Children's misheard words or song lyrics

@terribull - Yes Kyrie = Lord - well, these days it means Mr or Sir. That's democracy for you!

I think the Latin phrase is 'Ora pro nobis', isn't it? (Pray for us.)

As a child raised RC I really get that one.

I remember the priest saying repeatedly during a school service

"Ora ben nobis,"

The little boy next to me in church tugged my sleeve and said,

"Why is he singing about me?"

His name was Ben Lewis.

When I was a young child and Sunday Mass was in Latin, there used to be a verse I remember "Kyrie eleison" (which I think is Greek) these words would be repeated a number of times followed by a repetition of Christie eleison, anyway for a long time I thought the priest was saying "Kyrie he got lace on, Christie he got lace on"

When I was a teenager a friend's mother used to sing

They call her frying pan, looking for a man.

(They call her smartypants, looking for romance)

The other week DGS kept asking DD to be a big black man so he could fight him. This was in a busy shopping street and the more she ignored him the louder he said it and the greater her embarrassment at having raised this apparently racist child. Finally the penny dropped. He had his Spiderman suit on and wanted her to be Batman so he could fight him

Back to the 'pizza pie' (sorry). I only found out that that was how the song went at my Italian class two weeks ago, and I am in my 70s! I liked Dean Martin Frank Sinatra very much. They don't have singers like that now days.

I recall Michael Aspell saying that he used to receive letters addressed to "Dear Ask"

(Just in case, and to ensure that there is no misunderstanding, he used to host a children's programme called "Ask Aspel" )

My DS thought he was called that too, Mishap! I used to try to persuade my DC to write in to the programme - fortunately they all showed very good sense and refused to.

My DD thought that Jimmy Saville was called Jim'll Fixit, and wrote her letter Dear Jimmll.

How glad I am that her letter to him was not chosen!

A good laugh is a tonic, and very necessary on here some days.

We used to sing that as a round at Guide campfires, Elegran.

rosequartz when my children were young I used to sing 'life is butter cream' to make them laugh.

There is a song (a round) sung to Frere Jacques which genuinely goes -

It wasn't until DD1 was much older that she asked me what 'butter dream' was!

My daughter reminded me that when she was a little girl she thought Noel Edmunds was called No Ledmunds!

"He will wash away my sins". I didn't know what a sin was, so I assumed it was short for cinders. I made sure I didn't touch the cold cinders when mum cleared out the hearth in the morning. I didn't want to risk a man coming to the house to wash me!

And I remember my Dad thinking Paul and Barry Ryan's song was,

'Don't bring me your hard eggs,
I can't help you, nun'
