Have you been insulted this week?

Oh dear gilly but from reading other threads on here you must know you are far from being on your own. My Mum is long dead but I lived with just the same attitude from her.A compliment would have "floored"me.I do TRY to remember with my own DCand DGC.

I'm glad your question wasn't related to posts on GN Gilly or world war 3 would have started, forget Russia and Ukraine.

Poor you. The thing is you can see the humorous side to life so that counts for more than what you look like. Personality is more beautiful than looks any day.

Even if you are a 'tatty head', like myself.

A compliment from my now late MIL would never have been forthcoming but she took the biscuit when she said just afew days after the birth of DD,"how two ugly so and so's could have such a beautiful child is beyond me !! " she certainly knew how to make friends and influence people did that woman.

Gilly your Grandma's remarks remind me of a friend's experience when as a district nurse she visited a patient who was bed-bound. A piece of equipment she was holding slipped and as it flew across the room she somehow managed to leap with outstretched arm and catch it.

The patient said "I tell you what girl, for the size of ya, ya can't half move!"

I know it sounds a bit pathetic (at my age) but my mum continously showers my younger sister with compliments whereas I tend to get insults, some of which can be quite hurtful. A compliment from my mum would "floor me" too annsixty although I do try and laugh things off, especially with my grandma as she insults just about everyone so that probably doesn't count.

That sounds exactly like something my grandma would say River and she wouldn't give a second thought to how hurtful it might be.

I haven't been insulted this week[or last week] perhaps I should get out more.

Yes - by a stranger on the phone. It was one of those usual calls telling me to claim PPI. So instead of hanging up, I thought I would play along. She kept saying they had all the details just needed to know bank I had taken the loan out with for a new car. I laughed and said I have never taken out a loan for a new car. She then said - house improvements. I said 'no' She said she was being serious. I said which bank. She said she would get her manager to talk to me. He came on the phone and started to go through the thing again. I again asked the question which bank. He was getting cross by now and started to make a very rude suggestion what I could do. I then hung up, laughing. I shouldn't have wasted my time, but couldn't resist.

My son-in-law mentioned to my daughter that he was glad she hadn't inherited my OCD about tidiness and cleaning not too sure if I should be the one to feel insulted. My late Mother never had a compliment for me quite the reverse felt able to remark upon my appearance in a less than flattering manner at all times .However never heard her do the same to my elder sister. Fortunately never gave me a complex I do try very hard to only compliment both of my daughters and save all critical remarks for my husband!

I weighed only 5lbs 4oz when I was born, and apparently my paternal grandfather took one look at me and said to my mother 'That'll never live, girl!'

Thank you jane Good job we are not meeting up any time soon though as it's looking a little "the worse for wear" at the minute. Or am I just being paranoid?

"That'll never live" sounds like he was referring to the runt of the litter jane, mind you my son and daughter were both born around the 5lb mark and resembled skinned rabbits (well, according to my darling grandma they did anyway)

No insults this week so far but I remember a family occasion when my 81 year old spinster Aunt looked at my cousin's recently born baby (her great nephew) and exclaimed very loudly 'It's a very ugly little thing, isn't it?'

Gilly I wonder if they had had a conversation about you and were worried about you in some way and it came out wrongly? Why should you dress up to go and see them? They are family. When you have a busy life you don't bother around those who should not be looking at your appearance but at the inner you. My mother would not have noticed what I looked like, I was the one she liked least. She was always telling me how wonderful the others were!

Can't remember the last time I was insulted by anyone other than DH who doesn't know he is doing it! He recently said something short but hurtful for the umpteenth time and I finally complained. He then explained what he really meant which wasn't at all insulting.

I only come on here to be insulted.

In the 'real world' I might be lulled into thinking I'm a nice easy going person.

I very much doubt they had had a conversation about me Nonnie and I double doubt they are worried about me (I am the one who does the worrying). In my family it is always assumed that I am "doing just great" . I don't dress up to visit family but neither do I visit them dressed in my gardening clothes (if you know what I mean).

I get that from my mum too. My sister can do no wrong. She is like Mary bloody Poppins "practically perfect in every way". I am not bitter

A few years ago when I was still at work, my colleague and myself both came to work in black coats. She decided she was cold and took 'her' coat from the stand and put it on. 'Oh no', she said at the top of her voice. 'I've put your coat on by mistake, it's so big I look like a clown'. I was not even a pound overweight then, but she was tiny and considered anyone who was over a size 10 to be obese.

gilly - your last post made me laugh. I'm sure you look lovely. Be grateful for your hair - mine has long gone. I too am not (very) bitter!

To those of you who are often insulted by your relatives, have you ever asked them why you are so rude to you? What was their reaction if you have ? If you haven't asked them , I wonder why.

Made me laugh gillybob.....dont get too many insults luckily, but my Grandad was the master of the unintentional insult as in ( to my cousin) ' You dont look anything like your mother........she is such a pretty girl'

Not insulted this week but a friend asks every birthday "how old" ? when I say the age she will reply "you don't look it but I expect you did once"

My Mother would say even when I was dressed up for an award ceremony or big function always was, 'I dont know why you bother, no one is going to look at you anyway', even if I was getting an award.
