My daughter has just called from New Zealand with news that my granddaughter was born two hours ago at 27 weeks gestation. She weighs just under a kilo and is now in NICU. I'm shaking with shock and frustration - she's so far away and all I want to do is get on a plane and go and hug my baby.
I'm on my way to Manchester as my mum goes into hospital for her cancer op today so I'm staying overnight at my sister's. The household is asleep and I've rarely missed my husband more than I do right now - he's in Newcastle and both his phones go straight to voicemail. sad

Thanks for the update ga. Preemie babies are amazing - such tiny scraps yet so resilient. 4lbs is quite a milestone and seems to bring with it lots of other positive changes. I hope she goes from strength to strength now........ And you, too! smile

sad I really don't know what to do with myself today. My granddaughter has been making really good progress then two days ago everything changed and today she's really very poorly again. She was beginning to breastfeed and had just come off breathing support and then she had an extreme reaction to some oral medication and is back to where she was a couple of weeks ago - only it seems to be a much more serious problem now. It's night time there and my daughter has left the hospital completely exhausted and just gone to bed, so there won't be any more news (I hope) until about 8pm our time when my daughter returns to the hospital. It's a constant nagging ache - I know that worrying doesn't help and I'm keeping myself busy and trying to divert my thoughts, but I feel so, so useless!!
Baby's gestational age is nearly 37 weeks now and many other preemies seem to be out of the woods by this stage, but for our little one it seems that every advance is followed by a setback. My daughter said that baby was crying a lot today; something that has rarely happened before and is breaking my daughter's heart. sad

The crying could be a good sign. If she has the energy to cry... flowers

I agree with Jings....crying can be a good sign, she's not unresponsive/sleeping all the time.i know it must be a constant roller coaster of emotions. Any chance of you going out there? It's probably worse for you as you're not on the spot to see for yourself. My young friend with the 24/5 week gestation preemie didn't hear her little one cry for weeks as she was intubated, on CPAP...all sorts of things. She welcomed her cry as it meant she was breathing just with oxygen. Perhaps it's not such a bad sign as you fear. Thinking of you all flowers

I reckon jings could be right. Whatever it means I really hope the wee one takes a giant step for the better very soon. Hope your poor daughter manages to get some sleep. You too.

I just had a middle of the night message to say the hospital hasn't rung, so no news is good news. smile
Yes, I had the same thought about the crying - that it might be a positive sign, but my daughter says not. Crying affects baby's heart rate and causes bradycardia and desaturation - she goes blue apparently. sad I'm just praying that she won't have to go back on assisted breathing because it seemed like such a huge step forward when she came off the CPAP/highflow.
I know from other days like this that in two more days she could be doing brilliantly, but for today it's fairly nerve-racking. Thanks for good wishes all.
