In Roker by the beach we once saw a small stone that was obviously painted by a child and possibly in memory of their Dad.

I don't paint mine, I either cover them with glitter, or use permanent marker pens of different colours. I get through a lot of super glue, which makes them shine.

Wouldn't PVA glue be cheaper and have the same effect?

Pva does have the tendency to peel off though.

Maybe some sort of resin would have the same effect?

I found a painted stone about a month ago and posted on Norfolk Rocks FB site (they put details on back of stone). They ask you to either keep it or hide it somewhere else. So I am taking it to Ibiza next week to help it on its travels.

The first time I saw some painted stones was on a wall in the Peak District and I was captivated by them.I started painting them and hiding them for my grandchildren. And, given that nothing grows in my garden because of the trees, I paint stones to add a bit of colour in the garden. I spray them with paint, draw on them with Sharpie pens and then spray with varnish.

Glitter isn’t very environmentally friendly.

I used to do a lot of these - mostly birds and animals - and give them away, but this is the only one I kept and it fell off the bookcase recently and is now held together with cling film because I can’t bear to throw it out! It’s also done on chalk and chalk flakes eventually. You live and learn.

We found that acrylic pens are easiest to use.

You can paint a background colour first if you want but the pens go on just like acrylic paint. Much easier for little ones.

I've ordered some acrylic pens and my minded children are really looking forward to trying this activity, which is new to us but something I've wanted to try for a while.
One 6 year old found a perfect smooth stone in the path yesterday while we were out in the woods. We had to dig it out with my radar key 😁
