Anyone else doing Dry January.? Have given up my (almost) nightly glass or two. Easier than I thought it would be( it is only day 7 ). Don't feel miraculously better though.

kittylester Thu 08-Jan-15 07:25:40

No, but good luck Suzie.

We have too much going on at the moment to try to change our lifestyle. My glass of wine when cooking is one of life's small pleasures1

I went totally dry when I had my knee replaced because I was on pain killers. I used to drink a lot, far too much for my health. Now I drink very rarely and feel a lot better for it. Will it last ? I could easily slip back to a bottle at a time, will try not to.

Grannyknot Thu 08-Jan-15 08:32:11

I did it last year and continued way past January. I then went back to having an occasional glass of white wine. This year I've been ill since Boxing Day with a chest infection, so yes, I'm doing Dry January smile Best I sign up officially.

Has anyone seen the requests for sponsorship for a January 'Dryathlon'?
The word seems to be trying to convey some sort of athleticism.

Marmight Thu 08-Jan-15 09:06:28

Like Grannyknot I have been feeling c* * * since mid December and haven't felt like eating or, more importantly drinking! I haven't felt the benefits yet as I still feel very below par, but intend to continue once I am off the antibiotics. Not sure how long it will last as I can very easily be persuaded to accept a wine hmm

Oldgreymare Thu 08-Jan-15 09:23:14

I am!
Sorry to hear you are poorly Marmight hope you perk up soon.
I'm not sure whether or not I feel any better, I just wanted to prove to myself that I could do it........ sneaks away feeling sanctimonious.

I don't drink so all my months are dry lol

Teetime Thu 08-Jan-15 10:20:17

oooo no - the only reason I am able to do no sugar, cakes, biscuits, sweets, puddings, chocolate, cheese and minimal bread in January and February and proably March is knowing that I have two small (125mls) glasses of wine to look forward to with dinner.

Grannyknot Thu 08-Jan-15 10:23:19

teetime lol - why don't you just have one 250ml glass? grin

KatyK Thu 08-Jan-15 10:28:37

I'm with kitty. We are having a rotten time at the moment. The odd glass is helpful. I don't smoke, eat chocolate or cakes much, a glass or two helps with the stress. wine

tanith Thu 08-Jan-15 11:21:37

I'm with you vampirequeen I don't drink haven't for years and OH will have the odd glass of shandy and thats it.. I've never missed it but then I never really liked the taste .

ninathenana Thu 08-Jan-15 11:26:41

Don't need to, apart from a glass of bubbly with Christmas lunch and one at midnight on 31st I can't remember the last time I had alcohol.

That's not to say I don't enjoy a bottle few glasses occasionally.

Teetime Thu 08-Jan-15 12:04:22

I can eke out 2 small one for longer!

rubysong Thu 08-Jan-15 12:08:44

No!
I don't drink much and generally only at weekends but shall not be giving up. Maybe I'll give it up for lent but won't be asking anyone for sponsorship.

suzied Thu 08-Jan-15 14:04:25

I'm not asking for sponsorship - didn't know anyone was!. Just thought I'd do it to cut down on the calories and give the liver a rest.

janerowena Thu 08-Jan-15 14:21:16

We decided to cut back drastically about 7 years ago when our son started insinuating that we were alcoholics and that he was fed up with going to the bottle bank every week. I always thought he enjoyed smashing the bottles! blush

So we cut right back from one bottle lasting us two nights, (the other bottles were the two of beer that his dad would drink each night) until eventually we now have only one 125ml glass each a week, usually on a Friday night.

No, I am not prepared to give up that one glass. Not for anyone or anything. I really enjoy it! But don't feel any need for more.

I thought this was a thread about the weather.

I'm really not that bothered about alcohol. I don't much like spirits, and I can take wine or leave it, but I'll drink beer to be social. I'm not really that sociable any more though, so I haven't had any booze for yonks. Come to think of it, Adam's Ale must account for about 95% of what I drink.

Pittcity Thu 08-Jan-15 20:33:30

We are trying and doing quite well. DH has bottled all his home brew and it will actually get to mature for a few weeks this time.
One problem on the horizon is that we have arranged to host a wine tasting evening mid-month, so we won't be totally dry hmm

rosesarered Thu 08-Jan-15 22:53:37

Who can get through a month like January without a drink?

yogagran Thu 08-Jan-15 23:04:05

And February is not much better roses

Kiora Thu 08-Jan-15 23:40:45

Definitely no it's gin gin and more gin for me. Wine, whisky or brandy will do too. I don't drink that much, honestly I don't. It's one of the only adult things I still do. I often go months without alcohol. Mainly because I don't really think about it. If I have visitor or visit people or go out then I love a drink. I never think about having a drink after a stressful day at work or if I'm upset. I'm more likely to reach for chocolate, sweets, or cake. I really need to give them up. But give up alcohol never. I'm off up to visit my sister this weekend. I hope she's got the wine at the ready...YEHA wine and more wine

The thought passed fleetingly through my mind, but after a day of looking after an utterly delightful but exhausting DGD2 I found myself reaching for a bottle of white! Just the 1 largish glass then I saved the rest for us both for tonight.

Greyduster Fri 09-Jan-15 10:06:56

Well I thought I might until DD & co brought a very good bottle of champagne for lunch on Sunday. I had two glasses, and then yesterday I had a glass of sloe gin (for my chest infection, you understand - very comforting!). I'm not big drinker in any event - less and less the older I get.

loopylou Fri 09-Jan-15 10:19:54

I drink very little, and as I seemed to have lost my alcohol tolerance I rarely have more than half a glass- cheap to take out! grin
