49:17

bramblelover that reminds me of the little boy who did a painting of Joseph, Mary and the baby Jesus with an unidentified black object with them. When asked what it was he said "The flea, you know, when the angel said "take your wife and child and flea to Israel"

rosequartz Wed 08-Apr-15 09:56:47

That's OK absent smile

C of E belongs to the One, Holy, Catholic, Apostolic Church
(The holy catholic church, the communion of saints etc)

We are just not Holy Romans.
However, I think I like 'suffered under a bunch of spiders' - which I most certainly would!

rosequartz Wed 08-Apr-15 09:57:52

phoenix lol

Lilygran Wed 08-Apr-15 10:00:40

There was also the little boy who appeared at Sunday school with a cucumber. Apparently he had misheard when the teacher said it would be nice if they could all bring a newcomer with them next week.

Mishap Wed 08-Apr-15 10:54:58

Phoenix - that is so funny! Like the child's painting of a woman kneeling by what looks like a large puddle, who is "praying for the sick."

Anne58 Wed 08-Apr-15 10:55:57

grin

Maniac Wed 08-Apr-15 17:21:18

As a child I thought a line of the Easter hymn was 'Our salvation Aspro cured' -later learnt it was 'Our salvation hath procured'
