Hair!

I have long hair and always cut my own fringe - but maybe I will now feel bold enough to hack the back at some stage. I only have the ends cut about once a year.

I have always cut my own hair after a disastrous visit to a hairdresser when I was 15. Practice makes perfect and only this morning I cut an inch off it.

It must about 2 years since I've been to the hairdressers', Mishap. I'd always cut my own fringe, too - although this was met with much disapproval by the local wee hairdresser that I've gone to for years! I was always quite happy with it though. My hair had reached the middle of my back and although it seemed to look ok when it was down, I was having problems putting it up without looking like Popeye's girlfriend Olive Oyl, as there was so much of it (a bun usually ended up either at my nape or on the very top of my head, and I'm tall enough without adding another 4" or so)!

I have a short layered style so wouldn't attempt to cut that but I did cut DD long hair myself until she was in her early teens.

I used to trim my own hair when it was long but its been short for ages and my granddaughter cuts it for me.. I always cut my OH's hair with clippers and scissors I've saved him £££££'s over the years. I've never once had my hair cut as I asked for it at the hairdressers so I don't go if I can avoid it.

I've seen a TV hairstylist cut long hair by putting it into a ponytail at the front and trimming it and it worked quite well.
Good for you Marelli, I wish I could do mine! Apart from anything else it would save a fortune!

It'll probably look ok if it's windy, baubles - and as long as I don't try and tidy it too much.....!

I cut my own hair, and layer it. It takes a while, and makes my arms ache, but has saved me a fortune and I don't have to go out at inconvenient times to do it. I think I get away with it because it's thick and curly.

I wouldn't dare cut my own hair, would be worried about making a pigs ear of it.
Use the local hairdressing college, the students are supervised and I haven't had a bad cut yet fingers crossed and it cost less.

I've done the Mumsnet haircut in the past. It wasn't bad at all.

Has anyone on here tried wearing a hairpiece to disguise thinning hair in the front? My hair has thinned quite a lot due to health reasons, and last week I noticed to my horror that I am receding in the front like male pattern baldness. How I missed this when it was happening I don't know, but there you are! I have such a skimpy fringe now that it looks awful and I dread a windy day when it blows backwards. Unfortunately I have a high forehead anyway (which is even higher now!) and really don't like myself without a fringe, which I have had all my life. Has anyone got any recommendations? Thanks in advance.

Hello Sparklefizz( nice name) A problem for you, and I know somebody that has the same problem and she always wears a wig, a really lovely one, and nobody would know.Not sure if a hairpiece would help though.Hopefully somebody will have some advice, sorry I can't really help.

Sparklefizz hello and welcome if you are new to GN,I know you can buy a clip on fringe hair piece available on line,you can also get plaited hair hair bands which may be of help they come in all colours,a good cut will also help and detract from your hair loss so best of luck.

Sorry, I should have introduced myself I've been lurking on here occasionally, and because I'd been lurking, I forgot I was new to posting and should have said Hello first! (Need to post under memory loss too!!)

Thank you for your comments roses and glamma. I've seen the clip-on fringes online but wonder if they are really obvious. What happens if it's a windy day? Does it blow backwards and people can "see the join"?

Maybe you could wear a hairband over the fringe piece, they do make them in plaited hair, which could look good without being too obvious?

I once saw a lovely wig shop up Steep Hill, in Lincoln. I went in and was amazed by the lovely wigs they had - then slowly realised that it was for cancer sufferers, primarily. I felt quite embarrassed, I hadn't noticed the poor bald woman sitting trying on lots of different pieces. They had all sorts of options though, and really not too expensive.

I do admit to trimming my fringe, but have recently started going to a cheap, sit and wait, hairdresser and have not had a bad cut yet!
I remember that we have similar haircuts Marelli, except that I am growing the bleach out and so we are now not a similar colour grin

I've seen a few fashion articles lately making fun of the hairbands that were around in the 80s, but I loved them and really miss them.

Haven't worn a hair band since I was about ten, and I didn't like them even then.

They 'dig in' or grip like a python.

I think the type of hair you have determines whether cutting it yourself is going to be a great success. I certainly wouldn't risk it.

I've been cutting my own hair for about twenty years, or more, now.
It started during a period of extreme poverty, can't remember exactly what happened, and also because the basins at the hairdressers hurt my neck whether leaning forward or back.
I soon realised that I much preferred this home hairdressing lark to any hairdressing salon.
And it saves money! Yeah! What's not to like? (the way I look, probably ).

I must admit that these days one of my grandaughters is a hairdresser and often tells me off for cutting my own hair and does sometimes insist on just trimming the back for me.
