I don’t know the story, but at face value I’d say it’s easy to work out what the reaction of the police and the judiciary is likely to be.

The Ministry of Justice confirmed that five prisoners have not yet been returned to jail

This was as of last night.
Maybe they are already back by now?

Not a wise move to privatise prisons and the probation service. Wonder when that happened?

It seems to have been the way crimes were logged vegansrock - though the changes in probation "pay by results" scheme for example was ludicrous.

Unfortunately I don't think we can blame that in this case!
It's apparently a change in the way crimes are recorded and is probably due to some poor drafting of recent legislation.

Personally I think our Justice system is a complete mess.

Years of underfunding and shortages of staff, privatisation, lack of consistency in sentencing. Like many other things it’s broken!

This error is unacceptable and doesn’t reflect well (again) on the LP.

They really need to get their s**t together and quickly!

You have to wonder how the police and Justice system feel about it.

You do get the feeling the whole country is dissolving before our very eyes.

Obviously everything is the fault of KS, absolutely everything, forever.

I think a bigger meltdown will be caused by Lammy as foreign secretary …. It’s not the start I expected to be fair.

eggplant thought it important to widen the search for the most incompetent Labour government minister for this week anyway.

I do agree that Lammy as foreign secretary would not have been my choice but I did hear a pretty good speech of his recently.

At one level yes it was a polished speech but as a friend reminded me recently, you have to keep the end goal in mind. So does this speech bring a closer connection to Russia or not? I couldn’t help look at the fantasy video Russia released with its preferred option of annihilating London as far as Edgware I recall.
Seems to me that from Boris Johnson on, Ukraine has been encouraged to continue and develop the war by the UK. I don’t see this ending well.

Heard on radio that one of those released in error committed a sexual assault very shortly after release.

Obviously Gray and Starmer were there on the day at all those prisons doing the paperwork.
Lammy gave a v good speech at the UN as did Starmer though I don’t expect anyone to comment on that.

"The government had said those convicted of offences linked to domestic abuse - including breaching a restraining order - would not be eligible for early release.

However, 37 men's crimes had incorrectly been prosecuted under outdated legislation from 1997.

That meant the system did not recognise they were ineligible for release. It only looked at offences under the Sentencing Act 2020."

it's now been put right but not early enough for the victim!

Nevertheless, if prisons are full, action did have to be taken: not enough care clearly, prisoners with certain offences should either not have been released or should have been subject to greater scrutiny.
