I've been watching 'all creatures great and small' at around 5 every evening. I'm really enjoying it. It makes me relax and wind down, especially if work has been stressful. There's somthing comforting about watching these old
re-runs. Do any of you find these oldies do the same for you?

Yes, DH and I have been enjoying episodes of 'Only Fools and Horses' recently - fresh and funny as ever and comfortingly familiar.

I've been watching (re-watching???) episodes of Last of the Summer Wine including the very first series...priceless!

Don't know if this counts but The World at War is being reshown on Yesterday in the afternoons. Brilliant!

Dad's Army is sometimes the only thing worth watching on Saturday nights.

However many did they make? I thought we'd seen them all but there are still some that I'm sure we haven't seen before.

I've looked at some of the old comedies I used to enjoy, like "Man About The House" and they seem so dated now - and not at all funny.

One that I quite enjoy (although it's not that old) is The Indian Doctor.

I like Dad's Army too.

DD age 30 watches all the old programmes, is word perfect for some episodes of Dads Army and Oh Dr Beeching !!!!
She also watches The Golden Girls when doing her ironing, or polishing silver,,,, not sure where that came from, the Ironing and the polishing !!!!!

ninathenana Tue 02-Feb-16 23:52:20

I used to love 'Golden Girls'
I bet it's on Sky though ??

Wonderful Likely Lads have been on recently. And Porridge and Rising Damp. Fantastic. Christmas was so lovely because of the old stuff.

I also settled down to the sad and heartwarming story from Deric Longden "Lost for Words" with Thora Hird and Peter Postlethwaite about Deric's mum. I met Deric and his wife. Sat there bawling my eyes out at it, but really enjoyed it, yet again. Then I watched my copies of early Birds of a Feather, series 1. Very funny, as they are now.

Is is odd how some series have dated and others still seem OK. I think that Dads Army remains undated because it is set in a particular period of our history. One with its own rules and language which is instantly recognisable to those brought up with the war as a background or actuality.

Yes Dads Army is still funny as is Fawlty Towers, I don't think they made very many of either of those series. Great writing and characters. Some old ones are cringingly bad when you watch them now though.

Nina, we do not have Sky, I think DD watches on You tube.

My son loves 'Some Mother's Do 'ave em'. I am not sure how long DVD's last, but if ever ours wear out, we shall be lost.

Alima Wed 03-Feb-16 08:17:55

We watch quite a lot of the old programmes. DH likes the Avengers and recently started watching The XFiles. I watched the whole of Tenko yet again a couple of years ago. Ever Decreasing Circles is another one. I loved Lost for Words when it was on. Read his (Derek Longden's) books too. Dad's Army is timeless. There are so many old progs that I watch now they outnumber the current ones I find watchable. Cagney and Lacey too.

Can anyone remember Family at War? It was quite a long series in the 70's I think. Loved that, but haven't seen it repeated any where.

Teetime Wed 03-Feb-16 09:05:38

Yes indeed love an old series. I am heavily into The Pallisers at the moment and have watch ACG & S so many times but still enjoy every episode. A few years ago they screened the whole of The Onedin Line - fabulous escapism.

J52 Wed 03-Feb-16 09:08:37

I remember Family At War. I would like to see it again because I didn't see many of the episodes and some of the younger actors went on to be well known stars.

I think bits of it can be seen on UTube.

A Family at War. Just looked, you can get the whole series for £87.47 from Amazon. I remember it being on but do not remember watching it.

J52 Wed 03-Feb-16 10:06:50

Thanks, I'm not sure I'd pay that much for it! It must have been a long series.

Thanks for checking that, Alima smile. I've just had a look on Ebay, and have seen a few second-hand complete sets, too (hopefully in vgc!). Maybe I'll go for them.

Marelli Wed 03-Feb-16 10:17:57

J52, it was a really long series - according to the description on Ebay, it's a '22 disc DVD series'.

ninathenana Wed 03-Feb-16 11:17:25

Am I the only one who never enjoyed Dad's Army or Some Mother's ??
I find them irritatingly daft. I know that's the whole point but that type of humour doesn't "do" it for me.

nigglynellie Wed 03-Feb-16 12:37:24

Absolutely love Dad's Army, Morcombe and Wise, The two Ronnies, Bergerac (gorgeous young John Nettles!) The world at War, The Forsyte Saga (first time round with lovely Nyree Dawn Porter) They're all there if you look hard enough! Dixon of Dock Green?!!!! Well, maybe you won't find him!!!

Does anyone remember When the boat comes home (or in)?
