easter eggs

Just because Easter Eggs are on sale early, it doesn't mean that people buy more than otherwise. I will be buying DD an Easter Egg this weekend because I will be seeing her next week but will then not see her until after Easter. I have done the same with DGC, taking Easter Egs up to teir parents for them in mid-February.

I like the flexibility buying Easter Eggs early gives me, but I do not buy more.
Does anyone eat Easter Eggs before Easter Sunday?

I tried to buy a box of Mother's Day chocolates from Tesco last Thursday only to have them substituted for a box of Thorntons, wrapped up in gold paper, very nice but with a tear on and a pen mark. Ok for me but if I was giving them as a present. I was looking forward to the others though as they looked pretty and were all truffles. As it was the Thorntons contained nuts, which I cannot eat.

I would have refused them, but then that would have been silly.

As with anything, the earlier you can buy then you can get some bargains! Closer to the date then prices go up. Just a fact of marketing and stock levels I'm afraid. We have an annual Easter egg hunt for my 5 kids and 2 grandkids and its such fun. But can be expensive if you don't spread the cost and buy when on offer. Currently Tesco do £1.50 medium eggs 4 for £3 ie 75p each, cheaper than the small ones! If you can't resist them in the house then ask a friend to look after them lol����������

January 2nd hot cross buns on sale at Co-op in the "Seasonal" aisle. January 9th Easter Biscuits in at Sainsburys. Next week.... buckets and spades or Halloween goods?

I don't usually find it's a problem with UK grown stuff. Stuff that's been flown half round the world is another matter. I reckon they suffer from culture shock ;)

thatbags have you never bought fruit which are rock hard when bought- and then just go bad as you try to ripen them at home? Or taste of absolutely nothing if eaten in between?

My DH would happily live on hot cross buns I think. He likes plain spicy fruit buns too, but I think hot cross ones do taste subtly different.

Juliette - election confectionery? Now there's a thought. ga, I wonder if your DH would feel the same about HCB if they didn't have the little pastry cross on top and were just spiced buns.

My husband travels a lot and so often can't eat at set times during the day. His answer to this is to buy hot cross buns to keep in the car alongside his 'emergency' packet of digestives. He loves HCB all year round and is delighted they no longer put in an appearance only for Easter.

......and don't forget the election. Not edible but even so it's going to be a long five months.

Well, hate is not the right word, agreed.

But I do feel it is such a shame we've lost the right to best ripe fruit and veg in season, and special foods like the ones mentioned above, reserved for special times and traditions- because this is what made them so enjoyable and 'special'. And feel aggrieve by the over commercialisation of all festivals and tradtions- perhaps even more Halloween.

Hot Cross buns available in all the Supermarkets this week,same as Easter Eggs and Valentine Gifts.

ethel I really do hate this too! Christmas that starts in August, Easter in January, Valentine's day, Mother's day, Father's day, any excuse and constant sell, sell, sell.

Easter eggs, hot-cross buns, mincepies- etc- have totally lost their special seasonal appeal by being on sale year round. And don't get me started on strawberries! grrrr

I am guilty of being tempted ! I bought a pack of mini Creme Egg ice cream cones from the Co-op. Not many calories, and DGCs (and I) love them. The proper Creme Eggs are too sickly for me, but these are much lighter.

NotTooOld In the old days weren't daffodils referred to as Lent Lillie's? I seem to remember my Grandmother calling them this.

numberplease my Dad's local butcher sells something he calls a Christmas pie all year round, they are very popular. They consist of a pastry case filled with turkey and gravy, topped with mashed potato, crispy bacon and cranberry sauce. They're yummy.

I went back to work on 27/12/14 and the first wagon that delivered to Waitrose was bringing Easter Eggs. I couldn't believe my eyes. Way too early in my opinion.

Mince pies are another matter, we eat them all year round, and my favourite bakery, Curtis`s, make them all the time, just like home made.

The supermarkets have had bunches of daffodils for sale since way before Christmas. I do object to that. I like to see daffodils as the harbingers of spring at the end of February - not at the beginning of November! Doh.

There have been Hot Cross Buns in Waitrose all year, as far as I know, though I wouldn't dream of buying them. There's a small bakery in Cheadle Hulme that makes the best ever HCBs and only sells them in Holy Week.
