My DH is prone to the odd session of 'sleep walking' When in this 'mode' he tends to speak very precisely and matter of fact. He fell asleep on the sofa the other evening, I woke him to say he maybe should go to bed. He promptly fell asleep again. Then sat up and said (very precisely) I want to know where my other notebook is!' I replied 'What notebook is that?' 'Well you know that I have one for my Natural History notes?' 'Yes' I said, 'Well, I have another one in which I note down the wheel measurement of bikes.' 'Oh!' says I, 'And which bikes are these' 'You know I read the cycling magazines from time to time? well I like to record the measurement of the wheels in the Tour de France' - me ' Oh for goodness sake wake up and go to bed you silly bugger.'
He dropped off to sleep for a few minutes then sat up and I said 'where are you going' 'To bed of course' (normal voice)
It gets better worse About 2am he got out of bed and stood leaning against the wall by the door, hand on hip and his legs crossed at ankle. I could see him in the moonlight (unfortunately) 'What on earth are you doing now?' 'Waiting for the driver, he said he would be back soon!!!' (very precise of course) 'What driver?' 'The coach driver of course, he went and has not returned yet' Me 'Where's the coach?' DH 'I'm leaning on it, can't you see?' I put the light on and there he was leaning on the 'coach' waiting for a non existent driver. I just sat and waited for his eyes to unglaze. Got fed up with waiting and put my light off saying 'I'm going to sleep you silly bugger there's not bloody coach and I am tired' A couple of seconds later I heard his slide the door (we have a sliding door in the bedroom) 'Where are you going now?' DH (normal voice) to the toilet of course.

The tale of the lost driver in the middle of the night and the non existent notebook.
(26 Posts)nb I adore him and this never happens when he is awake, he is a normal and functioning human being. He would be mortified if he ever thought I told his tales. Mind you when I tell him what he has been up to in his sleep he replies 'Another one for Gransnet then'
Oh well.
So long as he's not tired because of it, during the day, I guess I wouldn't worry.
I used to have a manager who walked in his sleep. He would go downstairs and do little jobs he had been working on. He would change plugs etc. His wife was quite happy with this.
Not quite the same as sleepwalking, but when Mr Purple was in hospital post stroke and somewhat lala he assured us that they rang a bell in the middle of the night and all the patients were weighed automatically in their beds. He was so plausible we actually asked a nurse who obviously thought we were the lala ones
I sometimes sleepwalk on the first night in strange bed. On my wedding night I got into the wardrobe looking for the toilet! Fortunately I didn't 'go'!
purpledaff I know just what you mean. My DH was in ICU for several weeks following a cardiac arrest and pneumonia. He also suffered ICU Hallucinations. Rabbits on nurses heads, snakes appearing through windows, Kiwis on the desk, Trains appearing out of the floor, a beach and sea out of the hospital window. A 'lovely pair of legs' which he wrote on a piece of paper for me to see (he had a trachy so couldn't speak) I burst into tears thinking that he had turned into a 'dirty old man' with brain damage (I was warned that he could have suffered some - luckily he hasn't) I thought he was talking about the nurses. It turned out that he was talking about a mannequin which he 'saw' lying on the floor.
Coming around from a big operation my mum was on morphine and became convinced that there were coloured monkeys jumping around the equipment in the room. She kept putting her had out to them offering them (non existant)tit bits of food saying "here little monkey, come on, I won't hurt you"
DH has always talked in his sleep and is particularly bad if he is stressing about something at work. A few weeks ago I was awakened by kicks in the ankles and DH shouting "stop it, get off, leave me alone" it turned out that he was dreaming about being attacked by a dog
charming.
When i had my heart valve replacement op, i had the most amazing hallucinations, I was watching the TV I thought,, it was not on. at one point Princess Di and Charles were waving to me from the wall, and me not even a royalist.
I was told by the surgeon that I was lucky as some people had awful nightmare ones, but they did not tell people in advance as it doesn't always happen, I was still seeing pink balloons on the wall in my bedroom when I got home !!!!!!!
