Well I am an addict and proud of it! Love it all even the boring bits and now love Ambridge Extra.......I believe I am not alone either????

Gracesgran Wed 24-Sept-14 11:34:45

He may not be a bad person but he is very unreconstructed for someone of his age. Am I being a bit weird in worrying what his relationship with Henry will actually be?

Iam64 Wed 24-Sept-14 13:16:05

No, you aren't gracesgran, my feeling it he's keen to develop a special relationship with Henry, one in which men are good and brave, and women just a bit silly. grin

Standing by for another large basinfull of steaming passion in the morning down on the farm. Will it all end in tears?

Ode to Mungo

'Twas on a bright and sparkly morn
To celebrate that he was born
That Leony his doting mum
Decided homeward they would come
To Linda's verdant country pad
To name the lad, and all be glad
With guide-parents(?) and assorted mummies
They gathered clutching gifts and dummies
To celebrate his special name
That was the object of the game
To gasps of pleasure
That all would treasure
Little Mungo took his place
Never again to show his face
(I hope!)

Well done Papaoscar you could be our equivalent of Pam Ayres on Gransnet. smile

Baffled by the Archers yet again. Would an American gospel song (Bringing in the Sheaves) really have been a favourite of Doris Archer's?

Maggiemaybe Sun 12-Oct-14 12:02:33

I was convinced we used to sing it at Sunday School, then my DH said he'd only heard it on westerns and The Little House on the Prairie and I now think that is where I know it from. Perhaps Doris used to enjoy a good cowboy film too? grin

Galen Sun 12-Oct-14 12:21:12

Who was Doris' husband? Was it Dan?

sparkygran Sun 12-Oct-14 12:50:33

Yes Galen Dan`s the man. Doris and Dan were the original couple in the series. Good point about Bringing in the Sheaves grumppa didn`t spot that one

merlotgran Sun 12-Oct-14 13:02:06

Doris and Dan......Those were the days.

Ruth had better not drag the lovely David up to Prudhoe or she'll have me to answer to. angry

grumppa Sun 12-Oct-14 13:04:46

What didn't I spot? Mind you, the tune is very similar to Brennan on the Moor. Perhaps Doris was into Irish highwaymen.

Galen Sun 12-Oct-14 13:42:33

I met Dan Archer once at a GP friend of mines funeral. He was a charming man in real life.

Gracesgran Sun 12-Oct-14 13:52:04

Bringing in the Sheaves was written in 1874 so I can well imagine it was used in Protestant Churches - particularly Methodist ones as they love a good sing - in this country.

Ambridge church has never seemed very "high" to me and when Doris was young it would just have been the church of a small farming village so I can imagine it could have been used in the church services she attended.

Doris was played by Gwen Berryman. When I was about 8 I presented a bouquet to Harry Oakes wife (he was opening a Scout fete) and was quite surprised to find she wasn't Doris Archer smile

Am I hearing things or is Charlie finally making a play for Adam?

Would David really consider moving to Northumberland? seems very unlikely to me, what would happen when frail MIL pops her clogs?

What has happened to Jess n Rob storyline? are the writers dragging it out?
hmm...

Mishap Sun 12-Oct-14 15:43:04

I also think the move up north storyline is very flimsy. It makes no sense at all.

Nelliemoser Sun 12-Oct-14 16:21:36

suzied Charlie did tell Adam he fancied him.

I did enjoy Pat Archers feminist rant at Helen and Tony That was so Pat. I would not have expected anything else from her.

That "American" folk song could have easily have been in use over here as well. I would be very hesitant about where that originated. Folk songs and tunes travel all over the place.

Icannot see Ruth and David moving to Prudhoe or Mike Tucker really wanting to move to Birmingham.
I am quite sure rural Borsetshire must have have proper educational facilities for children with special needs. I wonder if Borsetshire council has website.

It has a map.

Case study: Shared services IT project - Practical Law

"Borset City Council wants to outsource its IT function. Its neighbouring authority, Borsetshire County Council, is thinking of doing the same thing. Both councils ..."
Told you so. wink

So poor old Hayley packs her trunk and says goodbye to the circus. Will Roy now whip out his tent again and seek to regain his former position with Elizabeth? Who would be on top this time? Who will be the next celebrity to turn up in Ambridge? Where is Prudhoe? Where are Jennifer and Brian? Has Jazzer gone off to join the SNP? Are they all leaving to avoid getting dragged in to Linda's next Christmas production? I think we need to know!

littleflo Sun 12-Oct-14 16:33:26

Great an Archers thread. I don't listen anymore, but heard a snippet regarding Ruth and David moving. Please, please can someone, briefly, fill me in on the background

merlotgran Sun 12-Oct-14 16:44:12

Have a look at the Archers website, littleflo and all will be revealed.

The David/Ruth/Prudhoe storyline can easily be resolved by killing off Heather. Expect a phone call any day.

littleflo Sun 12-Oct-14 17:34:11

Thanks Merlotgran. I must be dense have spent the last 10 mins searching but could not see an explanation of the story line.

GrannyTwice Sun 12-Oct-14 17:54:16

Littleflo- there are 2 strands to the Ruth/David story - one is a proposed new road which would negatively affect Brookfield and change the nature of the farm and the second is Ruth's mum's fall and her resultant poor health . The two together have resulted in the completely unbelievable storyline of a plan to move oop North - as if! I'm with Merlot regarding the imminent demise of Heather

merlotgran Sun 12-Oct-14 17:54:43

Sorry, littleflo. I could have sworn I saw a bit about it the last time I looked.

Ruth's mother, Heather, is very old and frail and Ruth's been travelling to Prudhoe to see what can be done about getting her into assisted care. The stubborn old biddy ain't having it so Ruth expects David to sell up and move to Northumberland just so she can be near her mum!

One of the daftest storylines ever.

littleflo Sun 12-Oct-14 19:13:35

Thank you merlotgran and grannytwice. When I read your post at first merlotgran I thought you were going to fill yourself up with the red stuff, get a shotgun from the cowshed and do the dirty on Heather yourself!

suzied Sun 12-Oct-14 19:19:49

I agree it's totally unbelievable. Ruth expects David, kids and his mum to move up north to be with her mum for what may be a very limited time. Mad. If she's that frail she could come down to Brookfield whether she likes it or not,

papaoscar Sun 12-Oct-14 20:36:05

Archers' summaries can be found on www.lowfield.co.uk/archers/. I have it on good authority that when the time comes Heather is to be immortalised by the erection at public expense of a statue of her adjacent to the Angel of the North on the A1, and that a local motorway service centre will be named after her, subject to whichever plan for the Ambridge bypass is decided upon.
