Guy coming to clean carpets at 10am so I have a few very dusty corners and under sofas to clear out. Including the place where I found an extremely faded Christmas card. I hope it was only from last year.

Been awake since 6.30, finished a book I was reading. Unsettled as the book destroyed an illusion! I had always been a huge fan of Bruce Chatwin's work, this was a biography, turns out he was not a very nice person!!!
Coffee and Gransnet, already told bagitha to batten down the hatches, on another thread. Same goes for all Gransnetters North of the border.

Back in the day, if shows were on twice, the afternoon performance was a 'watered down' version of the much 'bluer' evening show. Hence one always took the grandchildren to the matinee !!!!

I'm up! Flew back up from the deep South late last night - luckily before the winds were really bad; had a lovely long sleep in my own bed (last few nights in my Aunts' wee single bed which must be at least 60 years old!) and now I am about to catch up on 5 days of GN news.............

Oldgreymare, it had to be daytime sleaze, 'cos we were only doing it once, ie for the Xmas party!

I ate too much afterwards - when you tell people of our generation to 'bring a plate' most of us bring too much. It was all lovely too. I made mince pies and jam tarts, but someone made quiche, and someone else brought loads of cheeses.....

The wind is not too bad yet, but we are in the lea of a hill which should give us a little protection. Mini-Baggy's school is open this morning because it is the school xmas lunch day and the cook would have had a fit if it had been cancelled! They are closing straight after lunch though. The high school, which sits on a west-facing coast and will be in the teeth of the gale has not opened at all today. Even in 'normal' weather it is very exposed to everything the Atlantic throws at us.

Jess it was more shameful than I thought. First time most of the furniture has been shifted sinced I moved in 4 years ago. Apart from lots of model cars/dinosaurs/soldiers, I found...

half a jammy dodger
a broken emery board
a wine cork (only one????!!!!!)
an crumpled paper hat from last year's Christmas crackers
enough dust bunnies to film a sequel to Watership Down
Carpet man will be here in half an hour, so I'll soon be all clean and serene.
But still ashamed.

THE WIND is BLOWING so ferociously that I doubt we'll make the trip into Tarbert to the dentist...last day of treatment for a while. The waves are ENORMOUS and the sound of them breaking on the shore is deafening.The cherry tree is clinging to the sodden ground. The birds appear to be unable to fly. The cat sits deep within his cosy apartment. I hope to return soon...that's if the power isn't cut. Kepp warm. Keep safe.

bags, super, thinking of you. It sounds as if you are getting everything the weather can throw at you. I like a good gale (brought up on the Firth of Clyde) but sometimes it goes too far and this seems to be one of those times. Good luck. Keep cosy.

Gosh you lot do get up early! Notso how exciting finding all those things - last time I looked under the cats favourite chair I found a pair of washing-up gloves, plastic lid, several leaves and a shrivelled baby frog! The delights of owning 2 rescue cats. I won't tell you about the time they hid an enormous rat (dead fortunately) under the chair.

notso you should be proud that you have the good sense not to fritter away your life cleaning under furniture.
We lifted a carpet in a house I once inhabited and found several pressed lizards. Just wee ones. I think they had crept in via air bricks or something. No cat - and even if I did have, how would cat get under the carpet? Creates an interesting image though doesn't it.

Glad it went well Joan . I survived the intro and thanks at the end. Apart from the requirement to use a microphone and hold it close. Lots of home grown entertainment. Volunteers did a nice but light tea. Yes the bring a plate phenomenon is familiar. No-one looks at the plate and thinks - does this represent the total amount I will personally eat? They all bring enough for six.
I am going to a family lunch party on the train on Saturday. Transportable savouries...mmm. I am dithering between a/ make macaroni cheese the day before that will set like a stone for transit. b/ go to marks and spencer next to the railway station and buy some meat and dips. Must remember to apply the test. I am not feeling at all domestic goddessy this week so may well settle for b. So there.

Notso - a woman after my own heart. Two of my GC and their parents are visiting briefly this weekend and I am still finding bits of Lego (usually underfoot) from their last visit. I do look under the sofa occasionally, after an invasion of bluebottles, some years ago. More and more seemed to be emerging from somewhere and I eventually tracked them down to underneath the living room sofa. Hundreds of maggots. A few must have over-wintered there and decided to breed. Never again!

We found a pressed and dried mouse under a carpet once. I took it to school and gave it to my biology teacher who used it as a bookmark.

Eeuuuuugh!
