and, after telling me how nice my hair looked, she said in a really exasperated voice, 'but why do you always insist on wearing big black macs - I keep telling you to wear colour!'

I love black but with two almost white dogs it's not very practical so I wear a lot of sludgy colours.

Country chic I think it's called grin

I think it's part of that old idea that you shouldn't praise your children too much because it will go to their heads. So having said your hair looked nice she had to say something critical otherwise you might get ideas about yourself. My mum is 92 and specialises in a whole range of put-downs. Including "Are you really going to have pudding? Well I suppose it won't make that much difference." (I am slightly overweight). "I've always liked you in that top, when did you buy it?" (OK it is getting on a bit). "When did you say you were getting your hair done?" (Just after it had been cut)
My sons think it is hilarious

I have the same problem Merlot. My Cat is off white and molts continually. I love wearing black or navy, but spend ages brushing off cat hairs.
Also embarrassing when having visitors!!
