What discounts /reductions for 60+?

Well if you live in one of the 33 London Boroughs the big one is a free Oyster Card - worth its weight in gold!

Off the top of my head, all I can think of is the cinema (unfortunately, not most theatres)

B & Q on Wednesday you get 10% discount with their card, and yes the Freedome Pass in London boroughs lets you travel on tube and bus and some British Rail trains that run into London for free.
Can't think of anything else but it pays to ask for a discount wherever you shop.

Specsavers offer a good discount for over 60s.

Free prescriptions.

Boots loyalty card do discounts for Boots products, I've just saved 25% on a new pair of glasses, I think you get 10% off their own-brand products.

Cinema & theatre ticket reductions, lower admission prices to tourist venues. Pensioner fish and chip suppers!

A lot of hairdressers do a pensioner discount, though mine only offers for over 65. Adult education offers a discount for pensioners varying in different areas, often only for those on pension credit. Some restaurants and pubs offer pensioners discounts midweek lunchtime. There's a senior railcard for over 60s. Many places are now raising their 60+ offers to 65+.
I've just discovered my local council offers a handyperson service to over 60s to help with small repairs at home, even changing light bulbs. Other councils may do this.

If in doubt....ask, it's always worth it.There aren't many benefits to being over 60/65 but concessions is one of them.

Our local chippy does pensioner's fish and chips at lunchtime - although I'm always a bit miffed that they don't query my age when I order it! The leisure centre does cheap rates for over 60's. Hairdressers usually offer a discount too. I recently rang our electricity supplier to give them a meter reading and the chap I was talking to mentioned that as pensioners we would be a priority if there was a power cut. He asked if we had any medical problems and, when I said that DH is diabetic, he made a note of it so that if there was a prolonged cut we would be provided with a generator so that the fridge could be kept running for his insulin.

As an over 60, I get discounts on exercise classes locally e.g. Pilates is only £4 a class. My local authority has free exercise activities for the over 60s - a lovely walking group. So check out your local council page.

Just wondering why you are asking about discounts waldorfgrosi ? You say you are both working. Are you on minimum wage ? On the bones of your backside? Struggling to pay the gas and electric?

That seems a bit harsh gillybob, The Op is as entitled to any pensioner discounts as anyone else. to my knowledge they are not means tested.

Apologies if it came out harsh (I'm in a bit of a bad mood lately) it wasn't meant too. I just wondered why anyone would be searching for age related discounts if they were financially okay and working too. Are you a "pensioner" at 60 these days?

Yes, a lot of discounts still do start at 60 Gilly and everybody should take advantage of them if they are offered. My DH is working at the moment ( he does, on and off) and he is 70, but still has his concessions at the barber, cinema etc.

Moving on . Why not just ask "do you do over 60 discount?" Everywhere and then if they say yes it's a bonus to you and if not there is nothing lost.

Our local cineworld and council run cinema give discounts as do many theatres.

Oh dear , the last thing I wanted to do was upset you gillybob I know just how upset you are and why. I get very cross with certain threads myself these days as my own life does not run on oiled wheels but I just keep off them.

Just had all this with GDs (5&7) who were staying overnight ...is it something in the air??

I don't want a discount, I just want to get my state pension that I have paid for instead of working for the next six years. I look after my demented mother, support my daughter (emotionally not financially) and want to spend time with my granddaughter too. My husband and I (!! we are posh ) wonder when it will be our time.
