Anyone else doing Dry January.? Have given up my (almost) nightly glass or two. Easier than I thought it would be( it is only day 7 ). Don't feel miraculously better though.

I'm with you suzied. I like a drink but the amount of people who seem to drink that thimbleful was giving me a complex! Of course, good luck to them and they are doing what they want to do and it is very sensible. I like to sit with a glass at night. Life in these parts is very stressful at the moment and we need something to help us unwind. I don't smoke and am healthy (touch wood). Well done Nonu and congratulations wine

I am glad there a few who enjoy a bottle or two, I was getting a bit concerned that all gransnetters were teetotal or only drank a thimbleful of sherry once a year. I am still doing dry January, it's ok but a bit boring and it's only day 12. Instead of sitting down with a nice chilled glass watching House of Cards, I now sit down with a bowl of crisps and a pint of orange juice and soda, so I don't think I'm saving much on the calories.

A friend cooked me a lovely roast lamb dinner tonight and we shared a bottle of Chardonnay that she had produced. Just as we were finishing it off, she suddenly remembered that she had bought a bottle of red to go with the lamb. Well, it would have been rude to refuse, wouldn't it? grin

Congratulations Nonu. It's our 44th this year too, 1971was a vintage year for weddings. I will toast you tomorrow - any excuse.

A glass of chilled Chablis is one of life's little pleasures. smile

We went out to lunch yesterday for our 44th wedding Anniversary had a superb and I mean Superb meal with a delightful bottle of Pinio Grigio
.
Then had a small siesta , after which we opened the Champagne, quaffed
and enjoyed, and reminisced about times gone by
.
THEN we opened another bottle of wine and just enjoyed.

So dry January has at the moment passed by this house.
sunshine

We did have a nice dinner with the wine!

Ana Sun 11-Jan-15 20:09:36

Lots of cases! shock Aren't there 12 bottles in a case? The mind boggles...

Stansgran Sun 11-Jan-15 20:04:59

Pittcity I sympathise. My unplanned visits to York generally involve spotty or snotty DGC and mean I clutch at my gin when I get home. DH had a significant birthday a few days ago and lots of cases of delectable wine winged there way here. We don't have much space so we either drink the stuff we've got in or the new lot. Decisions decisions.

Just got back from an unplanned weekend in York and succumbed to a nice bottle of red on Saturday night wine blush

I've just bought a beautiful set of crystal wine glasses from a charity shop, a real bargain. So I'll have to test them, won't I ? x

loopylou Fri 09-Jan-15 10:19:54

I drink very little, and as I seemed to have lost my alcohol tolerance I rarely have more than half a glass- cheap to take out! grin

Greyduster Fri 09-Jan-15 10:06:56

Well I thought I might until DD & co brought a very good bottle of champagne for lunch on Sunday. I had two glasses, and then yesterday I had a glass of sloe gin (for my chest infection, you understand - very comforting!). I'm not big drinker in any event - less and less the older I get.

rosequartz Fri 09-Jan-15 09:37:13

The thought passed fleetingly through my mind, but after a day of looking after an utterly delightful but exhausting DGD2 I found myself reaching for a bottle of white! Just the 1 largish glass then I saved the rest for us both for tonight.

Definitely no it's gin gin and more gin for me. Wine, whisky or brandy will do too. I don't drink that much, honestly I don't. It's one of the only adult things I still do. I often go months without alcohol. Mainly because I don't really think about it. If I have visitor or visit people or go out then I love a drink. I never think about having a drink after a stressful day at work or if I'm upset. I'm more likely to reach for chocolate, sweets, or cake. I really need to give them up. But give up alcohol never. I'm off up to visit my sister this weekend. I hope she's got the wine at the ready...YEHA wine and more wine

yogagran Thu 08-Jan-15 23:04:05

And February is not much better roses

rosesarered Thu 08-Jan-15 22:53:37

Who can get through a month like January without a drink?

Pittcity Thu 08-Jan-15 20:33:30

We are trying and doing quite well. DH has bottled all his home brew and it will actually get to mature for a few weeks this time.
One problem on the horizon is that we have arranged to host a wine tasting evening mid-month, so we won't be totally dry hmm

crun Thu 08-Jan-15 14:26:05

I thought this was a thread about the weather.

I'm really not that bothered about alcohol. I don't much like spirits, and I can take wine or leave it, but I'll drink beer to be social. I'm not really that sociable any more though, so I haven't had any booze for yonks. Come to think of it, Adam's Ale must account for about 95% of what I drink.

janerowena Thu 08-Jan-15 14:21:16

We decided to cut back drastically about 7 years ago when our son started insinuating that we were alcoholics and that he was fed up with going to the bottle bank every week. I always thought he enjoyed smashing the bottles! blush

So we cut right back from one bottle lasting us two nights, (the other bottles were the two of beer that his dad would drink each night) until eventually we now have only one 125ml glass each a week, usually on a Friday night.

No, I am not prepared to give up that one glass. Not for anyone or anything. I really enjoy it! But don't feel any need for more.

suzied Thu 08-Jan-15 14:04:25

I'm not asking for sponsorship - didn't know anyone was!. Just thought I'd do it to cut down on the calories and give the liver a rest.

rubysong Thu 08-Jan-15 12:08:44

No!
I don't drink much and generally only at weekends but shall not be giving up. Maybe I'll give it up for lent but won't be asking anyone for sponsorship.

Teetime Thu 08-Jan-15 12:04:22

I can eke out 2 small one for longer!
