Children's misheard words or song lyrics

My son would sing "Oh come all ye faithful, joyful and trifle".
Once, at about 2 and a half, he asked me to sing the song about the 'sturdy piples who rode their bikes and played in the park'. After much head scratching, I realised he meant the hymn "Mothers of Salem": "When mothers of Salem their children brought to Jesus, the stern disciples drove them back and bade them depart ".
A friend's granddaughter goes into her garden to play on her jumpaline.

What stories do other gnetters have?

daffydil, the words to that song are actually 'When the moon hits the sky like a big pizza pie that's amore'!

I am well aware of this because I, too, always thought it was 'piece of pie' until not all that long ago...grin

KatyK Mon 06-Apr-15 16:33:08

Yes that's it exactly ana

When my brother and I buried our dead hamster, we gave him a little ceremony which included the words 'In the name of the Father, Son and in the hole he goes' grin

Well I never! A big pizza pie not a big piece o' pie - I never knew that until this thread! blush
We had a lovely home-made Valan Times card from DGD1 with a heart on it!

I knew someone that thought a certain song went "oh a tree in motion" grin

Mind you, for quite a time as a youngster I thought that the Christmas Carol "God rest ye merry gentlemen" said "Let nothing you display" shock

In junior school I used to wonder who Mrs Murphy was and what was good about her:

Good Mrs Murphy all my days shall surely follow me

And of course in the radio Shipping forecasts, remember them, there was Good Mrs Billity and Poor Mrs Billity

KatyK Mon 06-Apr-15 17:06:48

These are so funny

My dad came from Dorset and when he was in Infant School he thought the Lord's Prayer began with the words,

"Our Father which are in Heaven,
Hallo, what be they name."

My sister and I were staying with some friends of my parents while my mother was in hospital. It was my 8th birthday while we were there and I wrote to my mum to tell her of all the presents I'd had. They included a 5/- Poster Lorder.

I used to think it was piece of pie too ( Amore) until I saw a historical programme on tv, in the U.S. Pizza was always called pizza pie.
like the other poster, my little daughter used to sing ' the ears are alive' from the Desmond Dekka song The Israelites. She also used to sing 'pitchy potchy on the left hand side' from the Pass The Duchy song, and refused to believe me that she was singing the wrong words to either song.

rosequartz Mon 06-Apr-15 19:30:31

The little boy I sat next to in top infants had written 'the smorning'

Being a precocious 7 year old I corrected him!

My daughter at 5 was very excited to be visiting Buckland Abbey, home of Sir Francis Drake, with her school. In fact, she got over excited and fainted just as they were about to leave. I was duly telephoned and asked to collect her. She came home crying, because she was so upset she wouldn't see "The Dabby".

rosequartz Mon 06-Apr-15 19:46:23

I hope she got there at some point AshTree!

The last time I went there was with DH's DM and DGM and DGM kept pinching bits off the Busy Lizzies and shrubs, filling her pockets with cuttings to grow on at home! blush (not that she did any gardening at 85 or so)

What about the child who liked the song in assembly about the "damp settee"...........................I am the Lord of the DANCE SAID HE grin

AshTree Mon 06-Apr-15 20:13:19

Oh how funny, rosequartz. Yes, she has visited the 'Dabby' several times - it's only about 11 or 12 miles from us. Lovely place!

Nvella Tue 07-Apr-15 00:24:55

Aged 4 I asked my parents why we prayed to an "old nighty"

daffydil Tue 07-Apr-15 11:29:11

Thanks ana and Katy. for clearing up the confusion over a big piece of pie and a big pizza pie. All these years I've been gettng it wrong! It's given me a laugh anyway.

rosequartz Tue 07-Apr-15 11:30:52

who would call a pizza a pie anyway - only a song writer! grin

AshTree Tue 07-Apr-15 11:44:13

I have laughed so much reading these submissions. I think if there were to be a prize, it would have to go to KateK for 'sparing his life from his pork sausages', closely followed by Terribull and her 'most highly flavoured gravy'. They do go together quite well, don't they?
Oh and shysal with 'in the hole he goes' tbugrin
Thank you all for these hilarious examples - keep em coming!

Galen Tue 07-Apr-15 11:58:24

Terribull my children always insisted on singing ' most highly flavoured gravy' in The Angel Gabriel a From Heaven Came, as well.
Lovely carol though

Mishap Tue 07-Apr-15 13:17:34

Yes my choir know it as the Gravy Song.

feetlebaum Tue 07-Apr-15 13:33:28

My first wife thought the Beatles were singing 'Cheese got a chicken to ride'.
