I have just scrolled down the Christmas book thingy and amazed at all the grans there. Most I have never heard of, come on secret grans love to hear from you on our chat line!!!

Ana Sat 15-Nov-14 20:17:29

Don't be silly, ethel, I actually love your posts - I did tell you I liked you once, but you didn't seem very thrilled!

The 'Gah' was to myself for having made a mess of the grin in my previous post.

Ana Sat 15-Nov-14 20:22:15

(obviously I am not referring to your posts regarding the serious health issues you're facing at the moment, you have my sincere sympathy in that regard)

Galen Sat 15-Nov-14 20:28:22

Janerowena I'm the same!

rosequartz Sat 15-Nov-14 21:14:13

ethel Im a proper gran

Just wondering what a 'proper gran' is - I may be a gran but am I proper?
Or properly barmy? grin

I wonder what percentage of those lurkers are grandDADS, and who, like me, don't always feel that their input is particularly welcomed. I lurk here everyday and occassionally chip in when I feel that I have something relevant to add to the discussion - but I get so little response that even I am beginning to wonder if it is worth continuing.

Part of the problem is that a large proportion of threads unintentionally discriminate against men. A recent thread in Chat ("How to recognise a GNer") seriously suggested that anyone attending a meet-up should wear a scarf attached to their handbag. It might just as well have said "Oh and by the way, men aren't welcome".

I accept that some will think I am being hyper-sensitive, but remember that no-one likes to feel excluded. I am reminded of the time we went to the Caravan Show at the NEC a couple of years ago. There was a stand promoting Volvo Cars which had a 2-inch step all around it making it impossible for my wife (in a mobility scooter) to get into that area. I sought out the senior Volvo man there and complained and his reply to me was "It never occurred to us that any disabled person would want to come onto the stand". It's all about the mindset.

Hello lefthanded
I for one am glad you posted.
I have only just joined myself, so dont know what has gone on before.
Anyway, hi!

NfkDumpling Sat 15-Nov-14 22:21:19

Sorry Lefthanded I suppose the assumption is that the majority of Grans are women. We shouldn't do that. Perhaps we should add m or f to our names? Lefthandedm. NfkDumplingf. ???

NfkDumpling Sat 15-Nov-14 22:27:28

Hi Soontobe.

janerowena Sat 15-Nov-14 23:04:37

Nfkdumpling I too wish I knew which posters were males - yet if asked I would say that it should make no difference! On most boards there is a little symbol by the side of a name to show the gender. We could do with that on here. Also the name of the board does rather assume that we are all women - which we clearly are not.

It's good to have a male point of view. It can be very informative at times of great puzzlement. Men have said that they can't understand women for centuries. However I think it's just plain people that can't always be understood, and as for meetups, I have met up with some lovely male board members (not from here) over the years and they are now very good friends.

Galen perhaps we are best kept apart! grin

Did you ever see those sketches that French and Saunders used to do, of the two dreadful old countrywomen? We could be like that.

Ana Sat 15-Nov-14 23:20:42

Weren't they country men? confused One of them used to be always bonking the kitchen sink or something...

lefthanded Sat 15-Nov-14 23:20:55

If everybody filled in their profile giving their gender, the information would be available for anybody who wanted it.

janerowena Sat 15-Nov-14 23:27:18

I don't actually tend to look at profiles. I have a missing curiosity gene.

Ana they did women as well. I used to laugh, especially when people said no-one like that existed, because I have met a few!

granjo39 Sat 15-Nov-14 23:52:18

Hi Everybody,I joined Gransnet last May and still consider myself a newbie,I have posted once or twice but am a bit slow to put my foot in the water grin Yes I'm a genuine Gran (two lovely grandsons) I have been meaning to fill in my profile (next couple of days-promise-its a bit late tonight) I haven't looked at the competitions yet but do hope to participate in more threads in the future. I absolutely love this site.

ninathenana Sun 16-Nov-14 08:27:22

lefthanded
I sincerely apologize. I'm the one guilty of the handbag post. I tend to forget there are granDADS here and it's only right there should be.

Mmmm this humble pie is actually quiet tasty grin

jinglbellsfrocks Sun 16-Nov-14 08:55:47

Oh for goodness sake. Have we really got to apologise because a man has a hissy-fit? Come on!

And do we really want GN to continually cosy and sucking up?

jinglbellsfrocks Sun 16-Nov-14 08:58:10

I wonder if there are any posters on here now who visited from The Other Place and decided to stay. Which, of course, is fine. Just wondering.

pompa Sun 16-Nov-14 09:08:55

I lurk on most threads, but only comment on those where I either feel qualified, annoyed, affected or just want to add a little humour. Some days this may be many threads, others hardly any, but I certainly post most days. I think my posts make it pretty obvious which gender I am, if not my photos are a clue.
Of late, I have never felt excluded from any thread (ignored yes), this was not the case a year or so back, I left GN because there was open hostility against GD's. That is not the case any longer, I wish we had a few more GD's here so we could talk blokey stuff more often.

pompa Sun 16-Nov-14 09:11:20

And, I would not be bothered if it was necessary for me to tie a scarf to my handbag for a meet up. That would probably be my rugby scarf tied to a Tesco bag.

Agus Sun 16-Nov-14 09:14:54

lefthanded some people do not 'blue' their names for privacy reasons that being the reason we have the option to blue or not.

Had you wanted to go to a meet up, when putting your name forward, you could just have joked that as a man, you wouldn't be sporting a handbag that day grin

Iam64 Sun 16-Nov-14 09:19:50

I'm just back from a visit to the other place. It's so lively over there grin

jinglbellsfrocks Sun 16-Nov-14 09:23:16

You could use a windsock pompa. Make a good stand-in for a scarf.

jinglbellsfrocks Sun 16-Nov-14 09:24:34

And you had better make it a rucksack. Or a man bag.

kittylester Sun 16-Nov-14 09:40:09

To be fair Nina, didn't that thread also mention man bags? And, I think pompa contributed. Obviously, I could be thinking about a totally different thread!

It is always good to get lots of posts from different people and lots of us are ignored when we have posted - I know I am! I often get loads of support too.

pompa Sun 16-Nov-14 09:52:43

I doubt any of the GD's here were felt excluded by Nina's thread, I certainly wasn't. GD's are in the minority, so there are bound to be a significant number of threads that are female orientated. Even when I have contributed ???? to a female thread there has not been much backlash. (Leggings for example) I think there was only one GNer that said I should keep my opinions on female matters to myself, which as I consider myself well qualified to comment on ladies legs, I ignored smile

whitewave Sun 16-Nov-14 09:59:56

Are you a "leg man" then pompa?