My first ex used to sleep walk often. Before we were married he got up one night and dismantled his parents tv set!
One morning I got up for work to find the (plastic) curtain rail, complete with curtains, folded in half over a chair!
Our ds also was very active during the night and I once found him crouching in terror on top of a set of drawers, convinced something was out to get him.
My EX didn't sleepwalk but he drunk walked one night into the wardrobe and he DID go.
Ex SiL sleep walks quiet often. I have seen him come downstairs naked to get a drink from the fridge
he was in completely denial the next morning.
Once when he was staying at ours I got up, to make breakfast and found a large knife standing embedded in the chopping board
Thanks felice, I have to have a heart valve replacement op in the future so you've really cheered me up!
My son talks in his sleep which is very funny. I have warned him though for when he will be with a girlfriend so that he doesn't say another's name!
When I had 'flu once. I woke DH in the wee hours to tell him there were two men sitting in a corner of the bedroom.they were sitting at a table with a striped umbrella eating white black pudding?
Sorry, but these are really making me
!
F--- Nina! That would have been worrying! (The knife, not the naked sil)
Although...
DD used to sit bolt upright in bed and start talking when she was a child. She never had any memory of it next day. Her DS goes one better and sometimes sleep walks as well. He has twice been found peeing in the laundry basket while fast asleep - she wasn't impressed
When DH was in hospital after a stem cell transplant he had fantastic hallucinations. He used to phone me and describe trees growing out of the floor. He said he found himself talking to people who weren't there although part of his brain knew they weren't there.
I used to sleepwalk when I was a child and DM found me on the dressing table once, trying to climb up the mirror. I don't think I do it any more.
I saw a programme about people who could not lose weight even though they tried. They were filmed going down to the kitchen in the night and eating, but were still fast asleep. (Apparently)
Many years ago after a boozy night out, DH did a pee in the china cabinet. I discovered the door of the cabinet had been left open and a suspicious liquid in the cups on the bottom shelf...
. He blamed the (female) babysitter.
The disorder is known as ICU psychosis. Apparently it's caused by being in one environment, drugs and all of the different noises surrounding the sick person. DH once told me that 'There are people creeping about here at night'
'Of course there are, they are the nurses' I said unsympathetically not realising that he was seeing things. They now introduce a diary for ICU patients so that lots of the strange noises and treatments they receive but cannot remember can be explained to them on leaving hospital. Also my DH cannot remember anything about being in ICU (mind you he was under sedation for nearly 4 weeks) but can remember all of the hallucinations.
I have been a sleepwalker all my life. My mother said I used to get distressed because I was unable to get through a door but in fact I was trying to get through the mirror. My parents used to find me sitting in the bath or on the wash basin and as I got older I used to climb on furniture. It was not so frequent as I got older but if under stress I would find myself in other parts of the house, sometimes curled up on the floor of the living room, obviously waking when I got chilled. When DH worked away from home for 16 years I was worried about leaving the house in my sleep so always wore substantial nightwear and made sure a neighbour had a key so I could get back in. Since DH retired everything seems to have settled down and my night wanderings are limited to frequent bathroom visits.
Ex used to sleepwalk, I wish someone had warned me. I got such a shock when we had been married a short while and he wee'd in the wardrobe. He seemed completely lucid and I was getting so angry with him! He was frequently convinced that someone was under the bed. His mother used to tell him to be good and stay in bed as a child or the bogeyman under the bed would get him... Delightful. She lived to regret that one.
When I asked her about it, she said that she had hoped that sharing a bed with someone would put a stop to it, and then told me about how she once held a dinner party and Ex aged 9 appeared in the doorway, walked across the room and wee'd in the logbasket.
One of my DS used to get very drunk and used to pee on his sister's bed and on his little brother's chair, I caught him one night trying to get into the airing cupboard for a wee. We cured him with threats and the old trick of my DH wetting a toothbrush, standing by DS's bed, sprinkling water over his face, as he woke up DH then turned and walked out of the room pretending to fasten his trousers. DS didn't see the funny side but a strict talk of the dangers of drinking too much seemed to cure him. He did see the funny side later.
