I've been watching 'all creatures great and small' at around 5 every evening. I'm really enjoying it. It makes me relax and wind down, especially if work has been stressful. There's somthing comforting about watching these old
re-runs. Do any of you find these oldies do the same for you?

It's not long since the last repeat of The Pallisers which was a wonderful series - not least because of Susan Hampshire's magnificent costumes! I wish they would repeat the Barchester Chronicles with Alan Rickman's wonderful portrayal of the oleaginous Mr Slope!

Fanny Craddock! I remember her being really rude about someone on a programme, but then she was, wasn't she? A bit of a prima dona I think.

nigglynellie Wed 03-Feb-16 20:42:18

OH yes, I remember all these. I loved When the boat comes in. Anyone remember Fanny Craddock, and Johnny?!!!!!!!

I remember the cedar tree. I was a army wife in perham down when it was aired. We'd just returned from a wonderful posting , my husband was away for months on end and I felt very isolated. I really looked forward to sitting watching it. I also liked family at war a few years earlier.

Renember 'Family at War' so well, loved it, Barbara Flynn played the daughter, I have never seen it since it first aired and would love to . Perhaps we should form a consortium to buy the boxed set and pass it around...couldn't afford what they are asking. Does anyone remember The Cedar Tree? a great series. I have most tapes of Upstairs Downstairs and Duchess if Duke Street Need to sonehow get them changed to DVD.

The Pallisers is on BBC2 at l.00. I love it, so gentle and slow moving. I only wish I could find it on replay as it's on at a difficult time.

Also love the Likely Lads and I wish they'd bring back The Forsyth Saga. Someone told me the BBC won't do it because it's in black and white, but that's a lot of its charm.

And Gerry Booth`s selfish wife Myra in long ago episodes of Coronation Street.
I`m another who loved A Family at War. For humour, I`d love to see Love Thy Neighbour again, PC or not PC. Also absolutely loved The Likely Lads, but apparently James Bolam and Rodney Bewes don`t have anything to do with each other anymore.

Ana Wed 03-Feb-16 17:25:50

She also played Brian's long-suffering wife in New Tricks.

J52 Wed 03-Feb-16 17:02:33

Susan Jameson is James Bolam's wife. She was in Take Three Girls in the early70s.
A series about 3 'young things' sharing a flat and living in London. Very much of its time.

It was such a lovely programme wasn't it? They were hard times but the acting was so good, really enjoyable viewing. Could do with a few more like that, I think.

pensionpat Wed 03-Feb-16 16:14:42

We have all four series of When the Boat Comes In and still enjoy watching.

Jalima Wed 03-Feb-16 15:59:30

I had my photo taken with a young John Nettles and his car when we were in Jersey.

The car was real but unfortunately John was a cardboard cutout sad

Jalima Wed 03-Feb-16 15:58:18

Yes, I do PRINTMISS
Thou shalt have a fishy on a little dishy

James Bolam and his wife Susan not Bolam ?

PRINTMISS Wed 03-Feb-16 15:44:32

Does anyone remember When the boat comes home (or in)?

nigglynellie Wed 03-Feb-16 12:37:24

Absolutely love Dad's Army, Morcombe and Wise, The two Ronnies, Bergerac (gorgeous young John Nettles!) The world at War, The Forsyte Saga (first time round with lovely Nyree Dawn Porter) They're all there if you look hard enough! Dixon of Dock Green?!!!! Well, maybe you won't find him!!!

ninathenana Wed 03-Feb-16 11:17:25

Am I the only one who never enjoyed Dad's Army or Some Mother's ??
I find them irritatingly daft. I know that's the whole point but that type of humour doesn't "do" it for me.

Marelli Wed 03-Feb-16 10:17:57

J52, it was a really long series - according to the description on Ebay, it's a '22 disc DVD series'.

Marelli Wed 03-Feb-16 10:16:13

Thanks for checking that, Alima smile. I've just had a look on Ebay, and have seen a few second-hand complete sets, too (hopefully in vgc!). Maybe I'll go for them.

J52 Wed 03-Feb-16 10:06:50

Thanks, I'm not sure I'd pay that much for it! It must have been a long series.

A Family at War. Just looked, you can get the whole series for £87.47 from Amazon. I remember it being on but do not remember watching it.

J52 Wed 03-Feb-16 09:08:37

I remember Family At War. I would like to see it again because I didn't see many of the episodes and some of the younger actors went on to be well known stars.

I think bits of it can be seen on UTube.

Yes indeed love an old series. I am heavily into The Pallisers at the moment and have watch ACG & S so many times but still enjoy every episode. A few years ago they screened the whole of The Onedin Line - fabulous escapism.

Marelli Wed 03-Feb-16 08:46:42

Can anyone remember Family at War? It was quite a long series in the 70's I think. Loved that, but haven't seen it repeated any where.

Alima Wed 03-Feb-16 08:17:55

We watch quite a lot of the old programmes. DH likes the Avengers and recently started watching The XFiles. I watched the whole of Tenko yet again a couple of years ago. Ever Decreasing Circles is another one. I loved Lost for Words when it was on. Read his (Derek Longden's) books too. Dad's Army is timeless. There are so many old progs that I watch now they outnumber the current ones I find watchable. Cagney and Lacey too.
