What was the first record you ever bought?

Oh I longed to be able to wear things like that, but I was too young to pick my own, and my mum was quite conservative.
I had to have my hair short until I was about 10.
I'd just grown it and I had to have it cut into a 'pageboy' ready for seniour school.
Why can I suddenly not spell senior?!

An LP with the Mendelssohn violin concerto on one side, and the Bruch on the other. On the cover was Yehudi Menuhin. I can see it in my mind's eye now.

I went to a concert at Southampton guildhall (terrible acoustics) to see Trex. Marc Bolan threw lots of plectrums out into the crowd and I caught one.
Omg I saw lots of groups at Portsmouth guildhall only because my older brother was going.

We had a thread on this subject some years ago and when this one came up I was instantly reminded of feetlebaum
Does anyone else remember him.?
I think he had been a musician and when I said my first record buy was Songs for Swinging Lovers by Frank Sinatra he posted agreeing with my post.
I think he died (feetlebaum) very suddenly and was missed by the GNers of that time.

Not sure if mine was an Adam Faith one or a Freddie and the Dreamers one. Can't recall how much it cost and it was probably bought around the start of the 1960s.

The wonder of you by Elvis and In the summer time by Mungo Gerry spring to mind. Then went on to Tamla Motown and Reggie music.

A Bridge over troubled water LP by Simon and Garfunkel. £1/19/11 in about 1972. Still love it and listen to it. The second was American Pie by Don McLean.

Can’t remember, but v likely She Loves You. 6/8d was the price of a single back in the Very Olden Days.

One I really wanted to buy but never had the 6/8d for, was Telstar. Asked for it for Christmas, but evidently nobody was listening. ?

It was 1968, I was almost fifteen I think, and went into Woolworths after school clutching a ten shilling note. I must have saved pocket money, or dinner money , anyhoo I bought Albatross by Fleetwood Mac and played it on my Dansette over and over again.

Tony Steele singing “Singing the Blues” and Cliff Richards “Living Doll” which my brother played again and again.

I bought Catch the wind by Donovan with first wage packet in 1967 and would have played it on brothers Dansette player

Lets Dance by Chris Montez in 1962 cost about 6 shillings then most of my pocket money which I had saved.
Then all the Beatle's singles as they where released still got them now in the loft somewhere.

Bad Penny Blues by Humphrey Littleton, I was a trad jazz fan in the late fifties.

Glenn Miller, after seeing the film in 1953 I bought "String of Pearls" and "Little Brown Jug". I had a second hand, old wind up gramophone player and had to change the little brass needles every so often. It was old fashioned, even for those days.

Pentecost Hotel by Nirvana 1967. Think I was the only buyer! Still love it.
I still love 60s music and listen to Tony Blavkburn Sounds of the Sixties on Saturday morning.

Children of the Revolution, by T-Rex, 1972. I was 9/10 years old. It cost about 50p.

Thanks all for your memories. Its been a lot of fun to read them all. I remember so many of the songs and performers. I listened to my mother's and grandmother's records a lot as I really loved music.

The musical range of years illustrates our wide age range.
It’s rather nice to have all that lived experience.
